I'm not one for frozen foods but found one that looked/sounded ok...

Shrimp Stir Fry...I made this in the steps required (meaning I opened each packet, put in pan and didn't see anything unusual) It looked, smelled, and tasted wonderful UNTIL...I hit the nail, yes a nail, brand new shiny nail the size of a large tack with the tip broken off. I didn't realize what I hit until I spit it out and there it was!

I have tried to call and email this company, all I get is a full mailbox! I try not to dwell on this but I'm so frustrated about not being able to talk to a human-being about it. Like how does a nail get into a veggie package, I know it wasn't in the shrimp bag...had to be veggie bag

Anything like this happen to any of you?

Yes, I found what looked like bb's in a Lion's Choice sandwich. I didn't say anything, but should have. I couldn't eat there for years afterwards.

Haven't gotten any thing like that so far, but it seems to be getting more common.

If you can't get through by phone or email, send them a letter through regular mail.

The shock of getting a REAL letter might get their attention.

Great question! That is something that really concerns me. I want a greenhouse that is resilient to many challenges and so we are building strategies into the design. Among the many years I have been researching this, here are many of the following design strategies I have come across and am seriously considering: Passive Solar Design Orient the greenhouse so that most of the glazing faces south and is angled to best take advantage of the sun. In the winter, the sun's lower position means its rays penetrate more deeply into the greenhouse, warming all the surfaces. The design takes advantage of this by having many heat sinks (aka "high thermal mass" or "thermal stores") which soaks up the heat, holds it and then releases it when the sun goes down, extending the heating time frame. The northern wall is heavily insulated to reduce heat loss. Starting a design with Passive Solar principles in mind is a strong first step in making your greenhouse more resilient because it is not dependent on fossil fuels for it to work. However, it has its limitations. It is great for season extension and when combined with other strategies can be used for four season growing. Just as the name implies, the greenhouse is largely underground, often with just a glass roof. By limiting the glass, you are limiting all the ways that warm air can escape and cold air can get in during the winter. The beds are all raised and the pathways are sunken which keeps the plants safely above the coldest air. The cold air sinks and then gets warmed by the earth, rises and the cycle continues. The convenience of simply walking from one part of your house and into the greenhouse is huge -especially in the winter with high snow- but you also have the advantage of sharing heat. When the sun is out in the winter, you can open the connecting door and let in the extra heat into your house. At night you can let your house's heat into the greenhouse. However, it is not as simple as it sounds. It is best to design a system from the outset that circulates the heat naturally -often just opening a door does not create a significant enough draft to really circulate the air. And, to really generate heat for your house, you would need it to get to temperatures too hot for the plants. So, this is not something you should count on. Also, in the winter, greenhouses generate a lot of humidity which could create problems for your house. Subterranean Heating and Cooling System (aka "Climate Battery or "Seasonal Store") This innovative heating system captures the hot air of the greenhouse in the summer and stores it underground; and cooler, dryer air comes up to replace it. Over the course of the summer, the earth below the greenhouse has so many BTUs stored that you can actually heat your greenhouse in the winter with summer heat. To heat a 1200 square foot space, it requires a slow moving fan that uses the equivalent amount of electricity it takes to power a large refrigerator. The fact that SHCS takes the hot humid air, puts in underground and cooler, dryer air replaces it, means that you are controlling the excess humidity -a really handy feature- and you are both cooling and heating the space with the same system. It is simply taking heat from one area, storing it, and then moving it again when needed. This is a form of Geothermal Heating only it is cheaper and it also has the dehumidifying feature so needed in a greenhouse (and the humid air of the greenhouse makes for a super efficient system because of the phase change that occurs). In terms of a power outage, I would feel comforted that my plants and trees would be sitting on top of my heat storage even if the fan that circulates the air could not operate. For houses, the payback period is between 5 to 7 years (with government tax incentives). Unlike SHCS, Geothermal can be used to both heat the greenhouse and the house. Water is one of them. Often in a Passive Solar Greenhouse, there a large amount of water barrels used to absorb heat when the sun is out and then release it when the sun goes down. Many have reported great results from doing this, others not so much. The main limitation is that water takes up so much space that could be otherwise used for plants. There are other phase change materials that can store a lot more heat for a fraction of the space. And SHCS is a phase change. The hot humid air is pushed underground where is the cooler temperature forces a due point. The water vapor is release, carrying with it the heat. Sunny John (who promotes SHCS) estimates that five times the amount of heat is stored because of the phase change. http://greenhousefashions.blogspot.com/ Thermal Solar in Radiant Heated Beds Using thermal solar panels, you can heat water or some other liquid, and run that through a radiant heat system that heats the soil of your beds instead of the air which is much more efficient and less heat is lost through the glazing. Plants and trees need their roots to be warm more than the air around them. If their roots are toasty than they can take a fair amount of cold air from time to time. However, some plants may get out of whack because they do need a certain amount of heat in proportion to the light they receive. How you run the pipes through your soil is a bit of a design challenge. You probably don't want them directly in the soil because you can inadvertently burst a pipe when working with tools. You may be able to design it into the walls of the beds. What I plan to do . . . I am concerned about Peak Oil (and Peak Everything!), Climate