Pittsburgh Exterior Paint - expert opinions needed

Hi,

We're building a workshop/garage and need to seal/cover the wood siding with something as soon as possible. We'd already chosen a BM color for the siding when I went to the paint store but the guy there was skeptical about using a BM primer or a BM exterior paint this time of year because the daytime high temperatures here are down in the 40s and 50s now. He recommended Pittsburgh Paints latex primer, which can be applied at a lower temperature. He also recommended using PP's exterior paint for the same reason and said it's as good as BM or any other high-quality paint.

I'd really like any expert opinions I can get because, whatever paint we choose, we're planning on repainting our house with it as well.

I have used BM MooreGuard exterior latex paint in temps in the low 50's with no problems. Just be sure the surface is dry and stop painting early enough for the paint to dry before the temp starts dropping in the evening. I would use Bullseye 123 latex primer.

Hi guys,
Yeah, you've gotta watch the temps! Also, just because the "AIR"-temp might be 50deg., doesn't mean the surface is.
For proper film-leveling and even binder-coagulation, it takes twice as long at 50 degrees vs. 75 deg.
Therefore, you may only get ONE coat per day done. As you stated, just be sure of each brands temp. range.

Paintguy, Thanks for the input, I'm not home at the moment but am going to check to make sure that Oil was used on my place and then will check with a few neighbors to see exactly what was used on their house. Hoping that they used Acrylic so that there's an explanation. If I use Jomax/Bleach to clean everything up, can Acrylic be applied right over the Oil based stuff? Would it hurt to add a mold inhibitor to the Acrylic for the belt/suspenders approach? What exterior opaque acrylic and mold inhibitor brand would you recommend? Lastly, (this is more or less common sense 101) but... when I cover the place in jomax/bleach and then powerwash it, I really need to be on a ladder angling the sprayer down so that I don't drive water under the boards-no? I'd love to be lazy and try to powerwash from the ground but could be asking for trouble. Thanks for your help.

I think it's stunning. I've used O. Branch on exterior before as well. Great ext. color. You do have a lot of it. The red windows on the garage are very well done and wonder if that same idea on the house might not be a good thing to consider. That would help break up, balance, counter the mass of green. Lastly, I never spec flat for an exterior. Usually satin, at the very least eggshell. One it looks better, IMHO and two it's easier to live with as in it repels dirt and washes up better. Overall you did a very nice job, you should be pleased.

We spent lots of time removing wallpaper, for the right house it would not be a big deal to do it again. Of course depends what market you are in and what you are competing with. Here there is no new construction so unless you pay above market for decorating you will have to do work Maybe I am out of date but I see nothing wrong with the fixture. Where I live brass is still considered fine (the land of Ethan Allen and Colonials in the Northeast) While the wallpaper is not my taste, if you like it leave it. If you paint now, if you have small children you may have to paint again by the time you are ready to sell. Your paint color may be out of date too
