Hands up if you ever stepped on a rake

I do it every summer. Religiously. It's right up there with those steel beams holding the house up in the crawl space - I swear I'm gonna get a proper hard hat for the number of times I bean myself in the head...surprised I don't have brain damage.

This summer my goal is to put the rake up against the wall and not leave it laying around my garden when raking out new beds....

Anyone want to wager on how long it takes this summer? Twang! And man, it hurts sometimes, even more than my pride!

LOL! No but I've tripped and/or twisted my ankle and fallen while mowing the lawn, several times. I'm a natural born klutz. Good thing they started making mowers with the release saftey handles on them...too bad I never seem to let go of them when I fall, and end up letting go after I'm on the ground and realize I probably should let go!

I'm bad about getting tools out, laying them down and forgetting about them. Pretty dangerous!

"It's a shame that pumpkins, tomatoes, eggplants, etc don't grow as weedy as this...." Obviously, you've never grown currant tomatoes. ;-) They were my worst weed one year. Dill is a good "weed" to have, since it attracts beneficial insect predators when in bloom. I had it wild in a previous garden location, and am planning to introduce it into one of my current garden plots... where it will join cleome, martynia, litchi tomato, and flowering mallow as annual volunteers. Ground cherries also make good volunteers. The mallow ("Zebrina") began when I tossed several seed-laden mature plants throughout the garden, and tilled them under. There are hundreds of seedlings every year, I let them grow wherever something died or didn't come up. The bees really love the stuff, and wasps love the cleome. When I lived in SoCal, I had a winter garden. It consisted of red and green mustards, bok choi, green and purple kohlrabi, Bibb & several kinds of leaf lettuce, and Napa cabbage. I mixed all the seed together, tossed it all over a wide bed that had just been tilled, and raked the soil to cover it. It was beautiful, edible chaos right up until warm weather returned.

S.O., I use traps that look like . They are very durable in the garden, some of mine are over 10 years old. All I need to do - other than bait them - is to clean the mud out of the mechanism if it starts to bind up. The only part that ever breaks is the plastic release tab... and sometimes the traps get bent (or go missing) if a predator finds the mouse before I do. The alligator-style traps that I tried never caught anything. The small traps that I use are not really strong enough to to hold a ground squirrel; if caught, they usually pull free (leaving a little fur behind). There are larger versions meant for rats (I have about a dozen of those) which will kill ground squirrels. The ground squirrels can be just as destructive as voles, if you grow anything for dry seed... a pair of ground squirrels "harvested" nearly all of my pea seed one year, before I caught them. The only reason that they might drive voles away is that they compete for the same habitat & food supply. If you caught more field mice than voles, either that was a reflection of your rodent population, or the bait you used was more attractive to mice. In my home gardens, I caught a lot of field mice early in the season, but by late summer, all I was catching was voles.The vole population always seems to explode when the late tomatoes begin to ripen. In my rural garden, I had a period this year where I was catching toads - about 5-6 of them. (!!!) Not something I wanted to catch, obviously... can't figure out what might have attracted them to the traps, since that never happened before.

I've also mulched my veggie garden, spread some compost, and planted about 40 zoysia plugs and sod pieces. I've also seeded a cool-season mixture in one area of my yard, and removed a *ton* of weeds *by hand* wherever I found them. I read and do, not just read my friend. You, apparently, don't read, though, because that thread I mentioned is easily found in this forum. Maybe the diffence between you and me is I read first before I do something, so I get it right. Now let's be nice :-) Let's go mellow on the testosterone :-) Your pugilistic reply garnered one in return :-)

People often feel there are only two possible options when feeling strongly-- fight or flight-- as if there were no other possibility. That is a very limiting and limited position and ignores other possible responses which are probably safer and more effective for everyone involved. The point is, when feeling angry or otherwise 'wronged' or like some situation calls for some form of intervention; there are other options than ones which 'require' belitting, or otherwise causing harm to another human being. This is especially the case if there are children around who will see that kind of role modelling action between the adults. stepping in, only to enact strategies that would be employed by a 'bigger, badder, more abusive, abusive adult' is probably not a good idea for a lot of reasons not the least of which is that it's illegal and can have grave unintended and unanticipated consequences P.S. The problem of whether to step in and how to step in is fluid. Different situations are different by definition. Personally, I don't get to see many situations that appear out of hand-- physically, or verbally for that matter. When I have, a simple look or on occasion if the adult seems poised for untoward action (and also very stressed) addressing them personally and listening tends to work as a great defuser for them and they act and seem much less tense after even a little such basic human kindness. The perpetual unknown, as always is whether and/or how the adult in question may be armed, or unbalanced (mentally, emotionally, always, just now when under some extreme personal stress?).

Never a rake but a pitchfork left in the silo. Went right through my PF Flyer. OUCH!!
Peg when you lay that rake down lay it with the tines down. It might help.

I've never been bonked by a rake, but do misplace tools when doing a big job and have lots of then out. I have thought of painting all the handles orange, or white, or something similar so I can better spot them.

Yep, whacked myself in the head with the rake, I stepped backwards onto it, and just the other day, I leaned into the tool shed to get the potato fork and stepped on the hoe and got smacked. I also wear a baseball style cap that limits what I see above me and am forever walking into limbs on the trees in the orchard trying to shortcut to the garden! Now THAT will make you see stars. I'm with you, I should wear a hard hat. Gardening is dangerous.

Last summer I stumbled over a short board that had been lying in the garden, and I had been walking around it (!), for ages. I fell flat on my face, and just lay there, thinking "What did I break? my nose? my jaw? my glasses?" Well, none of those, but bent the glasses, had a black eye, and sore nose. Oh, yes, I have since picked up the board.