Change and economic uncertainty and it may seem that building a greenhouse might be extravagant with such concerns but I think greenhouses will become a handy feature of a house in the future. Then I learned about SHCS and thought that I could integrate that into the design as well. However, when we finally found a property that had enough southern exposure, we find now that the high water table is probably too high and may interfere with the SHCS tubing. So, we probably won't do the pit design and I am hoping that the heat storage below will provide the freeze protection that a pit design would give us in a power outage. I am also concerned that being in Massachusetts I might not get enough solar exposure to heat the greenhouse year round. We are looking into another heat source -any suggestions? So now we are considering geothermal. We have natural gas for our house and I am concerned that although the price of natural gas is not so bad now that in the future it will be. I also rather not use a fuel that is sometimes retrieved by fracking. Geothermal is so expensive in upfront costs that we may not be able to afford it, however, our state does offer some loans and there are federal tax incentives. Geothermal would allow us to both heat our house and greenhouse, however, we would not get the benefit of the dehumidifying that the SHCS would provide us. I'd like to do a hybrid system but we are not sure if we can afford both. In addition, we are designing a rain catchment system with an underground cistern and a root cellar. With the typical rainfall we get in New England, we could provide all the water we need for our greenhouse, household and gardens if we have a cistern big enough to store the water during rainy periods. As for what to do when we go away. We have a number of neighbors who are just wonderful! This spring we created a garden on our property for three households to use. We built it all together and when one of us goes away, we have each other to look after the garden plots. -I used to have to hire someone to water my garden! We plan on doing something like that for our greenhouse where we invite friends and neighbors to enjoy it on some level whether is by sharing the harvest or spending time in it on a cold wintery day to lift their spirits. I have rescued many plants over the years and taken cuttings and/or diggings from many more. But I always follow certain guidelines. This is how I determine what I will take and what I won't, for what it's worth: 1. I never take anything from private property without permission. 2. I never, ever take cuttings from public gardens or botanical gardens, as those are display gardens. If everyone took cuttings, there would soon be nothing to display. 3. I am very cautious about taking wildflowers from the wild, as most don't transplant well. And if there is any chance they are endangered or threatened in the wild, I leave them alone so they can grow and reseed where they should be. BUT... 4. Anything in the path of a bulldozer is fair game. Like most of you, if I know an area is being developed, I figure I'm saving the plants that I take from certain death. That's how my mother got the beautiful butterfly orchid that I've had for more than 30 years now. 5. Plants that are obviously not natives but are growing in wild areas are usually just fine to dig and take. They don't belong there, anyway. Exceptions would be areas that have been deliberately seeded with wildflowers, etc. But I have found all sorts of neat things that volunteered in areas where they really didn't belong. 6. I have taken plants from roadside ditches, both native and exotics, for my enclosed ponds. I never dispose of any of them in any way that would release them back into our natural waterways. But I've snatched water hyacinths, water lettuce, pickerel weed, arrowhead, duckweed and more from ditches in the past. This is probably an activity that is punishable by fines, at least, since water hyacinths are such a terrible nuisance in our streams & rivers. But I know that any I take are "out of the system" for good, so I don't feel too bad. (Just be aware that if you are caught taking them, you could be fined, at the very least. The law probably doesn't care HOW responsibly you use them.) 7. And lastly, anything already broken off and laying on a sidewalk, or in an aisle, or on a path is fair game. That's going to be a goner if you DON'T pick it up and pot it, so why not? Just my thoughts. No pics yet because nothing's been able to be "redone". Still plywood subfloors, no appliances, and a ripped out bathroom. I realized yesterday that the refinished floor has areas that are duller than others, so now I need to get the guy back to recoat. It didn't show up until the floor was fully dry and starting to "cure" but it's very noticeable. :-( The entire finished basement has to be ripped out (walls, ceiling and all insulation) and the floor and all the framing disinfected. Environmental companies don't do this and not many pest control ones do either. I've gotten estimates ranging from $4400 to $9600 for the same job. It involves guys wearing chemical suits, respirators, extractor fans, disinfectant spray, the whole 9 yards. The neighbors will no doubt be appalled at the goings on. Then I have to get an electrician in to examine the visible wiring for damage. I'm sure there will be some. Haven't been able to address the garage floor issue because the old refrigerator is sitting there waiting for my son to arrange to remove it, which apparantly is a more complicated scenario than hosting the Olympic Games. Nobody rents a truck with a power liftgate, nobody we know has a trailer hitch for one of those tow-behind things, and none of his friends have time to assist. When the rest of the house gets painted, the walls will be sealed with BIN first. I realized that the garage floor is actuallly painted (the grey stuff) so I may be lucky and perhaps a good scrubbing with Mex will help. (TSP isn't allowed to be sold in our state) I have to say, the rodent stink is just as bad as the dog smell. Different but equally disgusting. This has been a huge financial sinkhole. What should have been no more than $35K in renovations has already surpassed $65K that in outlay to date, and there is still another $40K committed to (and necessary) but not yet done and paid for. In the end this house will have cost me $100K more than its selling price and neither the house itself nor the area justifies that number. I could have bought any of a number of houses listed at that level over the past 3 years which would have gotten me more square footage as well. And fewer problems!

