Looking for a pet/domesticated animal for my garden
Comments (27)Oh, takadi, I see you have been sucked in by those idyllic photos of bug-eating, ground-tilling, fertilizing, weed-picking chickens in the gardening magazines. Sunset, English Garden, Martha Stewart- they all have this cute fantasy about chickens in the garden. I got sucked in too. I got chickens. They do not eat the slugs, or the earwigs, or the pillbugs, but they eat my garden. They till alright, they dig up every new plant and scratch the older ones to death. They fertilize alright, all over the patio and their manure burns the plants. They leave the weeds alone. If you want to get Silkies for pets, get two hens, build a strong, well-ventilated coop with a run, and go out there and pet them every day as you feed them their layer ration, clean their coop, check them for lice and mites, change their water, and collect the occasional egg. Take a look at this site to get more info on chicken-keeping, or buy "Raising Chickens for Dummies". It will give you the straight dope on chickens in the garden. Comments (82)maryiln, thanks for the info on the possums, why do you say, i think i mean well? as i said before i have a rescue farm, i have been around animals since i was 7. the possums? yes i came here for info, i havent had one in years. as for other animals i know much about, as i stated i have many rescued animals. i have raised many orphaned, and hurt animals myself. i work with my animals 24/7, why wouldnt i mean well? they have the best of homes with me, and are very healthy. i love all animals as i said before. i appreciate your info, and hope that you dont take my questions that i am not knoweldgeable about animals, because that is far from the truth. Such as turtles, they arnt as easy as people think either. as for my possums, their doing well, and eating more food than the cat food. i wanted to ask alexandras, how big is your cage outside? we are going to build one on our land also. or marilyn if you have a big cage how big? were going to make in a natural habitat for them....See MoreWild animals as entertainment
Comments (10)I have no problems with Jeff Corwin and especially Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. He lived for conservation. What you see on TV was just the tip of the iceberg and it got millions of people to care about crocodiles and snakes. He spent millions of dollars worldwide on conservation projects and scientific research. Plowed the money made by the TV shows into conservation and upgrading Australia Zoo also a state of the art vet hospital where they treat and release thousands of injured and sick wild animals. The crocodiles captured were being saved or being used for research. Australia routinely shot them before Irwin and his father before him starting moving them or removing them to the zoo to save them. Anyone ever watch Wild Kingdom? They jumped out of helicopters and off jeeps and horses on to the animals to catch them because it is safer than drugs. All those animals that were caught and radio collared, measured and blood tested add to the database of knowledge about the animals. Many were also relocated because of human development. The more scientists know about a species, the better armed they are to save it. Zoos, animal parks, aquariums (that have safe, healthy habitats and healthy, happy animals) help the wild ones because they get people to care. I've never been to any such facility that didn't have education and conservation as their purpose. Zoo raised animals are being released into the wild, endangered species are being saved in zoos. California Condors, Black Footed Ferrets, Arabian Oryxs (an antelope) Prezewalski's Horses, Pere David's Deer have all been saved by captive breeding and are now back in the wild. There are many more projects like these going on world wide. Accredited zoos keep studbooks and have Species Survival Plans and share knowledge and animals for breeding around the world to benefit the various endangered species. It would be fabulous if all animals lived free and wild but it isn't an option with the billions and billions of people on this planet. Millions of whom could not give a rip if all animals were gone, all forests cut down, all ground drilled etc. as long as it doesn't affect them, personally, right now....See Morewild 'pet' bunny dies - unknown cause
Comments (17)As a child I raised wild rabbits twice. Once when a baby rabbit was injured by a cat, and once when a mother rabbit was killed by a cat, there were five in that litter. We raised the rabbits under a vets instruction, teaching them to feed and care for themselves, and when the vet deemed them ready, they were all released in the woods at an animal sanctuary. They were about six months old when they were released. We never intended to keep them as pets, but we did raise them each for over five months and they were very healthy. I have also had domestic rabbits. My currant baby is a Britannia Pettit named Shaq. My main concern would be the other rabbits you have. You will want to call your vet and let her know what happened, she may want to check your other rabbits to be sure they are healthy. Did your vet ever see Spice? Did she have any idea what might have caused her death? Rabbits are very fragile and they do hide sickness so it is very hard to tell there is a problem, even domestic rabbits do this. I wish I could help more, but I would agree with anyone who suggested not feeding them corn, it is not really good for them. Pellets, hay, and greens are best with very limited treats. I hope your other bunnies are with you for many more years, they are such wonderful animals!...See Moreafricanvioletlvr
