Advice needed: re dogs peeing in your yard

I've terrible neighbors. They come from different blocks away but why or why do they need to have their dogs pee in my yard. There are perfectly good boulevards and yet they have their dogs do their business in my yard. I've plants that were burned off because of the pee. Just earlier today, I yelled at 2 girls who were letting their dogs use my next door neighbor's carefully groomed lawn as a urinal. I hate doing that.

Need some advise.. Are there products out there I can use? Signs are not effective and may cause more trouble I fear.

A functional but ornamental fence might work, something like a picket fence. We found a spray derived from natural materials that smelled like oranges to me but kept our cat away from areas where we didn't want her. I noticed at the time that there was a similar spray for dogs, but it was several years ago and I have no memory of where we found it.

Where I am picket fences are not used and so instead i have a nice hedge with some plants growing beneath it. It's these plants that are being peed on and now have died.

I will continue to search for products to deter dogs.

Sue once we had a good look at things with the landscapers it was pointed out to us that they could build the soil up to the boundary with the neighbors because our neighbors side was a few feet higher than the lowest dipÃ¢ÂÂ¦.the dip show in the pic is not in the middle but maybe two thirds in towards the neighbors sideÃ¢ÂÂ¦this was hard to know when I posted this because of the overgrown rhododendrons partly hiding that side - we did not need a retaining wall because the landscapers built up the neighbors side slightly more then filled in the dip with probably 4 truckloads of loamÃ¢ÂÂ¦.they also built up the front of the property on the right to even it out - built it up by about 2 feet which made a big difference and meant that a retaining wall was not required where the ugly green bush is in front of the house on the right sideÃ¢ÂÂ¦hard to see that in the before photo because the bush was hiding the detail - we initially thought we would need a retaining wall but once the bushes were removed we could see that we could fill in that area (in retrospect I wish I had taken many more 'before' and 'during' shots but once the excavator moved in they worked fast)Ã¢ÂÂ¦the yard is not completely flat - it slopes down slightly away from the house for drainage etc Ã¢ÂÂ¦our basement is extremely dry My advice is to get a few different people in and ask if they can 're-grade' your yard to make it more usableÃ¢ÂÂ¦ I had no idea about this until I had landscapers out for quotes (mainly about re-doing the front path initially) and they all suggested the same thing for the side of the house - removing trees etc and putting in sod after made a huge difference and to be honest things turned out way better than I had expected PS The driveway next door was dug out so there is a wall there holding up their side of the garden along the boundary

Maybe I misunderstood, you just remodeled your kitchen and when you move the house is going to be torn down??? My goodness that's going to be hard to watch. I'm guessing here... based on your description and some photos in your album, I'm predicting your front yard is bermudagrass, a very maintenance intensive grass that is very much out of it's ideal planting range in your area. The back yard is probably tall fescue which, in your climate, can also be a struggle. The maintenance calendars for the two grasses are about opposite and one generally looks good while the other is dormant from either heat or cold. The bottom line is you are probably due for an overseed in the back yard for tall fescue. As for aerating, I personally think going to HD, filling out forms and stressing out over getting the job done and the thing returned in 4 hours is stressful and a pain. After dinner I go out there and spend 10-15 mins with the turf hound and in 4 days I'm done. My yard is small though, only about 80x125 give or take. But this is something you'll have to try for yourself and decide. You can keep a lot of vegetation off your hill by using pre-emergents for most common weeds that spreads by seed. That's another thing I find to be a pain in the butt because it involves a long drive in the middle of the work day to get it at a special lawn company supply house. So behind my fence I just manually remove weeds by hand and post-emergents such as roundup. In the next few weeks is the optimal time in your area to overseed tall fescue grass. You may solicit opinions for special varieties that you can order by phone and ship in from OR/WA or somewhere like that, in this forum in another thread or you can do what most everyone who isn't a lawn geek does and go to bigboxmart and get a bigbag of grass seed that for the most part will be fine. Maintenance and good cultural practices KEEPS IT ALIVE.

If you have a sunny spot anywhere in the yard, the pee gees will like that. Once they are mature and flowering, they can bloom under an open canopy of less sun (alot in my neighborhood that are like that). The others might like the NE side if they can get a little more sun. It is often difficult to grow under the shade of a large maple. The 2nd house that we lived in as I was growing up has a neighboring house that had a maple tree like that (and its many babies that were large themselves) and it was a challenge. Those trees were finally removed last week and OMG what a difference. My mother now has a sunny yard for the first time in almost 40 years that she has lived there.

Janetaz, you might also find these handy. We had them around for my father-in-law, who was bed-bound, and they looked like just what we needed for certain of our dogs who had problems with peeing inside, too. I ended up buying a whole set just for the dogs. The front-loader washer we have sanitizes them well and we can save money in the long run, compared to buying the paper ones that want to blow all over in the slightest breeze. Toby is our older boy, at 13, he started peeing in the bathroom recently, so we always keep a pad in there. Casey has a brain tumor and sometimes has problems with needing to pee while we are a away, too. I was home from work sick for a few weeks. I returned last Monday and came home to find pee in two places. So we put the pads down. No one peed again this week, but at least we had the areas covered! I feel for you, as I've had the same problem in the past. I thought of a motion controlled sprinkler, but didn't want to soak the guys who pick up trash or the newspaper deliverer. I tried to think of a cute but pointed sign, but DH thought that was an awful idea. There are items that detect motion and then emit a loud noise and a burst of air, but I think that would get stolen. I used to use Lemon Pledge in the house to train the dogs to stay away from certain areas...not sure how that would translate to outside, but there are products that you spray where you don't want dogs to go. I never got around to actually using any of these products...I just gave up planting in those areas.

You'd think people young or old would be more considerate when walking their dogs, some are and they are to be comended but not very many. We live right across the road from a lovely little nature park. We have a bylaw that all dogs must be on a leash, you must pick up after your dog and certain breeds must wear muzzles HA!!!

For starters, we have a woman that drives down to the entrance of the park, walks her dog back up the side of the road to do it's business, no problem, she bags it, no problem. Then.... she flings it in the bushes rather than walking back to her car only a few feet away where she could deposit her baggie in the garbage can provided for such things. Hubby went out finally and had a few words with her, didn't work, she still does the same ol, same ol and has told people my DH is just a mean old man LOL.

Ianna, hopefully you can find a product that will work, these kind of people will never change, but I'd bet my bottom dollar if someone was continually walking by their homes and defiling their property they'd be singing a different tune.

Annette, it frustrates me to know that we have all forms of products to deter say cats from the yards.. and yet dogs are another issue. I wish there was something that can be triggered to prevent dogs from peeing there. I'll continue my quest.

How about planting cactus or something really nasty and spiky right at the edge of your yard? Jumping Cholla could put an end to it.
