Now I need to learn about Gardz

I am mentally up to the task of applying Gardz to my walls since I have figured out, with much help from posters, how to remove my wallpaper & its glue + backing. I suppose I need to skimcoat it before applying Gardz? The walls are pretty well uneven in various places.

Apply the Gardz first, skim, sand, clean, apply Gardz again, paint.

Zinsser has tech sheets available at their website.

GARDZ is best applied with a 1/2" nap roller cover. A light coat is best. Apply before repairs and after repairs are dry and sanded smooth.

Everyone's going to have their own preference. I was a carpenter for years and have found that a plain Stanley Utility Knife with replaceable/retractable blades is the easiest for me to use. The blades are thin, stiff, and razor sharp, and a 100-pack of extra blades is cheap. The large body is easy to hold onto, and the bright green color is hard to lose. When I first started grafting I bought a whole host of grafting knives, from folding-blade ones to the Tina budding knives to the Omega cutter. They now all sit in the toolbox while the Stanley gets used all season. Depending on the Omega tool will severely limit the type of grafts you will be able to do, as the stock sizes have to be just right. Learn to master the cleft graft, the whip graft (tongue is optional), and the bud graft, and you will be able to handle just about any situation that comes along. Applenut

Cjc45, I had also thought that about the multicolored ones, that the birds carry the seeds and plant them in the wild, but this nursery says these new brightly colored ones are not invasive, and it sounds like others here agree? June, those are almost too perfect! They sure are pretty, and so bright. Those are the color combos this nursery has, but the plants don't look as full or perfect. Olya, I think I may need to try some. My problem is not too much full sun. Ladywingr, I'm also interested in how others are growing them, and is this a bad time to plant them? Will they wither in winter in 9b/10a? Should I just wait till spring? Anna

Gardz is a product that acts somewhat like a plastic version of shellac. It is milky-white in the can, dries clear, is the consistency of water and will penetrate to some extent. While you can paint over it, I prefer to use a latex primer over the Gardz as it gives the paint color coat an even base color to cover. As an example, I recently did a bathroom that was reconstructed with Purple wallboard. The drywall compound was white and the contrast and surface absorption differences between the drywall face material and the compound would have been noticeable if I did not put Gardz on the walls first; and then a white latex primer to give the final color coat an even, one-color surface to cover.

Michael - I read the tech sheets at their website but I am still uncertain. (confused) When you say apply before repairs and after repairs are dry, what do you mean? (before repairs?) Here's the situation: I pulled off as much of the backing and paste behind the wallpaper as I could. There are some nicks on the drywall, also plaster. (Will it go over plaster?) Can I refrain from filling in the nicks? (not gouges, they are little nicks) Also, there are some larger sections of backing paper next to stripped sections. The Gardz website led me to believe that I don't need to strip all the paper backing, that I can leave it as is if I care to. Do I understand this correctly? thanks for your support.

GARDZ the damaged areas prior to spackling or skim coating. That prevents bubbled backing paper (the brown stuff) on drywall. Make your repair. Sand the repair. GARDZ the repair. Prime if making considerable color changes and paint.

OK, got it, I think I finally understand. Thanks y'all! I even spoke to the rep at Zinsser today and he tried explaining it patiently to me, I still had questions and y'all really helped me to finally, at long last, get it! (this is not to say that I won't have any further questions...but thanks for your help!)
