Comments (12)I'm with linelle - neither of these feels right. Especially not the pebbley one. I have a similar granite and went with an interesting shape in a mostly solid color cream. I say mostly b/c the color variations did not show up nearly as much in my numerous samples as when it got up on the wall. I think mine is almost verging on too much pattern. While the minibrick looks pretty uniform, it actually has quite a few different shades and various textures/depths. I think all one tile like linelle suggested is going to be your better bet. Here's mine as a reference (like I said, they did not look this varied when I held them up sheet by sheet on the wall, but the whole thing is more than I would have wanted. So your minibrick option will do the same - look way more varied/compete with the counter once it is all up)....See MoreInterested in pics/opinions of kitchens with white appliances!
Comments (55)Ok now don't misread what I have posted ladies. I don't think white appliances look cheap in all instances. In many they're the only right choice! While I have stainless, I also have black appliances and am probably going to put a white stove (maybe black) in the new kitchen. White does not need to be top of the line designer to work well in a kitchen...it's the sum of the whole (as I like to say). White cabinets with black appliances also looks bad (IMO) as they look like either a cheap afterthought (maybe kept the old stuff) or a bad design choice unless the color is incorporated in other areas of the ktichen well (ie a black and white check floor etc). But black cabinets stand out in a world of their own. When done in an antiqued finish, they're rustic and yet elegant beyond any other cabinet color or style...yummy. And when done on a new cabinet with a tight wood grain, they're sleek and lucious. They're a wonderful design choice that too few pick because they fall too quickly in the "don't want a dark kitchen etc" camp that too many land in and end up with boring kitchens instead. But much like a colored cabinet, red, blue, yellow, if you do go black you need to do it right. The contrast of a black and white for cab and countertop is a great contrast. I'm always taken aback by corian because I owned it, know it was stupid expensive, and resented the cracks, scratches, stains, etc that were on my new corian counters....horrific stuff that costs too much. I don't get people who spend the same amount or close on corian that they would for something like stone or metal or wood (and before you think I'm all stone all the time, I have metal counters and adore them...I'd kill for copper...fabulous stuff, and love my stainless counters). I also have a wonderful formica, but my installer did wonderful edges so that wasn't a worry. I can understand the issue of edge worries if they don't do a good job. And if the only choice was formica with bad edges and seams verses corian...well of course I'd go corian. But as to the appliances...SS is fine, it's timeless, and it works, but in your sleek new kitchen I'd actually consider black far sooner than I'd consider stainless but they are the better choice to white so you don't have stark holes of color in the kitchen (think black hole gone opposite LOL) The stainless will work well if that's what DH wants (cave it's always worth it) :) And don't take any "white is cheap" comment to heart....it's not, it just has it's place as does any other material used in the decorating and design world. In your case, it could damage the look of your fabulous cabinets...that's all I'm saying. I'm sorry I wasn't tactful enough. It's been a long week and sometimes I'm too short. I was taken aback because of the high (normally) cost of corian and generally just don't get the choice. This is because I've had two corian counters in the past and they didn't preform. In addition, most people who put it in at full price expect top dollar when they're selling their home because they put in corian, but it's such a ummm gad how to say...specialty finish, that it's very hard to place someone in a corporate condo when it's in, so we always rip it out asap and put in anything else. No not just stone :oP Actually in your kitchen, if you want white appliances really badly, I'd go with builder grade black and white granite which is amazingly cheap (less than formica) and has a fabulous color sequence in it that would pull your black cabinets into the design with white cabinets and make the whole thing flow wonderfully. or go with a wonderful black and white glass tile backsplash in a checkerboard pattern to pull them together...it would be yummy, yummy yummy! Again I'm sorry...on a personal note, I've been blessed with the special needs challenge myself and don't want you to have to resort to calming medication though many times they'r so tempting heh heh :) But do enjoy something stronger than green tea while you're working on this kitchen....you'll need it! Comments (8)I guess ceramic subways are out of the question? Maybe with a line of glass mosaics in yellow a row or two from the bottom? I think that would give a nod to the nostalgia/age of the home but bring in some pop and the color that you've incorporated into your kitchen with the wall color. The ceramic subways are generally cheaper than slate (I think?), and with only a little bit of the pricy tile interspersed, it wouldn't be all that expensive. I think Bill V. usually says that Dal-Tile is perfectly acceptable tile to use--and I take what he says like the gospel!! I'm (personally) not a big fan of the tin ceiling tile backsplash look. Can't really tell you why--no real rationale. I know some people really like it. For a real budget makeover for the backsplash in an old country home, I prefer painted beadboard. (oh, and do you have pictures of the rest of your kitchen and/or house? I have an 1870's Victorian farmhouse and rarely get to sneak a peek at other homes of the same age!!) Comments (118)Timeless is such a hard word for me. I think that white cabinets, marble, real butcher block, natural stone, some openness and natural light are timeless to me. Granted the MOST timeless thing to me is functionality. When I started looking for my first house my dad said something that stuck with me, "Look past ugly, you can change ugly --you can't change location, size and layout (easily)- - it is a lot easier take down some wallpaper, lighting fixtures and sea foam green carpet then it is to add an extension or re-arranging walls and be in a different neighborhood." Now when I first started my kitchen reno FUCTION was the most important thing to me, I opened a wall, closed another, moved all my appliances around, added appliances, added an eating bar into my living room and huge amounts of counter space. That to me is timeless, my finishes however are not. If I were to sell my house 6 months from now, I am POSITIVE people would balk at my two tone cabinets, one white with a glaze, my big farm sink, my ORB handles and fixtures and busy granite, the fact I choice new white appliances over stainless steel,, my beveled arabesque, my choice to use multiple big mouldings and other things that I can't think of right now. But to be honest I don't care. I started this project looking for validation from friends/family on what to do and was so unhappy with the results. My mom had a 1940's farm house that she recently re-did the sprawling kitchen with ivory shaker cabinets and black movement filed granite and super top end stainless appliances, restoration hardware lights, simple and beautiful, Many times, by many people called timeless and classic--but I would never want it in my house. I finally decided to treat my kitchen like a reflection of myself, I am 28, I am a housewife with no kids who loves to entertain and does so at least weekly. I am Italian as is my husband with HUGE families that are very close. I love makeup and wear a lot of it, I do not usually leave the house ( or my dressing room for that matter) with out the longest fake eyelashes I can find. I have hip length long blonde hair. It is not uncommon to find me in the kitchen with a pair of 6 inch stilettos on and if I think I put on enough jewelry for the day-- I will go put on just one more piece ;-) So why can't my kitchen reflect me?... It may be over the top, it may be easily dated, it may even be deemed tacky, busy or gaudy... but I can tell you I look just right standing in the middle of it, cause honestly I am a little bit of all of those things. BUT my layout is perfect and functional, it is opened enough to entertain, but closed enough to give me peace when I want it. My cabinets are solid, my moldings are classic (albeit there are a lot of them) my appliances are quality as are finishes-- to me THAT is timeless....
