Outdoor painting -- deck.

I'm about to tackle my first outdoor painting project--our deck. It's already white (except "floor"), so I want to stick with that. I only know that what was originally put on it is oil-based. So, question is this--what's the best product to use on it?

I like to shop at Sherwin-Williams (used their products in my basement project last winter) or Lowes or Ace for paint products......(but am open to whatever).

Is just a light sanding to get off already flaking paint (and dirt, etc.) the only prep I need?

The best exterior oil paint for decks is Sikkens Rubbol Dek. It's self priming so you just do 2 coats of it after you scrape and sand the loose paint off.

Seriously,
Rubbol DEK is a VERY GOOD solid-stain. As PG says, good prep is crucial.

IDEALLY, a deck needs to be cleaned AND sanded. If you only "spot-sand", the dirtier areas won't hold stain as goodas the sanded areas. This leads to a blotchier look.

I have a set of teak patio furniture that I want to paint vs. stain. I used Duration on my deck railings and it looks fantastic, even in a beach area. I was thinking of using Duration for the wood furniture, since I think it will hold up very well. What do you recommend for both primer and paint. Thanks!

You still need to sand a bit, so that it gives the new paint something to adhere too. Please post a picture. Are you sure its paint? It could be a solid color stain, which would be more common for a deck, than paint.

Oh boy, sounds like a fun project :-) Hubby isn't the type of guy who likes "proper prep work"--he'd rather just slap it on and then re-do it a lot. So, knowing that, it's why I'M going to do it.

So, where do I buy this Sikkens product? I don't recall seeing it in any stores, and I'm about to head out for some materials.

Okay, so power wash, let dry, then sand, and paint? It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so if I get my powerwashing done today, then I'll wait til it's dried after the rainfall for the sanding....

I buy it from my local Mom and Pop paint store, but around me it looks like Ace carries it too, and also some lumber yards.

!!!NOTE OF CAUTION!!!

When pressure-washing...KEEP THAT TIP 1 FOOT AWAY from deck, & dial pressure down to ~ 500psi!!!
* You'll gouge/crush woodgrain if it's too close.
* You can easily ruin a deck if that tip gets within 6" & full pressure!
* Only a few ACE retailers have it. It's not in ACE'S warehousing system, so dealers have to order it direct from Sikkens if they wanna carry it.

Thanks for the deck washing warning. I didn't get to it yesterday--the front of my house took longer than anticipated. Maybe later today/tomorrow. Guess I'd better get the manual out to see how to regulate pressure :-)

It's not so much regulating pressure on the power washer as it is using the right tip for the job and just staying far enough away from what you are cleaning. Some of the tips are like water bullets...use the ones that actually have a fan pattern. If you are just getting surface dirt off something you are going to repaint, you don't have to get that close.