On my back, no. But I used to fairly often wake up with my sheets and pillowcase streaked with blood and mysterious injuries in random places. It took me months to figure out that the cause was my engagement ring. At the time, I had a marquis stone and would wear it to bed. I'm an active sleeper, so what was happening was that I was moving around and adjusting the covers, which was causing the stone to move to the palm side of my hand. So any time I moved anything with my hands, I was digging the ring into my skin. The only way I realized what was happening was when my husband grabbed my hand one afternoon, kind of twisted to hold hands with me, and my ring ended up slicing his palm. I didn't realize it was that sharp, so the next time I had an injury, I inspected my ring and found blood. I have a different ring now, but I won't wear any sort of pronged ring to bed anymore. Anyway, just a thought!

Youngest DD once found a shiny nut, like from a nut and bolt, in her pot pie. She wrote a very business-like letter mentioning she should receive some kind of refund. They sent her 5 coupons for any of that company's frozen products. She didn't choose pot pies, but full large pans of her favorite lasagna! LOL

My daughter had a pencil baked into a loaf of bread. I've had BB's (probably ball bearings from machinery) in some meat in a packaged meal.
In a restuarant, I had a big fat green worm in my shredded lettuce that came on my taco plate.

My mother found a worm in a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup. This was back in the early 70's. Not sure what the outcome of that was.

Hey my mom found a dragonfly right on top inside the can of spaghettios. That was the last spaghettios we had in that house.

Mom's friend found a nail in her McD's Yogurt - a fake finger-nail!!! I still get gaggy thinking about it. She didn't sue them either.

I had a gold ??? in a bowl of corn flakes once...it had run through the flake maker, because it was the same shape as a corn flake!!! I wrote to the company and got all sorts of product certificates and a nice letter from the president of the company....
Later, I took the "flake" with me to a jeweler, and sure enough, it was gold...he gave me $50 for it as scrap metal!! I was smiling............

This nail wasn't my first...about 8 years ago, I stopped at a service station and bought a frozen burrito and microwaved it, my second bite was a nightmare! A dried out rat skin... with fur!!! I threw up all day over that one

Eating a fried oyster last month at a restaurant, I chewed on something hard. I thought it was a piece of tooth but it is a small whitish ball with a tiny protrusion on it. A pearl? One day I'll take it to a jeweler to have it looked at.

I found a bottle cap in my ham/asparagus roll up at a swanky restaurant a long time ago in Satellite Beach, FL. And my aunt found half of a snake in a can of green beans, she made the company buy her a new pan. lol And I got part of a cockroach wing in a burger about 35 years ago, also in FL, at Burger King. That upset me, because I loved Whoppers so much and then I was so turned off of them for years and years.

My co-worker found a dead mouse in a slice of pizza from the pizzeria next door. I once found a worm in salad. The worst (in my opinion) is when I found a spider web and live spider in a bag of green grapes!

