Question about Jars dinnerware

Hi there,

We have been looking for new dinnerware for a long time, and it has been a challenge since I want to get something lead-free (easier said than done!) My husband and I both fell in love with these dishes at Williams Sonoma, although they would be a splurge for sure. They are made by Jars in France, and I have heard good things about the company. My concern is that they have a beautiful crackle finish (although it is beneath the glaze) on one side, but the other side is matte, white stoneware. I am wondering if: 1) the stoneware will scratch the glaze when the dishes are stacked and 2) if the outside of the dishes will get scratched, dinged and/chipped since there is no shiny glaze. Has anyone had experience with these dishes or with something similar? I would love some input! Below is the link to the dishes:

I checked the WS site for reviews, and while there are only three, and they are very recent, they are all 5 star.

I also looked up their return policy, and for defective items it reads "Defective products may be returned at any time for a replacement or merchandise credit only.
We cannot accept returns of personalized or monogrammed merchandise, special-order items or products that have been shipped directly from the manufacturer except when due to defect."

Sounds like it would be pretty safe to try them!

We've been using Jars dinnerware for 11+ years, absolutely fabulous. No problems with the glaze, I still love them. I adore Jars! Go for it.

The great majority of home canners in the U.S. and Canada BWB jams and jellies. Most Europeans do not. It's not particularly a safety issue because you're dealing with a high-acid high-sugar product. However, shelf life can be reduced and there is a somewhat greater likelihood of mold. Jars with mold have to be discarded as a correlation between the mold and cancer has been found. It's your call. Not a big deal either way, though BWB is recommended by the USDA, Extension services, all standard sources (except for the pectin inserts, for some unknown reason). If you're referring to lemon juice in tomatoes, that is bottled lemon juice (i.e. ReaLemon) because the acidity is standardized. The alternative is powdered citric acid (which most feel has less effect on the flavor). It's commonly available in grocery stores/pharmacies or can be ordered online. Vinegar can also be used at 2x the amount of bottled lemon juice, but it does affect the flavor. I wouldn't use it for plain canned tomtoes. Rhubarb is much less acid than lemons and somewhat less acid than vinegar, so I don't see that as do-able. I hope this helps. Let us know if you have other questions. Carol

The holes are to allow for adequate movement of the air and water throughout the pot/container. Water has to be able to freely surround each jar in a BWB and the old "what goes up must be able to drain back down" sort of thing applies. ;) I suppose that if the sides of the pan didn't touch the sides of the pot and there was room for the water to move freely then it would be no problem but something with holes would work better. And old metal pie or cake pan that is smaller in diameter than the pot with lots of holes punched (hammer and a screwdriver or ice pick) in it (aluminum pie pans won't support the weight) and set upside down on the bottom level of jars and top level of jars set on it works well. As mentioned cake drying racks work well too. There are all sorts of cheap metal things sold in the housewares dept. that can be made to work. Yard sales are also a good source. And if all else fails you can always make a spacing rack using extra rings/bands wired or screwed together in a circle. Just have to think a bit outside the box (or the pot in this case. :) Dave

Question about mixing dinnerware colors

This year I finally got tired of the chips in white dinner plates and the white bowls that were shaped oddly for pouring milk into and began investing in Fiestaware. Obviously, the colors are brighter than what you are looking at but I knew that I did not a different color in each place setting (too visually stimulating for me). My table seats 8 so I wanted 8 place settings in cobalt. If the table is full, I can have everyone with the same color for continuity. We are a family of 6 in the house so I am also acquiring 6 place settings of lemongrass and 6 of scarlet. This allows me to have our family all have the for dinner in an every day setting or helps with coordinating when I want the contrast. When shopping for other pieces like ramekins, individual casserols, buillon bowls, etc., those will all be in the same color for the set (for instance just 6 scarlet ramekins). What it comes down to for me is I love the dishes, they make me smile. I used to love white dishes but I can really appreciate how these colors set off foods. I also love the way the colors coordinate, most of the time. I am a moody person though and sometimes I do not want too many colors at once so this gives me the flexibility I need. Great info! Sochi, does your dinnerware have matte stoneware on one side or are the dishes glazed all around? My3Dogs, you were so kind to look on the WS website for me! I saw those reviews as well, although it's hard to tell when a product is so new. Mitchdesj, we would be buying the blue dishes. I would love to also see some in green (our kitchen is turquoise and green), but the blue is wonderful too. :-)

Mine are mostly glazed, but they have some unglazed areas on the underside, see below. It doesn't seem to scratch.

Jars may be new to W-S, but they are well over 150 years old and have a great reputation. There are many more styles too, for sale at several spots. You may want to check out the Jars website.

You can buy some of those felt plate protectors which lays between the plates in the cabinets. They come in all different sizes so you can use them for dessert plates and bowls too.

I got mine and Bed, Bath & Beyond.

I was at Crate and Barrel yesterday and they have a Jars line too. It's different from the WS line but nice and $10/plate less.

I purchased the bright blue Jars dishes from Williams Sonoma. I love everything about them but the dishes do not lay flat. They spin on the table as if they are warped. And I think they have gotten worse. Maybe from the dishwasher? Anyone else have this problem?

Just as an fyi, glaze has nothing to do with chip resistance. That's a function of the type of clay used to make the dishes. The harder the clay, the hotter the dishes can be fired and the more durable they will be. Jars dishware are made of stoneware -- one of the most durable pottery bodies.

With heavy, long use any set of dishes will start to show wear. It's also good to be careful about putting something like stoneware in the microwave as that can cause issues.

Dishware won't change shape unless it breaks. Dishwasher can only affect the glaze if dishes are made from very soft clay and the dishwasher is an old one with heated drying. That can cause the glaze on a piece of old or soft pottery to craze -- essentially look like crackle tile.

Sonoma & Crate stand behind their stuff. One benefit of buying there.

Sorry but your response doesn't address my complaint. I'm not questioning the glaze. The glaze looks as good as it did when I bought them. My problem with the plates is that they don't sit flat when stacked or on a table. They rotate or spin.
