Your opinion on metal backsplash?

I originally wanted a light brick backsplash to help create a warm, rustic feeling in the kitchen. But now I'm not sure.

The white cabinets (without drawers or doors yet) and the walnut counters were installed today, and I ended up painting the entire room BM Silver Marlin after seeing it in a photo here and falling in love.

After all that...I don't think rustic, light colored brick is going to fit. The room is becoming too "modern" for that, and it may clash. I've been trying to stay away from modern, but it seems I've failed. I really think the kitchen is begging for a metal backsplash. It will compliment the colors and stainless appliances very nicely.

I'm concerned though, that this may be a fad and go out of style in the next couple years.

What's your opinion on metal backsplashes? Here to stay? Or gone tomorrow?

I think if it fits your kitchen and your vision, go for it! I've seen both contemporary metal sheet backsplashes (maybe someone here remembers the link) then more traditional pressed tin. You can also get metal tile. I like them all!

It won't be hard to pull down the metal and put up a different backsplash. So why not? Personally I think they can look great.

Hi everyone - I've been a gardenweb stalker since we began building our house, but this is my first time writing in with a question! I'm having second thoughts about what we did for our raised breakfast bar backsplash, and wanted your opinions. We did a picture frame detail above the stove with q-seal white marble 1x1s, with the rest of the backsplash on that wall being the coordinating subway tile. We also have an island where the sink/dishwasher are, with a raised breakfast bar, and decided to tile that backsplash with the 1x1 accent tile from above the stove to tie it all in together. Did we make a rookie mistake? I'm hoping it doesn't look like a mish-mash...what are your thoughts? Thanks! Image link:

I think they are beautiful. I considered it in my old house, but ended up using leftover tile instead since it was "free." Cost varies greatly. I've seen real tin panels and their price ranges from $15-30/panel depending on the finish; copper patina was most expensive. The fake ones, which look pretty darn good IMHO, are usually less about $8-15/panel if you shop around. Another option is embossed wallpaper that you can paint, which is very inexpensive.

When I read your question and saw your counter, I was prepared to say stay with just the trav tiles. Then I saw your proposed bs and liked it, so... thought maybe the best move would be to use the tile inserts but only 1 instead of the 4 for each spot. Then, looked at it some more and realized it was the trav that was not working for me. I think it is too busy (and too rough a stone look) with your pretty polished counters nearby. How about a plainer field tile and use the glass inserts (1 or 4)? If you used a light color drawn from your granite for the tile, then it would all flow smoother for me.

Once mocking it up, I see your Fog more with the counter than your Platinum. I still like the green/blue Kiwi for the bs best followed by the Khaki. The Fog seems a little too perky/powdery IMHO. The Kiwi seems more conventional and the Khaki is more edgy. I think the Kiwi will highlight the yellow olive tones more. The Khaki will make you notice the blue-teal shades. I tend to go with cool tones, so for me to have picked the floor choice in a more tan/orange is a departure for me. My kitchen is white/gray/black/lavender/chrome, so you can see where my color scheme heads... I like the "Madrid Brown" from your website of the Platinum because it plays up the orange of the cabs and the small parts of it in your stone. I did not want the same color as your cabs though because that could be dark and monotone when paired too closely. I'd definitely get your stone installed before picking the bs and then pick your paint color last.

From a practical perspective, I would just ask what kind of cooking you do. If you do deep frying, I think a metal backsplash will get ruined quickly.

In addition to johnliu's point, it can be an inexpensive way to comply with code while you decide. Check your local metal fabricators if you are interested in a sheet cut to fit your space (with or without hemmed edges.) You might consider magnetic for a slight price bump if you think that would add to function for spice storage. Also you could break up the metal with an inset centered above the cooktop or range.

A friend of mine bought a house with a metal backsplash. It is actually reflective. I am not sure I could deal with "myself" behind the stove all the time! Hahaha! She is a neat housekeeper so it always looks clean anyway.