I was cleaning shrimp and found a nail inside one. Guess he swallowed it.
Found a large black bug in a can of vegetable beef soup.
My son was about 6 and took a sip of DH's coke from the can. He spit out a piece of glass.
I wrote to them and they actually sent a rep to the house with cases and cases of coke and
every product and promo item they had! LOL

Eating out with a friend, she got a bandaid in her order of scrambled eggs. At first, she thought it was a piece of ham. I bit into a rock when I had some cuban black beans and rice at a cuban restaurant. Probably the beans had not been washed or picked through. I bought cilantro once and started picking out the leaves I wanted to use and there was this beautiful, green, HUGE katydid among my leaves. I have also stuck my hand in a box of brand new cereal only to find a ton of little worms (soon to be moths) and their web-like silk.

When I was a kid, was eating one of those cake treats we called Snow balls...they were chocolate, rounded, had a marshmallow cream in the center, and sort of an "elastic-y" pink covering, sprinkled with coconut...and in the middle of it was a piece of twisted metal.

The worst was...my mother's mother opened a can of kraut and found a man's thumb in it. Guess it got cut off on the machinery and went right on into a can.

This was before lawsuits were the norm.

My high school biology teacher told us (her class) that she had worked at a frozen food plant, picking rocks out of boxes of spinach. She once saw a snake and let it go through. I am terrified that sort of thing still happens!

I had a caterpillar in a can of green beans once - Stokely's, I think. Took me years to get over, and even now I make sure to eyeball my veggies before I eat em.

I'm glad woodswell shared where to report this.

I found a wooden branch in a package of frozen broccoli. It caused no damage, and I reported it to the store where I had bought it. Good to know there's a national number.

I found two pieces of broken glass in an Arby's roast beef sandwich. Took it right back to the counter, but they wouldn't do a thing about it. I eat/chew carefully, so it didn't hurt me, but sheesh -- you'd think they'd at least refund my money.

That was in the mid 70's and the last time I ate at Arby's.

I bit into a piece of glass in my pizza from the local pizzeria.My son bit into a nut(nuts & bolts) in a hot pocket type sandwich.And one time DG and i stopped at Der Weinerschenitzel and he got a couple chili dogs.The first one he was eating he bit into something and when he pulled it away we discovered it was like the hotdog was stuffed with saran wrap.We turned around and took it back.

This past thanksgiving i bought a Foster Farms Turkey for dinner and whhen i went to prepare it found it had a LOT of feathers,so i ended up plucking the darn thing.I took pictures of all the feathers i plucked then the next day i called FF and told them and also sent an email with a copy of the feather pictures.A couple weeks later i got 4 coupons worth 25.00 each for any foster farms product.So that wasn' too bad.

When I went to Japan in '59 to meet Sue's ship and we went to Pusan, Korea by another ship, as she had quite a lot of freight with her, they sent the van from our farm in a rural city about 60 miles away to meet us.

We stayed for a day or so at our mission house in Pusan, then set off across country to our location.

After a few hours on the road, we stoppped at a restaurant for dinner and someone had fried rice with vegetable, small pieces of meat, etc.

Included in one dish (I'm not sure whether it was Sue's) was a fried fly. We picked out the fly and some of the food around it with a spoon and discarded it, then calmly continued eating. If it was Sue's dish, I think that someone traded plates with her.

Sue, trained in Hospital Diet and Management at Cornell, was quite distressed. And equally so at the equanamity with which we approached the issue!

Different strokes for different folks ... or should that be ... different vultures for different cultures?

When one lives with refugees, who'd left their homes with only the clothes on their backs, and where the communities into which they'd moved were hugely disrupted by war, meaning that much of business, industry and commerce were closed down or at least disrupted, so no jobs available ...

... one gets a different outlook on life!

I think that growing up on a farm does some of that, as well.

A lot of city folks, receiving their food in pristine packages, have little conception of what the real world is like.

Just this past week there has been a story in the local newspaper about a girl who found a couple worms in her salad (at the end of their meal) in a chain restaurant. After complaining loudly,she and her boyfriend were comped the meal. She left her purse behind and the waitress, in checking to find her name, found a jar with worms in it, so the restaurant called the police. As the officer was taking down the facts the boyfriend came back in looking for the purse. That's one way to get your picture in the paper, get arrested.

I once bit into a doughnut from Dunkin Donuts and cracked a tooth. I never found out what I crunched on, I must have swallowed it! When I was a kid, maybe four years old, I swallowed a thumbtack. The way dumb little kids put things in their mouth! My mother screened my poop for several days but did not find it. Stomach acid protects us from many bad things!

