Thank you, rina, for your kind words, and correcting me! The sun in Vermont, is not more intense than in your area, unless the cloud cover differs significantly. It is very windy here. But I'vé seen many trees and plants on my farm that are simply unable, at times, to transport enough water during really hot weather. Soil compaction in my sandy loam soil (cars, tractor, pigs, chickens, human feet) stresses birches during hot, dry weather. The bronze birch borer moves in and dead birch. Potted plants are restricted, not unlike plants or trees in compacted soil. Birches in uncompacted soil will still wilt and shed leaves; rhubarb leaves wilt in the hot sun. I suspect, but only suspect, that a large potted jade, with enough foliage, on a hot, clear, sunny day with low humidity may experience the same stress, albeit with a higher threshold. Even plants like corn that love the heat, suffer from an excess. Jade leaves hold lots of water to keep the plant alive during periods of stress, but if it is not replaced quickly enough, they begin to drop off, no? There is a tipping point for every plant, with countless variables to take into account, not even accounting for genetic variation! Nomen numen, I think your advice is spot on regarding the shade cloth and moving the plant, when stressed. My problem is that it is very hard to move this plant. It must be one hundred pounds, +/-, and being a jade, it is "jiggly" and prone to tipping and breaking. That, and the fact I am forgetful and easily distracted. My jade will suffer before I get around to moving it. I may aim for a structure that breaks the wind and provides some shade, and does not look too unattractive.

A lot depends on whether you're doing it yourself, having a bunch of people help, just a few, hiring movers or what. What kind of time frame on moving makes a big difference too. My best tip EVERYTHING goes in a box, no matter how small. Too many little piles here and there that I'll just toss in and carry. I didn't mess with markers to label boxes much. I printed out a bunch of pages with each room, including basement, laundry and garage listed on it and just taped one to the box and circled the room intended. Saved a lot of time. Was a good spot to put comments when needed. Some color code things with colored dots and color code the rooms to make it easier. I found it worked great to just say the room. Make a supply box with items you'll need. Plan on using paper plates etc on moving day. Keep plastic bags handy. If you have to take legs off a table or something, all parts in a bag and tape it to the bottom of the table. Don't unpack dresser drawers, move intact. Carry out the drawers and the frame, reassemble in the truck. Do the same thing hauling it in. Plan on things getting broken and don't sweat it. If something is valuable take extra precautions. Lay out rug runners or tarps to protect floors. General comments: Have plenty of 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. Back up your computer before moving. Transport your computer YOURSELF. Clean the new place before moving in. Better yet, hire someone. If I knew more, might have some more ideas. Good luck on the move and don't let it stress you out.

Greenhaven your family is lovely! Hahaha I'm a little jealous! Except about moving 14 times in 25 years?! Are you an investor? In the military?? Or insane?! Haha this is my 4th move in 7 years so I guess I'm one for the insane column. Fingers crossed this was our last - we've finally checked all the "wants" off the list with this new place. The stuff from Nana wasn't super valuable, and we've added our own fair share of dings and chips on our own. I didn't even complain to the company - not worth the aggro. The irreplaceable stuff we carried over in our cars and on our laps. Now I just have to worry about keeping it all safe during construction - the plaster guy isn't a tidy guy. Right now we're living like squatters in our own house - barely any plumbing (one toilet, one bathroom sink) and no appliances (well, except the frat boy dorm fridge). I am getting SO tired of eating pizza!

Your plants made it through the winter most fabulously! They look like they are in a protected spot. I moved most of my Echinopsis hybrids outside today. Kind of a warm winter so some of the hybrids with more Lobivia in them were trying to grow. (Ugly etoiliation!!!!) But none of them showed spider mite damage yet so that's a plus.
