I LOVE my motion-triggered light in my pantry /laundry room. It does exactly what you'd want it to do: When someone approaches carrying a load of laundry or an armload of groceries, it turns on automatically. Less evident, but also important: It turns OFF after ten minutes or so. Prior to installing this, this light was left on all too often, and no one'd notice it 'til we sat down to watch TV and realized that it was causing a glare from across the kitchen. The only problem we ever have is that occasionally someone turns off the lightswitch, and then the lights won't turn on. When that happens, I stand there like an idiot waving my arms, trying to get it to "notice me" . . . then I realize what's happening, and I reach over to turn on the lights. I don't think I"d be happy with a door jam style. Our door isn't always closed, so I think I'd run the light needlessly. I don't know which type costs less, but my husband installed ours himself, and I don't think it cost more than $25-30 . . . though I am guessing. He didn't act like it cost much of anything. In our new house, we will have motion-sensored lights in several places: - Garage - Hallways - Closets - Laundry - Pantry - Bathroom night lights, if that's possible -- I don't really want the master bath light to come on automatically because I wouldn't want the light to spill into the bedroom during the night - Maybe some outdoor lights? Uncertain.

Love your cabinets and what a deal. I love the re-store store! In our last house we had a tiny kitchen, but managed to modify a pantry to have pullouts plus a six inch space for broom closet along one side. I know a lot of people would say that's not enough space, but it was plenty for a broom, swiffer and a hand vac. You will love this space. If you order a cabinet, a face frame will narrow the space, though. You will likely also be limited on heights available. You could probably just make this cabinet with 3/4 panels if you want to go to the floor and order your doors separately. We used a 3/4 panel in this way and used angle brackets on the floor and ceiling (at the top ours was also attach to another wall cabinet, though.). The angle brackets on the floor were tiled over since we went down to the subfloor. The ones at top were hidden behind our frig. I think trimming it to the ceiling would look best and maybe find a way to bridge the top of your frig. It will link the two sides visually and give the frig a more built in space. Even if you just put a nice straight line valance with a plain bead at top like your cabs, stained to match, you would get that finished look. We had a cabinet bridging that space. Whatever you use, there may still be that little bit of space to slide a cookie sheet on top of the frig. That's what we did--we used every square inch! Now I'm planning our last dream house kitchen and I'm still wanting to use every last bit of space well. Hate those fillers unless they pull out :) Isn't it fun to find a use for the little spaces that others would just use filler of leave an empty space on the other end?!

My louvered door--oak. I don't think it looks cheap, but I am biased. The glass door on the left matches another door out of photo (left of the chair)--both connect to the dining room and from there to the balance of house so they're open most of the time but get closed when we want to close off a space. The oak door shown on the right goes to basement and matches nearby sliding doors on front hall closet. Guess which is the door to kitchen closet-pantry in which we operate two dehydrators and in which we store spuds and onions? I lost the argument to put a vent window into the stairwell from inside the closet at top of back wall. This would have improved air passage tremendously. I argued for high-quality doors and won the argument. Mr Oak (DH) is very pleased. These were all special order ones and therefore expensive. There's another door in vicinity--steel fire door to garage which is painted gentle brown to match (haven't wood grained it yet) plus an insulated steel door to front step. (We have a lot of doors--the curse of this part of the house, which was originally designed by a drunken committee of men.) This photo will be deleted pretty soon. I hope baseboards will be installed before end of August. Painting on wall is one of many we rotate into this position--this one is the Minn state bird. (We're into scientific illustration.)

I can't grab a picture of mine b/c it is in our storage unit but I am going for the same look. I went to an antique/salvage kind of shop and found with an original glass panel on the top in pretty good shape for $65. It was an old exterior door. This shop had lots of door knobs/plates/locks and we were able to dig through and find a matching set. We are going with a crystal door knob. I have not decided what I am going to do about the paint. It is white and worn but not in that nice shabby chic way, more dirty and dog scratch way. :) I don't want it to look brand new either and I am not confident in my skills to do "distress painting". I have seen some examples of it where it looks pretty cheezy and I am sure mine would look that way. Anyway, I looked on CL too but a lot of the doors on there people were asking over $100 for and they were not that great.
