I need a Christmas Martini

I have the usual liquor set up with all the mixers and limes lemons etc.... I do a fancy planter size tin filled with Beers around the world...and of course your standard Budweiser and Hineken... I will have Cosmopolitans and Appletini's but I was thinking of a Christmas one,I may get rid of the Cosmo if I find a good one. I also greet with nice fluted glass's filled with Dom Perignon. Any suggestions welcome! TIA

I made pomtinis last year. The Bailey's website also has some nice drinks- I did something with Bailey's and Godiva chocolate liqueur that was really good.

This is good, and is a beautiful red color in the martini glass. It would be really pretty served in a glass that's been sugar frosted around the rim with a twist of lemon.

Well, they're not dead yet, so I suppose that's some form of success. I have 6 cuttings going, but noticed they didn't seem to be doing so well. So I un-potted them and I think I found the culprit -- the soil was too moist. Most of my lovely roots had rotted away! So I remixed the soil, added a lot more perlite for drainage, re-dipped the cuttings in rooting hormone, and drenched them in a soil drench that is supposed to stop damping off disease. So we'll see if they make it. If not, the "Mother Plant" is doing absolutely beautifully, and I feel confident that what I learn from doing this will help me to propagate her properly down the road. And, Oh Yes, one additional section fell off while I was watering the Mother Plant the other day, so it is now in gel awaiting root development. I am nothing if not persistent! MacThayer

