Hoosier Cabinet

Found this on craigs list and I love it, just don't know what I'd do with it...no room in the kitchen. I don't know much about these but seems like a good deal based on what I've seen on ebay. Any thoughts?

Based on the Hoosiers I've seen (on Craigslist) in both CA and CO I think it's a little high (the price). But those are totally different areas than where you are now so take what I wrote with a grain of salt.

As a girl I had one in my bedroom and it was my desk -- lots of room for all kinds of goodies!

Its a good deal for my area. There was one this week on CL for $800.That being said I am not sure if it is of the same vintage or not. It is sad when we run out of room for our finds, isn't it?

I checked VanDykes and Kennedy, both have parts for Hoosiers. It appears that the porcelain top manufacturer is now out of business and the replacements are no longer made.

I tried to get to the bottom of this last night. BTW: Mama Goose photo shows the ONLY other one I've seen with the same kind of "pull down tin bin". Anyway, I didn't figure out any more than you all have already told me. Baking Table, YES. Hoosier, NO. Two different pieces? Good Possibility. However, I do know those two have been together for at least 70yrs. ALL of the "doors" appear to be made the same way. Not sure about the drawer slides. Upper door hinges are the same odd "shape" as the lowers, but, they don't look exactly alike, and, lowers are larger. All the little porcelain looking knobs look alike, but, if you took them off, lined them up on a table? I doubt any two would be "exactly" identical. I'll know more about markings, etc...when I move it. Hopefull this weekend. Upper and Lower "married" back in a time when this was not an antique, or worth anythig more than what it was designed for? Again, good possibility because I was told.... "poor folks had poor ways" and you used what you had to make what you needed. I saw an U-G-L-Y pie safe on ebay. Just like the one I traded for this baking cabinet. $4,000.00 (people are nuts, this was ONE plain jane flat out ugly pie safe...just like mine). I sure like this cabinet better than that pie safe that stayed hidden in the back of a walk-in closet. Now, where am I going to store the blankets? LOL!!

Need door and drawer pulls for my Sellers Hoosier cabinet

Is there any maker's mark on the pulls? I'm finding thousands of drawer pulls for Seller's cabinets, but none styled like these. We need more information to narrow the search. What is the material? Plastic? Die cast metal and what metal? Do you have an approximate date of manufacture of the cabinet? Are you certain these are original pulls? If you are not trying to restore to original parts or appearance, you could replace all the pulls and have a consistent appearance. If you do that, buy a couple extra pulls, put in a bag, and store in the cabinet for spare parts.

Justerrilynn - I'm having problems with my old Mac and tried unsuccessfully to get either of two photos off my desktop that I previously uploaded to a Kitchens discussion by Cpartist. They're the only one's I have. Camera lent out and no cell phone! The thread with over 300 responses was entitled Why do all the kitchen's look the same? For anyone interested, I posted twice with the second picture further down the much better one if you click on it, showing my hoosier....unfortunately also shows the kitchen window (without trim) getting ready to be replaced, no backsplash, a temporary undercab light the electrician slapped to the wall until that area gets finished, the ceiling light hanging too low, etc. Many people posted great photos. I paid $800 for my Sellers Hoosier 25 years ago. Mine didn't have a sifter or rolling pin (both accessories raise the price) but was in perfect condition -- in the estate of the original owner, for whom it had been a wedding gift from her husband. I got it from a dealer, so I obviously paid their markup.

If this one looks as good in person as in photos, it's probably a good buy.

I have no idea about the value of it. But, the first time I realized what a Hoosier was......my friend had it in her laundry room & it was soooooo charming. It was a very useful piece in there for storage, too.

Depending on the availability in your particular area, that looks like a good fair price.

Brand new ones being made run about $2,500.

You say you do not know much about Hoosiers. If you are interested in a real collector's piece there are things that make or break the value. Many vintage ones do not have all the accessories and that definately affects the value, but they can be picked up individually on eBay and such. Has the piece been refinished? Is it a "real" Hoosier or one of the many other manufactured ones?

Is this piece worth $400 to you?

Thanks everyone. I really want it and I think it is worth the $400 to me. Just have to convice hubby it's worth the trip with his trailer to pick up even though I have no idea where to put it. We still have to re-do our famlily room and I'm thinking it may be a nice place to set up a bar in the FR. It won't fit in the kids room and I don't think it's the right style for my dining room. The laundry room is in my unfinished basement so I wouldn't waste it there. Decision decisions...
