Need help quick! Can this craiglist find be stripped/refinished?

I found this Pottery Barn table and chair set on craigslist today for $150!! http://columbus.craigslist.org/fuo/1440842741.html

Only thing is, the stain is too light/golden. I would like to strip and restain a dark, espresso color. Is it possible to DIY this, and am I getting into too much work that it is no longer such a great deal or worth it? If it can be done relatively easily, any tips? THanks!

If you read the ad on craigslist carefully, it states that the chairs are from Pottery Barn. It does not state that the table is from Pottery Barn.

I would be hesistant to try to DIY, especially if you have never done this before. The chairs seem to have a lot of detail to them, so that might make it harder.

The rush seats would be a pain to work around, unless they can be removed in 1 piece and reinstalled.

Pine is notorious for blotching (unevenly absorbing stain). Blotching is one of the few things that cannot be corrected easily by a 'do over' strip and refinish. However, your plan has other flaws: Pine is also notoriously soft and dents easily, very easily. So children playing with cars and trains are going to damage it in quick order. Even putting on a finish, you have a less dense core under about 0.004"-0.008" of finish. It's not going to prevent said scratches and dents. It's sort of like a chocolate shell on a marshmallow. A wax finish is the closest thing to no finish at all. It's not protective, not waterproof, and not very durable. (I always tell people there is a big difference between a wax finish and a _waxed_ finish.) And the last piece of advice: don't get yourself all upset over "stuff." It's just furniture.

The floors really are the right balance between light and dark. They look light in sunlight and medium brown in regular light. This works well in this small house. I was concerned about the variation in board color because they used short boards throughout the house. As you can see there is some variation but it seems to be just enough to be interesting. Thank you all for your kind words. Rosie and Oly, my grandmother is still living and is very excited for me to move in. She's encouraged me along the way but has chosen to wait to see it until I am settled. It makes her very happy to know that I am caring for her home and making it my own. CLBlakely, I removed the carpet in the kitchen to reveal tile that is covered with dried on nasty carpet glue that isnt easily removed. I'd considered trying more extreme methods to remove the glue but everyone agrees that it's wasted effort-- if it can be removed, the tile is likely to be stained. I havent decided what to do yet. Carrying the wood into the kitchen isnt a good option and I don't want to replace flooring until I remodel the kitchen next year. Whatever I do will likely go on top of the existing (asbestos) tile. For now, I will likely get an inexpensive rug. Again, thank you all for your encouragement and ideas!

Sanding frees the lead into the dust---NOT GOOD. Stripping keeps the paint damp and cohesive---GOOD. (Unless the resulting goop dries out.) I can say fairly positively that wood is not poplar(poplar is listed as a hardwood---but is relatively soft and does not wear well under use.) I should have been more precise. The back woods do indeed look like pine, but the drawer fronts are mahoghany, IMHO. Mahoghany cut over 50 years ago(Old growth) had a much more dense grain than modern stuff(New growth).

Wow thanks for the feed back! We are lucky to have this set. The table is (was) lovely. It is a square pedestal and round top. For storage we took the top off the pedestal and left it on its side. I hadn't looked at it for a long time and both sides have split in half, so needs to be re glued. Gracie01 I'm not good identifying wood you are right it might be maple. My father-in law used shellac on everything, even is cane. I can see a drip mark in this chair so I suspect this set has a few coats of something on it. How should I clean it, it looks dirty to me?

Several years ago I found a product called Ready Strip. It's not toxic and goes on like a paste (no drips) that you apply with an inexpensive chip brush. It goes on green and turns white with the finish is ready to scrape off. Due to the detailing on the chairs, you'll need to use smaller metal scrapers, but it definitely can be done. If the rush seat doesn't come off, just tape it off really well. For years I bought the Ready Strip online, GVC used to carry a kit complete with the rinse off spray and scraping tool. I haven't bought RS online in a while, but I noticed my local Mom & Pop hardware store carries it (Elliots if you leave in the DFW area). I saw the other day Sherwin Williams carried a heavy duty version, but your project won't require stripping 100 yrs worth of old paint, so you probably won't need that kind.

As for the deal, go for it. Even if the table isn't Pottery Barn, good quality chairs can cost $100 or more each.
