interior doors and woodwork

Has anyone painted their doors a different color than rest of woodwork? I plan to paint all baseboards and door casings SW Divine White (off-white) and doors SW Kilim Beige (light beige). I love our doors -- they are "Sante Fe" style with vertical "plank" look. Most walls in house will be SW Nomadic Desert (Medium Beige) or SW Svelte Green (Medium Sage green). I can't decide whether to paint ceilings same as walls or Kilim beige. We have very high ceiling in living room and 9' in rest of the house and lots of windows so I'm not too worried about being too dark. In fact I like "cozy" bedrooms and bathrooms.

Our painter sounded shocked when I mentioned different colors (really just a darker shade) for doors. Opinions or experiences, please.

In my painting experiences, I've done that for many customers.

First time I painted our whole house (years ago) I painted trim and door molding cream and doors themselves a very light shade of tan (very light but there was a bit of contrast). Didn't look bad. This time around I went all white because I really wanted more color on the walls. I think what you describe sounds nice. As Michael says, it's what you like ;) If you check over in home dec (try searching 'painted ceilings' or just 'ceilings'), there was a post in the last month or so about painting ceilings. There are some photos of high ceilings like yours done same as wall and a shade lighter, both are very pretty.

It's your project, so you can do what you want to. At least, however, be consistent room, by room. If a number of the spaces are open to one another and there is no visual seperation, mixing stained and painted materials will look inconsistent and odd. The distinction will create an eye-catching contrast, rather than have everything appear integrated together. You are doing a new house where you can think ahead and do what makes most sense for harmony and unity. Older, existing houses are often a piece-meal result over time. Just tell all the sentimental folks that they'll be just as sentimental about the new house as the old--it just won't be identical (for good reasons). Good luck with your project.

Not much to add except be sure to purchase the paint that you think you want and test it in your home. We just had our upstairs remodeled and the designer only used a fan deck to pick the wall colors. I later painted samples in my house, in my light and ended up changing 4 of the 7 colors. I am very glad I did! I also do not agree that the lightest colors on a card will show as white. That is not the case at all. In fact some "whites" show as color when they are on the walls. An example of this is BM Patriotic White. It shows as pale blue, not white. Light colors can look amazing in bright light. Go with your desires but be sure to test the colors first. I am thinking that hiring a color expert is not such a bad idea. Darker trim can be wonderful. Go for it and post pictures, please.

Liquid dish soap and water, mix just like you were doing dishes. That will work just fine on the poly. It will also work on the unfinished stuff, maybe with a toothbrush to get in cervices. That will raise the grain on the unfinished wood, however. You might try paint thinner on the unfinished wood. That can still raise the grain, but should do so less. Sanding will restore the surfaces. 150 grit with a hand sanding block.

No. Hollow core doors are manufactured with 1/4" thick(or thinner) plywood. I know of no way to paint a door like that to keep the weather out of the many gaps in the top/bottom/edges.
