Your room is totally gorgeous already, so if you don't really want to, you don't 'need' to. But I do love black and it would just amp up that room a bit!

No, I would not. If they were black they would complete with the table base. The chairs are very nice looking and have some nice details. They look to be in good condition so they don't need to be "saved" by painting them.

The table is very casual and lightweight and the rest of the room is much more formal and classic. Can you switch the table out with another from somewhere in the house? Those beautiful chairs with another table might really 'make' the room.

Also consider reupholstering the chairs in a rich subtle print to really pull it together. The room looks very nice as it is now and a couple of changes like that can have big impact.

I have this table with the chairs. The first thing I did was take off the seats and recover. It's very easy to do and doesn't take much fabric or time.

Currently, my chairs are done in a plaid. But I have another fabric I want to redo them with.

I agree with changing out the seats. It would make a huge difference. The room is already pretty but bumping it up a notch is always fun.

My thought was to change out the fabric, too. That white is just not fitting in with the rest of the decor (very nice, BTW).

I love the room and wouldn't paint the chairs. I would recover the seats, though.
But please tell me about the lamp on the demilune table. It's gorgeous!

I may like them black but what I would do would be to go to a store maybe target that had cheap generic black dining chairs, buy two and audition the just the color,not the style. And then take them back.
A different fabric would be great too, whether or not you paint them. I love fabrics. I would wait to change the fabric until I decided to paint the chairs or not.
And yes we need to know about the lamp on the demilune, and the demilune itself! I also want to know about the lampshade on the desk. Is your rug a Karastan? my I am nosy this a.m.

I'm in a bold frame of mind today, so I say paint them black. But I like the idea of "auditioning" a couple of target chairs first; that would be easy to do and save some regrets later if you don't like the look. Gorgeous room, and if you don't paint them, definitely re do the seats. A bold stripe with some black in it would be wonderful, or perhaps that dragonfly print that is so popular.

I would not paint them black, but I agree that I would change out the seating fabric to something with a black background, maybe with gold dragonflies to help tie in all the gold that appears to be in the room.

To try the look just use a black t-shirt and lay it on the chair seat so that all the current fabric is not visible. See how you like the effect.

I think it might also be interesting to see if you could find a round platter or tray that would fit down into the bottom center ring of the table, and add a pretty fern there. Or, if the opening isn't too large, a large golden-toned glass garden ball down there might be very cool!

Kind of OT, but I love your windowpane mirror. That finish is great. Do you mind sharing where you found it?

I say change the seats first; you might be happy with that. Painting is a drastic change that can't be undone.

Go the easy route and change out the fabric to find out if they give you that 'oomph' you're looking for. If not, then resort to painting. ;o)

I wouldn't paint the chairs...way too much prep work involved with those spindles. How would you ever get them all sanded?? Change out the seats instead and add a few other black accents to the room to get the same, or better, oomph.

Cooperbailey- The rug is Karastan. Also, the table and the lamp are a Marshall's find. That's my favorite store. The windowpane mirrow is something my husband found out in the country in a house. We put the mirror in ourselves.

I think the finish on the chairs is very nice and they don't need to be painted. I agree about changing out the seat cushions, it's easy to do.

Agree with dilly dally , don't paint the chairs. What about skirting the table to make it better go with the room? Maybe to match new seats on the chairs?

I love your room. So many interesting things to look at. I agree with the other poster who suggested reupholstering the seats. I think painting the chairs boils down to your personal taste and preference. The room is lovely just as it is.

I think the chairs in their warm wood tones are beautiful the way they are. There are already some black accent pieces in the room, so I think adding more would be too much. Agree with dillydally that it would also compete with the base. You want some contrast between the base and all the legs (and chair covers) to really set off the pretty curves of the base. Instead, I'd do the chair covers in a print with a bit of black or other dark value in it. I picture a geometric or other pattern with a repeat-heavy rhythm.

My first inclination was YES, because I love black painted furniture. But after more thought, I agree - change the seat covers. That shouldn't be too hard and if you don't like the new ones, you can always change them back. (unlike the black paint!)

Take pics after you decide. I'd be curious. :)

Debbimc: I have four chairs but because of the giant hutch I only use two of them to save space.

Artlover: there are two windowpane mirrors on the left. I also have a large one in the living room. We made them all.

The dog and the child side by side in frames on the table...I love it! pesky is very practical....it will be a bit laborious, doing a really good paint job. Not worth it, IMO, since the chairs are pretty as is and can get look you want with fabric switch. Love the big mirror!

I think the chairs are great as they are and your whole room is beautiful. If you paint them black they're just going to show dust worse.

I would reupholster them in a warmer fabric and maybe with a touch of blue that's in the rug in the print. That's an easy job.

Then you can invest in chair covers if you like, to change the looks of the chairs to suit your mood, or the season.

Even though I was suggesting changing the fabric covers, the touches of cream throughout are so nice. Maybe a good fresh summer choice. Had browsed around for fabrics and thought this blue was nice with your rug. Don't think it's the "right" fabric (price and silk) but the color and type of stable pattern (versus movement and heavy pattern in the rug) might be really nice with both your rug and the wood tones.
