How much walking on a leash are these dogs getting? How much training do they have, seems like they need a bit more in each department, this is important,I can not stress how important in controlling your dogs. The dogs are attracted to poo because there is still food in there, and they can smell it. As soon as you see the dogs near the area, there should be a command to leave it. if the dogs dont back away, get a soda can put some beans in it and tape it up with duct tape, you can shake this at the dogs as a deterrent. You can use the last resort which is to IMMEDIATELY tell the dogs to drop it, then put a dab of toothpaste or tobasco sauce on their tongues. Start with toothpaste, some dogs like it, in that case switch to the tobasco sauce bottle. You can buy miniatures bottles of the sauce and buy a travel sized toothpaste for the dogs, dont use yours. The dogs will soon associate the kitty litter area with a negative response and not go in. It does sound like they need a bit more in the departments I stated before. Leash walking helps dogs learn who is boss, helps them focus and burns off frustration and anxiety at doing the same thing every day.

mazer my dogs get at least once a day leash walked, usually twice a day. They have not got puppy training yet because they just turned 10 weeks old and they don't start puppy classes till they are 12 weeks. That's a good idea about the soda can and then if that doesn't work then the toothpaste and tobasco. Yuck, I hate tobasco so I'm sure he will. Is that the only reason that they like kitty poop (because there is still food in it)??

Your puppy is doing something that is not at all uncommon for dogs and most likely has nothing to do with any food in the cat feces. You can do a search for "dogs eating feces", or corprophagia (the technical term for eating feces) in dogs. Well, we have a covered cat box, so for us just banging on the top of the cat box when Coda would stick her head in, scared her enough to eventually deter her. Then eventually she learned leave it and drop it, so commands worked the few times she decided to brave the cat box. Also shaking a plastic bag works well. Although I think mazers soda can idea might work better because you can do it without the dogs seeing its YOU making the noise. It'll deter them from the box all together, not just when you're around.

Banging on the box worked only because with her head in there, she couldnt see us. The plastic bag scared her but as soon as the noise was done, she'd try to run back to the box, so it wasn't THAT effective, it just got her away from the box.

My dogs go out to the barn when I clean the horse stall and pick their perfect horse puck.

They make a dog-gate with a cat-door built into it. I don't know how big your pup is, but once she starts to get boxer sized it would work.

Well isn't that thing handy. I wish I would have seen that before I bought my pet gate for the same price. My cats seem to be a little irked with always having to jump up onto the banister railing and over to get into the living room.

Its seems steep to me but like I said, I don't know anything about these gates...what is good price, and what's too high to pay?? Of course, I know its just your opinion but like between 60-70? I don't have a whole lot to spend but I need to do something because I don't want my puppy getting sick or anything from this.

cindyb_va Deuce is about 25lbs. He is 10 weeks old so he is a very big boy. lol His sister Daisee is only about 13-15lbs. I'll try to get an updated picture on here of the both of them. We feed our 4 cats in the master bathroom. We put a cat door in our bedroom door. We keep the door closed at all times. Our dog can't get in the bedroom and the cats can come in and out as they please. This has worked out beautifully. Before we did this Benny(dog) was constantly sneaking in and helping himself to food and poop.

Munkos, your money is not wasted on the simple gate. Just install it so that it's 8" or so above the floor. Your cats can move around the house by going under the gates, and if your dogs are larger than the cats they'll still be blocked.

Shabosbaby, it sounds like your dogs are small, maybe cat sized, so you do have a problem. If they were larger you could simply turn the (hooded or covered model) cat box to face the wall, leaving the opening just 6"-9" away the wall. The cats can get in, but the dogs are foiled. Dogs eating kitty candy is more of a natural behavior that's upsetting to people. The litter attached to the feces can be dangerous for them though, so you do need to figure out a way to keep them out of there.

Cynthia, I would if I could, but my beagle could probably get under it. She can squeeze herself past just about anything if she wants, and she really isn't that much taller than my other girls. Shes small for a beagle. Little runt. Not to mention, she's the type we'd come home to to find her head stuck if she couldn't fit. It may be a good thing if my kitty gets to fat to jump or go through the railing. I'll move the cat food to the living room and she'll be hooped til she looses the pooch. haha.

But aside from that, we have it placed between a wall, and a railing. it can't go much higher than it is, without it going above the railing and be useless. Its not the sturdiest set up, but considering my girl is terrified of the noise it makes when she jumps on it, she doesn't do it, so she won't knock it over. She 'gophers' by the gate, on her back legs with her front legs up, but she rarely touches the gate, and she flips when she does. She'd never get close enough, long enough to actually knock it over.
