Durango/Silverton Narrow GaugeTrain- been on it?

We're going out to CO in late Sept and one of the things on our possible to-do lists is to drive down to Durango for this train ride- it looks spectacular and the aspens should be in full color about then, too. (I'm assuming they have aspens down there, they do up by Steamboat, where we go.)

Has anyone been on this trip? Looks like 3.5 hours each way with about 2 hours in Silverton. Is the town cool? We'll probably drive down and spend two nights, looks like about a 6.5 hour drive, each way, from Steamboat Springs. Will it be worth the trip? Thanks for any input!

Here is a link that might be useful: Train ride....
