Hi Toomuchglass, Often when a male dog urintes indoors at someone else's home or his own he is trying to stake territory. This is not a house breaking issue, it is a territorial behavior issue. Let us assume he does not do this at his own home. Where does he stand in the pecking order with the other male dog? And even your female? If he is the beta, he might be trying to let your female know she is below him in the pecking order. If he is the Alpha male he is trying to let your female know that he is top dog. Keep in mind he does not know if he is here permanetly or just visiting. In his mind the pack is unstable. There is a new memeber and he wants her to know where he stands. In a wolf pack, the alpha wolf will usually be the dog that marks territory. No other wolf would have the gumption to do this unless they are going to challenge him. They know where they need to eliminate and they do this with respect. This dog does not know who is in charge and may feel he needs to be. From his perspective he is thinking... Who is top dog? Who is the boss? Where do I fit in? I don't want to loose. So lifting to mark an area is his way of saying I am part of this space. He may be setting boundaries to prevent a fight. He may not be a fighting guy but wants everyone to know this is his space. Some ideas that might help are having a crate in your home for him to enter as soon as he arrives. After 1/2 hr let him out of the crate but watch him closely as though he were a tiny puppy. Keep him on a leash attached to his owner or even you. Do not let him out of your site and if he lifts a leg. Be ready to train! As soon as he lifts a leg, shake a can with coin in it. Scream loudly. NO! And rush him outside to do his duty. If you can even mop up his pee with a paper towel and leave it outside where he can smell where he needs to go. Be loving, firm and consistent. He needs to be taught in a loving way that he is not the alpha of the space. That someone else is in charge. He needs to earn your trust which means he either needs to be closely leashed to his owner or you and slowly when he can be trusted not to lift his leg he can roam free. Never reprimand a dog for marking if you do not catch him in the act. This will only confuse him. I hope this helps. ~boxerpups

LOL!!! i had this same problem when we lived in a townhouse. tiny yard, stupid neighbor, 2 big labs. but our problem was a *little* worse. we had a grass yard but the neighbor had his whole back yard decked. he rarely, and i mean RARELY ever cleaned up dog poop. and the dogs' pee would seep through the cracks of the deck so there was no way to clean it up. it was the worse smell you can imagine. my son was a toddler but we could not use our back yard for anything because of the horrid smell. as if that wasn't enough, this guy was gone for days at a time. one of the dogs would get on top of the dog house and jump the fence so the other dog would bark incessantly ALL DAY LONG. i finally got to the point where i walked around and opened the gate to let the other dog out. this place was out in the country, surrounded by woods, so the dogs never went far. it was a last resort because the noise was so overbearing! i finally had a belly full of the smell and ended up calling the health department who gave him several warnings. he finally sold the place and moved. we celebrated!!!

Here goes - first thing in the morning, you should be taking both dogs for AT LEAST A 15 minute walk. If you are home all day, another 15 minute walk in the afternoon and another walk then again before dinner and again right before you go to bed. My dogs have been trained with positive reinforcement, when I take them out I do not have an agenda. When they pp I give them the command to pp, when they are just about finished, I praise them. I take my pets out to different places as much as possible. No matter the weather we stay out until everyone is empty. It takes about 2 weeks to train dogs to go number one and number two on command. If I am in need of meeting an appointment, I can take the dogs outside, tell them to pp outside or make a meadow muffin or touchdown and I can put them back in the car for a later walk which I will do as soon as possible. I change up their routine, taking them to a local park, dog park, open space area, fire road or beach, does not matter as long as they get new smells and a new place to explore. I have had dogs in my life since birth and have never had an accident in the house after the 2 weeks have gone by and my dogs all come with issues. Walking your dogs often and for at least 15 to 30 minutes costs nothing, keeps you and your dogs healthier and keeps you aware of things going on in your neighborhood...a win win win situation. Call your vet and explain what's happening. It does sound like this is involuntary and she's 'leaking.' He may recommend Proin (meds you will give at home) which will improve the tone of the spincter muscle. Many female dogs have this problem. You do not have to 'grin and bear it', it's very likely treatable. Discard the sofa cushion foam inserts and get new ones. An upholstery company can probably cut these to size.