Last night at the Golden Arches, after the investment group meeting, I bought a large Hot Choc. We get one of the loyalty cards,. then get half a dozen punches as our friends buy ... taking turns getting a card. Some of us qualify for senior's discount, also.

When I sipped ... really watery! I was finishing up some of the copying on my income tax, prior to dropping it into the slot at the Can. Rev. Agency just before midnight ... so it's a wonder that I noticed!

Took it back, and they said that sometimes it does come out that way, gave me a new cupfull.

Next time some of you guys have a sabbatical ...

... how about going to spend it on a farm?

Those nails, nuts, ball bearings. etc. that fell off of the machinery ... were well boiled and cleaned up by the processing machinery.

Not so great if one cracks a tooth on one, for sure.

Oh, and by the way ...

... what's worse than finding a worm in an apple?

Half a worm, of course!

(Blame it on the dog!)

Growing up on a farm I probably ate a ton of dirt and lots of bugs without even knowing it. Things didn't get washed that well and sometimes they still don't. I washed some greens I thought very well and was stir frying them when I noticed something moving. Some kind of big bug that blended in with the leaves. I picked him out, dead by then, tossed him, then ate the greens. As my Dad use to say, it is just extra protein.

Years ago on my way home from work I stopped at the grocery store. One of things I bought was a bag of the miniature size Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. I was starving and craving sweets, so I ripped open the bag when I got into the car and grabbed two of the candies. It was night, so it was dark... I simply peeled the wrappers and little paper cup things off and popped the candies in my mouth as I drove along. When I got home and got the groceries inside, I took another candy out of the bag and peeled off the wrapper. There were little bitty ALIVE bugs crawling all over the peanut butter cup! Unwrapped another one -- BUGS. Unwrapped a couple more -- BUGS.

Took me years and years and years before I could eat another one, and to this day I don't pop anything in my mouth without looking at it first.

I bit down on a Hersey's candy bar and bit into a bright shiny staple. I got 5 coupons for more candy bars.

The worst thing that happened to me at a posh restaurant, the dessert was served, I looked down at it and the top was crawling..I picked up the plate and took it to the kitchen. They were shocked!! They had about 24 of the same dessert lined up ready to serve. After looking in the bag where they had purchased the topping from Wal-Mart..there were the culprits looked something like maggots. Can you imagine what they said to Wal-Mart??? I think it was malted milk balls.
They gave me another dessert. Some of the people I was with had eaten theirs ....gross!!!! When the checks were passed around it said many thanks, no charge for your meal. Saved me $25.

One summer I worked at a posh resort. We grew our own flowers and made floral arrangements for the dinner tables. One morning I was removing the old arrangements and replacing them with fresh ones when a big ugly green caterpillar crawled out of one of the old blossoms. That would have been so gross if it would have happened to a guest!

Oh yuck yuck yuck YUCK! Some of these are so awful!

I found a rusty metal and plastic part in a Diet Coke from McDonald's once. It had fallen off of the fountain drink machine. I just brought it up and showed them, and they said "Oh, thanks". I should have swallowed it and sued. ;)

I once found a rag baked into an english muffin.

Found a stick in a bag of chips.

Claude found staples in a hamburger from Harveys.

A couple of years ago (I shouldn't admit this), the kids and I were staying in a hotel because Claude was out of town for a few days on a business trip and our house had recently been broken into and I didn't want to stay home alone..... Anyhow, we went out to A&W for supper. It was an A&W and Country Style Donuts all in one. I was eating my burger and I felt something hard on my tongue. I picked it out and it was a piece of bone or tooth or something. I was SO grossed out. I brought it up to the cash and showed the woman working. She was incredibly apologetic, and said she'd send it off to their head office to have it analyzed. She went way over the top sucking up. She refunded our meal and gave us coupons for future meals, brought Sophie for a tour of the back of the restaurant, gave the kids suckers and A&W mugs and stickers, and let Sophie fill up a box of a dozen donuts. I kept saying that all that wasn't nescessary - I just wanted to let her know. But she was very insistant, so I thought "Well hey, why not?"

On our way back to the hotel, arms laden with free goodies, I noticed that a big piece of one of my teeth was missing. It had been cracked before (Ben sapped my calcium when I was pregnant, I think), and I had chipped a small piece out already. It's not even like I had chipped it on something I ate - it must have just sort of plopped off while I was eating the burger.

I was SO embarrassed when I realized. I should have gone back to tell her, but I just couldn't.

Have you ever found any unedible in the edible Like a NAIL!!
