Anyone Growing Sweet Sunshine or Hoosier Harmony?
Comments (20)I have a pretty good H. 'Hoosier Harmony'. It has (accidentally) had a lot of fertilization. Maybe that is the key. It also does well in containers with lots of water and fert. I have been growing the 2 sisters H. 'Sweet Sunshine' and H. 'Sunny Delight' for about 3 years now. Both are from the same batch of seeds from the cross that Bob Solberg did of H. 'Sweet Susan' and H. 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa'. I do like both, but for different reasons. Sunny Delight seems to have the best gold of any I have seen and is a very good grower. Sweet Sunshine, on the other hand, is a bit slower grower, but I really like the very round leaf shape and corrugation that is now showing as it matures. I have both growing in near full sun till about 3pm, along with most of my other fragrant ones. Previous years when I water regularly, most of them would stay looking pretty good. This year, between the heat, drought, and lack of extra watering, most of the fragrant ones look pretty rough right now, but Sweet Sunshine and Sunny Delight have held up better than most of the rest. Sweet Sunshine has a slightly better fragrance, but frankly both are a disappointment compared to even H. 'Fried Bananas'. If you just want to perfume the yard with fragrance, stick to H. plantaginea or H. 'Royal Standard'. Another one I just added this year is H. 'Tortilla Chip'. It is the all gold sport of H. 'Stained Glass'. It has excellent gold color, and the fragrance was pretty good. It did scorch pretty bad this year, and it is too early for me to know how good of a grower it is, but it might be worth a look. As a side note, my Sweet Sunshine, in it's 3rd year this summer, has put out a sport on 2 eyes. It looks pretty good so far as a medium green with a gold edge. I will divide it off next year if it comes back....See MoreGreen Painted Sellers Hoosier Style Cabinet
Comments (5)I'd say you did very well for the money. I am in the land where Hoosier Cabinets originated (Indiana, the "Hoosier State"), and tho you would think they would be ample in my neck of the woods, it's not so. They are not abundant, but neither are they scarce. They do go for a pretty penny in these parts. Unpainted (stained wood) typically go for $400 - $800+ range depending on size, style, manufacturer, number of original parts with it and condition. Painted for some reason tend to fetch a bit higher price. A local antique store had one just like yours, same colors, but no decals on the front doors. Every time I dropped in I drooled over it. (Either she had it cleaned up very well, or repainted it as exact to original colors as she could, because it was in great condition.) But when I inquired about purchasing I was told it was part of the owners collection and was only used to display her antique dishes and pottery, etc. Imagine my dismay one day when I walked it and there was a big empty space where that beautiful Hoosier Cab once sat. Owner had indeed sold it, and I was told she asked and got $1000. (Steep, but again, it was on the large side and great condition.) I was really bummed. So I'd say you got a good score! ;D...See MoreDoes anyone have painted white cabinets that have held up?
Comments (39)With regard to Thermofoil option: Yikes! I have yet to see a high quality option. The product is basically a sheet of plastic, printed to look either like wood or a high gloss lacquer. The MDF or particle board door is shaped and then a heater is applied to shape the sheet of plastic over the top and around the sides of the face. It is cooled and cut off along the back edge. Any cabinet next to an oven or dishwasher, will have issues. Period. Over time the sides tend to delaminate and you will get lifting and loose looking edges. Eventually they rip. Trying to match one, if something breaks a door is very difficult and expensive. If your cabinet line offers a free touch up kit- that is wonderful! Just imagine that when your counter top is being installed, they accidentally bump a door face. This is not a warning of an inferior finish- it is a thoughtful manufacturer....See MoreDoes anyone have Decora cabinets in “white” cabinets?
Comments (13)I'm in the process of picking out a white. They carry Sherwin Williams. I happen to love Benjamin Moore White Dove. They "say" they can match but I don't know if they can exactly. The only SW white that comes close to BM White Dove is SW Westhighland White. BM is a much better quality paint....See More- 4 years ago
