Photos of kids in frames up, how many years??

My kids are 6 8 and 9. I still have the older ones 8month baby picture up, the seconds 18 month up and maybe the youngest 4 yr photo in frames in my family room. I must ask, IS that too old to show them off?? My gut says put away but I can't bear

1. finding and printing a new picture,

2. putting my fave darling pics away for good..

3. Actually have to buy new frames....

What do you have and your opinions on this??

I can't imagine a time when I won't want to look at my twin boys professional baby photos. I have one 6 month old picture of each boy mixed among other family pictures (wedding photos, professional photos of my and DH's parents, etc.) all displayed on a hall table. Two are baby photos of DH and I that have been given to us by our families. People love to compare them to our kids baby pictures. I would leave a baby picture of each child there and mix in some more recent pictures with other treasured family photos.

Is this your house? Are you paying the mortgage? Then, by all means, keep what you like! They'll take down my boys' baby pictures after they drag me kicking and screaming from my home.

This is a most riveting subject, and a most interesting thread. I think there is a little bit of truth in many of the posts so far and I've changed my mind on this one at least five times. The actual print inside the frame gave me the impression of a photograph because of the fine white line like old photos get when they are damaged. That being said, one can take a photo of a drawing and parts of this picture are without a doubt hand rendered including the background and that could very well be a studio backdrop. My impression at this point is that this is likely a studio portrait and that it is in essence a composite with the facial features being the true rendering off a negative and the rest a lot of touch up and very poorly executed outright embellishment. If you'd like to see an example of a turn of the century hand painted studio backdrop, I can show you a large portrait of my great-grandfather and his brother sitting in a real chair, but with a very fake staircase behind them. LOL It was not an unusual practise, clear on up to the forties and fifties for some photographers to take portraits in black and white and hand tint and retouch them in the dark room. It wasn't because of the cameras not being able to, but the studios having the equipment to develop them. So seeing 'sketch marks' doesn't prove anything but the skill of the craftsman who took and developed the portrait because you're just as likely to see the editing on a real photograph as not. I have a portrait of my g'grandmother I'm inserting here because judging by her age it would have been taken about 1918-20. It has been hand tinted, and if you look at her blouse, it has obviously been hand retouched for detail and the bottom darkened out to extend the photo as much as possible to the paper to fill it. I think this is what happened to the boy's dress......it was probably enhanced by hand and the chair by imagination and lack of artistic ability. Even poor people scrounged up the money for portraits in the old days, God knows my ancestors weren't rich people and we have them to pass along. But they certainly were special enough not to be done on a whim. One portrait my g'parents had taken in the twenties was of my little aunt who was expected to die at birth, but lived until two years. So, they coughed up the money, even with ten kids, to have a portrait taken of her. I'm no expert and I'm not pretending to be but before I'd blow this one off as a fake, I'd have it checked out. Regardless of how it pans out, and even if it turns out to be a Cracker Barrel nostalgia shot..........it's a Jim Dandy and worth hanging on a wall just to see the mug on that kid.

Great cards! I can so relate to how many shots you need to take to get "the one" for your Christmas/holiday card. Before DD started college last year, every year I tried to shoot DD with the dogs. At one point I was shooting 3 dogs with DD. That was fun. Trying to get just one picture that makes the most of all subjects is a tall order. I would shoot about 20 pictures and then view them on the computer. Shoot more, repeat, until DD pronounced "enough already mom". Trying to shoot more would not result in anything better, as DD was sick of posing and the dogs can only eat so many treats in one sitting. LOL This year it will be just the dogs. Glad you started this thread, I need start working on our holiday photo this coming week.

That is so sweet, Trin! I am crazy about my angel, too! She was my last and BEST Christmas present I ever want. She is 7 1/2. She is not a materialistic child (she couldn't be as we share what money we have with our family and she knows this plus she had no grandparents to spoil her) She really, really wanted a Nintendo DS for Christmas this year. All her little friends had them already or were getting them for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, I said, "What if Santa doesn't bring you a Nintendo DS?" She said, "Mommy, I don't care. That's not what Christmas is about. It's about celebrating Jesus' birthday." That melted my heart. She is the sweetest child and I couldn't ask for a bigger blessing. (My only regret is that we couldn't go back and get her a sister like we had planned but I ended up quitting my job to stay at home.) I wish I knew how to put photos on the Internet so you all could see our sweet girl. (We have this new Apple Computer and my DH hasn't read how to upload pictures. We have a USB port we can run from the camera to the computer, but we don't know how to do that either! Maybe someone can help me!)

I agree with Janie, make some peanuts using Sculpy or paper mache, Dances. I hope Elmo stays safe this year, yikes! Make sure you unplug those lights when you're not around, Janie. Ideas for the peanut ornies came from pinterest. Adella- get the unsalted, roasted peanuts. Hobby Lobby has that cool yarn, it's by Yarn Bee, Chrysalis/california sister is the color, it's variegated and wild! Here's a link to the directions for the snowmen. When your kids get old enough you can go w/ a theme...such as toddler photos on one wall, sports pictures on a shelf, graduation photos along the hall, etc. If you want baby pics in a certain area, then just do it! :)

I have a large digital photo frame loaded with lots of photos. We saw it at a friend's house and had to get one! They are larger than the ones you see for sale in the stores and the frames can be customized to your decor. The company is PhotoVu. When we have people over they stand around and watch the photos! We bought a 19" one about 2 years ago, but they have come out with even larger ones since then. A great way to display many photos in one location.

Your house, your decision, although your decision seems largely based on not wanting to add additional work to your life. Aand who can blame you with three young children to care for.

If you think of the family room as the public area of your house, baby photos of people who are no longer babies may not be the best decor accessory. Although again, it is personal taste.

I certainly would not put them away for good, but I would more them to the bedroom or hallway.

My kids are younger than yours 3, 4 and almost 6, however, I get compliments on what I did. I have the first baby pictures of my kids (done at photographer) framed and they are all side by side. Underneath each one is thier current professional/school picture. People who visit comment on what a great idea it is.

To answer your question, if you like the photos keep them up and on display. My kids love seeing pictures of themselves.

Just rotate them for fresh ones in the family room -- and start a lovely family wall gallery near the bedrooms! Or in your master bedroom .....

My take on this, and YMMV of course, is that I'd take down the multiple baby photos of each child and instead have one adorable phto of them, say at one year, and a mix of photos from more recent years. We have a friend who has a million photos of her children (now in middle school)as infants all over her home. This is what she likes and it is her house, but if she asked me my opinion I'd tell her they aren't babies anymore. My kids want to see their photos up as they are now, not as infants.

Take the other photos and put them in a nice album where you can look back upon them.

My girls are 24 and 27. I have a couple of toddler/baby photos mixed in with current ones. It's a lot of fun when their friends/husbands are here and they see them when they were little and cute :-)

I think it depends on how the photos are displayed. If they are in nice frames and hung or displayed in a way that fits in with the rest of your decor, they should be fine.
