Dark grey interior doors: a few questions?

I recently picked a wall color and moved onto the kitchen cabinet color when I ran across the black interior door thread. I immediately fell in live with the look and now I want to paint mydoor as a dark gray.

I'm trying to give my 2005 built tract home some character. I'm aiming for a modern/rustic craftsman cottage feel. The plan is to paint the walls SW Taupe Tone at 40%, the color reads a warm gray on my walls. The baseboards, trim and board &batten style wainscoting (in the foyer & main hallway) will be painted a slightly warm off- white, maybe Picket Fence by Martha Stewart. The floors will be a medium pecan-ish color. Current furniture includes a simple rustic dining table in a walnut stain and a large squared leather sectional in a very dark espresso color.

For the dark doors I found a wonderful graphite sort of color, Cracked Pepper by Behr Premium Plus. It's a really pretty soft black. I also found Seal by Martha Stewart. It is a very dark grayish brown. I was thinking of painting the kitchen cabinets that color.

Will it look strange to have both dark colors in close proximity to each other? When I have all the swatches together it looks alright, but maybe the two colors will look off in real life.

Whatever I go with I need the darker color(s) to work with the brown furnishings we have.

Here are some photos with not so great lighting. First one is taupe tone on the wall with cracked pepper (darkest shade) then seal (more brownish) then picket fence. The second photo shows the same swatches against the leather sectional.

And finally, what door hardware goes with either dark color. When I was planning on painting the interior doors white I was going to go with ORB. Will that work with a dark door? I'm not sure brushed nickel is the look I'm going for.

Hi!! Starter of the black/ charcoal door thread here!!

I'm looking into Antique Pewter hardware if we go with dark doors. A lighter gray could work with ORB. But I really like the antique pewter with black or super dark doors. Check out that finish. I know Emtek and Kwikset have it.

How close in proximity are the kitchen cabinets are to the door? I might try and do them a shade off of each other. But it may work as is. I'm one to try it. I wouldn't worry about them right next to the leather chair. IMO the leather is a neutral in the room. It'll work.

When I think of black door, I immediately think of an antique brass finish.

I got it... they are however a different style of home is all... that is to some degree. More modern in appearance. I'd personally go with something similar in colors as above meaning windows, door, fascia. I do think the garage and front door can be the same.. I don't think it, but know it. I would not put a red, nor yellow or other door on this home. The neighborhood is not conducive to that and I think too much white such as the garages and front door would not look right either. The colors I posted on the house above that is not the same style of your own is similar to what I'd do with a shade of white or a white that leans a pinch gray in gloomy or dim light such as Aesthetic White by Sherwin Williams. In bright light it will appear white though. It's an inspiration photo of colors only. A bit of freshness using a shade of white.

Why on earth would you want ANY white walls, to have any GRAY baseboard unless all other trim was gray? No. Paint all the trim,( not the door ) base included, in a satin version of your wall color. If this is a maintenance issue? It is not one. : ) Or ...............Paint all the trim, base , door and window casings in a deep gray with the egyptian cotton walls. Using an elevated sheen, satin. Leave the wood door if it is good condition, as is. There's no need to reinvent wheels.

White. It's the easiest to work around and will have the longest staying power. IMO interior doors shouldn't be a feature element of a home. Grey is on it's way out, and black works well in only certain styles of homes. You mention you have a lot of light, but what about in smaller spaces? Will black work well in the kids rooms or in bathrooms? You also should consider resale. If/when you sell most buyers will expect and want white doors. You'll need to be prepared to switch to that.

I agree with babs! I love dark gray doors!! The antique pewter would look great against it! What finish will you use? I am a big of satin.

So far I like antique pewter, here's one by weslock that is about $63 so not too bad compared to some of the other brands.

I'm not sure the lines of the rosette work ( would really prefer square lines), plus I just put in new fixtures in the powder room in a wrought iron finish. Will that look okay with silver toned door knobs? And lastly, would you do hinges to match the pewter knob or ORB so they just blend into the door?

When I talked to my builder last week about interior doors and hinges and possibly going with AP or ORB, he said there weren't AP hinges and that SN (or BN?..can't remember) is what is usually used with them. But I'm going in person to a hardware store to look at these finishes in person. This way I can see each finish and shape by each manufacturer before making any decision. I can make more informed decisions by looking in person. I totally overlooked a front door handleset because it looked completely ordinary online. I saw it on someone's front door and loved it. I think in person, you'll be able to get a better feel for what you like.
