To update your phone you go to itunes. When I plug my phone into computer itunes automatically opens and asks if I want to update. I know this isn't much help, and I barely understand it any better than you do.

The first time you sync your device, you are asked if you want to merge data, replace data on the device, or replace the data on your computer. When you choose to merge information, any differences between the data will be mingled together. If you choose to replace information, information from either the computer or device will overwrite the information on the other. These options can not be undone. After that, anytime you connect your device to your computer, iTunes opens and syncs with your device according to the settings in iTunes.

I really don't want to mess this up.

I have an att store 10 min away, the apple store is half hour and you have to wait for hours to get help.

DD's s/o likes to eat, but has so much going on, he doesn't get to spend much time with DD & DGS, let alone have time to help me. He said he would, but I hate to take away his time with them and his study time. But the weather is getting nicer. Maybe if I put ribs on the smoker...........! Maybe this weekend, if there is time. I know he has to study, and DD & I have a bridal shower on Sun, but maybe there will be time.

I'm just chicken. If someone can tell me which choice is best, I'll just go ahead and connect them.

My Apple store makes appointment. I scheduled the last one on line and only waited 5-10 minutes when I got there. I totally understand about not wanting to mess up--making things worse than ever. DS fixed up mine so maybe I'll send him over for that dinner--just kidding!

Tami, I just got an iPhone and while it is tons easier to use and learn than the Blackberry it replaced, I have to say that the lack of printed assistance is unbelievable. I have windows 7 and haven't figured out how to open two internet windows at the same time on here, so I can't tell you what exactly my choices were.
I can't help with the iphone part, but if windows 7 is similar to XP, to open a new window or tab, just go to the top of the page and click on FILE, and then choose New Tab or New Window I prefer new tabs over new windows.

I just read the manual that comes in the phone. I don't know that it can be printed, but I read it and it helped a lot. To update your phone, simply turn on iTunes then plug in your phone with the usb cord and follow the instructions. It's pretty easy.

To open a new browser on your computer, you can either open a new tab at the top of your screen, or hit "ctrl N". It will open a new browser.,

Don't bother with the cord for syncing calendar and contacts. You can do this automatically, over the air. I do it with Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar, but I just looked it up for Yahoo, and you can do it with Yahoo, too. I assume you're already getting your Yahoo mail on the iPhone, and I am including a link from Yahoo for how to set up the iPhone to sync with Yahoo Calendar and Contacts.

Once you do this, your calendar and contacts online will stay in sync with the calendar and contacts on your iPhone automatically, within seconds of any change. And then you'll be able to view the online calendar from any computer, at home or elsewhere.

Your other sync settings will depend on what how you want to use the iPhone. But here's a quick run-through. Feel free to email me for more information.

First of all, make sure you have iTunes installed on your computer. Then connect the iPhone to your computer with the cord that came in the original box.

The first thing that pops up is the same dialog box that pops up whenever you connect to any storage device. I only use this dialog box if I have pictures on the iPhone and want to transfer them to my computer.

After that, the sync starts automatically. To select your options for sync, you go into iTunes. About halfway down the left-side column is an entry for your device. Click on that.

Across the top of the page, you will now see the categories for sync settings, i.e., "summary," "info," "apps," etc. Under "summary", at the bottom of the page, make sure the option for "open iTune when this iPhone is connected" is checked.

If you've set up the Yahoo over-the-air sync, then ignore "info." Under "apps," click "sync apps." Also, if you want to change the organization of your apps, you can do it here by drag-and-drop, and the new organization will sync to your iPhone.

I don't use special ringtones, but if you do, then go to the "ringtones" second and click to sync.

Under "music," you can either choose to have your entire music library sync, or just choose individual playlists. I choose "all," but I don't have that much music.

If you want to sync movies, tv shows, and books, choose those settings. (If you're not already doing it, do try some of the ebook reader apps, like iBooks and the Kindle app. And if you have a Netflix account, do get the free Netflix app and try watching a movie on the iPhone, just for the novelty of it!)

Here's what I did for "photos." I set it to sync to a folder called "iTunes pictures" that I created on my computer. Then you can fill that file with the pictures you want to keep on your iPhone.

That's about it. I hope it's helpful, but feel free email me or write more in this thread.

Excuse me if I'm hijacking the thread, but my DS just pointed out something I didn't know about my phone. If you have the google ap, you can do an internet search by speaking the topic of your search. Just press the microphone, say the word (tsunami, or whatever), and for me it the search is really fast and you don't have to use the keyboard.

Yup, Google's voice search is great. And don't forget Dragon Dictation, which will do a speech-to-text translation of your dictation to use in email, text message, etc.

Thanks for the info. Now I will go and read and see what I think I can do. Joann, you may be getting mail! My tech will be in the store tomorrow, and I may even go see him. He did tell me that I could come in and he would help me set up gmail. Don't know what I will use it for tho. I only use yahoo. I've been gone all day, don't know what we are doing tonight.

Dragon Dictation....thanks. I didn't know about that one. I've had good luck with google voice search, but I was researching SIDS which it had trouble with, but mostly it works great. I'll look into DD.

OK, I finally have my calander syned, I think. Looks like it. I've spent almost all day on it. Had to quit to start laundry and dishes. And of course, DH came home from work early! At least he's gone again. Had to take the door locks out and get new ones, the lock in the know quit working. Replacing the dead bolt and putting the old one in a different door. So while I house sit and do laundry, I'm back at this! I did download the free kindle app, but have not gone any farther with that.

Well, the phone has been synced, but I can't transfer my music. In the music section, it is pale grey and won't let me highlight or click on anything. Guess I will call Chris tonight. I have everything else done, so it shouldn't take him too long to show me how to do it. Or maybe he'll have to try to fix what I did wrong!