Here are two, make-ahead brie recipes: PESTO-FILLED BRIE This is best as a make-ahead dish. 1 Baby Brie (1.1 pounds) 1 small clove garlic 1 bunch fresh basil (1 Â½ t. dried) 4 T. unsalted, softened butter Squeeze fresh lemon juice Pinch of freshly ground black pepper 1 T. pine nuts or walnuts Chopped parsley Split brie horizontally into two layers and set aside. In a blender, chop garlic finely. Add enough basil leavesÂwashed and driedÂto make about Â½ cup. Add half of the butter, lemon juice and pepper. Process until smooth. Remove and stir in nuts. Spread filling evenly onto one layer of cheese, then top with second layer, cut side down. Spread remaining butter around edge of cheese and sprinkle with parsley. To serve, cut into wedges. Make 24 hours before serving so all flavors meld. Serves 8-12. ____________________________________ BAKED BRIE WITH CARAMELIZED ONIONS 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter 8 cups sliced onions (about 4 large) 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 teaspoon sugar 1 8-inch-diameter 32- to 36-ounce French Brie, packed in wooden box (reserve box) 2 French bread baguettes, sliced Melt butter in heavy very large skillet over medium-high heat. My experience doesn't match msazadi's. I know vegetarians who are foodies. One is in my kitchen at the moment making cornbread. Two nights ago he made ravioli with a citrus sauce. For Thanksgiving, the meat eaters amongst us went to my DIL's sisters house for turkey lunch. In the evening we hosted a vegetarian Thanksgiving meal. My DS invited an fellow grad student and her room mate (both Indian and vegetarian). We wanted to make something they would like without doing Indian food. This Tunisian Chickpea Soup from Olive Trees and Honey went over well. Spicy enough to be familiar to them without attempting to be Indian. 1/4 c olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 3 carrots, chopped 1 small (~10 oz) celery root, peeled and chopped or 2 stalks celery chopped 2-4 cloves garlic minced ~ 10 c water 1 lb (2 1/3 c) dried soaked chick peas 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp cumin seeds or 1 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1 to 2 tbsp harissa or 1 tsp cayenne 1 tsp salt or 2 tsp kosher salt ground black pepper 1/2 c chopped fresh cilantro, mint or parsley 2 to 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice or 1 c plain yogurt 3 to 4 c french bread cubes or pita bread (optional) (I didn't) 3 to 4 c French bread cubes or pita bread In large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, celery, garlic and saute until softened, ~ 10 min Add water, chick peas and bay leaves. Boil, cover and reduce heat and simmer until tender, ~ 1 1/2 hours Toast cumin seeds (if using) in a dry skillet until lightly browned - shake or stir - don't burn them. Grind. Add cumin, harissa or cayenne, salt and pepper to soup. Cover and simmer 15 min. Discard bay leaves. Coarsely mash the chick pease a bit with a wood spoon, potato masher or stick blender. Can be stored in fridge and reheated for serving. Add the cilantro and lemon juice and heat through before serving. If desired, add 1/2 cup bread pieces to each bowl and ladle soup over. Drizzle with olive oil. (We were having falafal and pita bread after plus I made cranberry walnut whole wheat bread so we didn't do bread in the soup bowls. I didn't drizzle the oil and it was fine.) Moroccan variation in case you have non-spicy types - omit cumin and harissa. After mashing the chick peas, add 2 lb stemmed chopped spinach or chard or frozen spinach thawed and squeezed dry and the lemon juice, cover and simmer 2 to 4 min. Home made pita and falafel were great but not low effort. About half the falafel recipes used soaked and ground chick peas. The other half used soaked, cooked and mashed chick peas. I did a half batch each way - the ones using soaked and ground but not pre-cooked chick peas came out much better - very good flavor and texture. Sephardic Leek and Cheese Casserole also from Olive Trees and Honey - a very good book if you want to expand your vegetarian repertoire - is good and pretty easy. It reheats well so you could make it ahead. Too late for Jessy I'm afraid. 1/4 c olive oil 3 lb leeks ( 1 1/2 lb if you do the zucchini varient), white and light green parts only cut into thin lengthwise slices and washed 1 large onion chopped (optional - I've always used it) 1 c water 2 cups (~1 lb) grated zucchini 2 tsp salt or 4 tsp kosher salt 1 cup (5 oz) crumbled feta or 1 c (8 oz) farmer or pot or 1 c grated kefalotyri or Parmesan cheese or a combination (I've always done the feta) 1 c shreded kashkaval, Goueda, Muenster or Cheddar (did this the first time and thought it didn't add much - other times I've done just the feta) 5 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 tbsp olive oil ground black pepper to taste or 1/2 tsp cayenne 1/4 c chopped fresh dill or 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg (optional) Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and oil a 9 " square or 8 by 11 inch baking dish or two 9-inch pie plates. In a large sauce pan (she must have really large sauce pans - I use a small soup pot), heat oil over medium heat. Saute leeks and onion until softened. Add water, zucchini if using, 1 1/2 tsp salt or 3 tsp kosher salt, cover and simmer until leeks are tender (about 15 min). Drain Combine cheeses, eggs, remaining salt, pepper and dill or nutmeg. Add leek mixture. Put in baking dish. Bake until set and golden brown, about 50 minutes. Variant - you can leave out the cheese msazadi and cook 2 lb peeled, diced russet potatoes with the leeks. Kind of mash it after the draining step. I usually still put in the feta or you can put in 1/2 c Parmesan cheese. Really fancy and a good side dish for the meat eaters would be a nice Biryani. I have made one with cashews and pistachios in the top layer of rice but it was more work. There are some simpler ones on line.

lol, I ignored MIL's friend request. NO WAY!!! But, I was already FB friends with BIL & SIL because they have been on FB since I opened my account, MIL just opened hers. I'd hate to delete it because ONE person wants to write nasty things to me. I know this doesn't sound nasty to most people but the ONLY time she posts anything is to "confront" me about SD. When DH took SD shopping for school clothes (because I refused to take her), I commented something to him like "good luck shopping with a teen girl..lol" and SIL went off on me... even her son who's 15 had something to say.. as if I was writing nasty mean things about SD. Later on, they both said they felt they needed to "protect" SD and defend her. Um, mothers of teen girls write stuff like that all the time.. or worse. I am about to unfriend her. I just don't get why she doesn't unfriend me... obviously she doesn't like me & has nothing nice to say to me. I don't 'not like' her, I don't know her. I have felt sorry for her because of the way MIL talks about her... I know she took the brunt before I came along. It's more about THAT than it being posted on FB. I'm beginning to dread Christmas, which is probably what they want... so I don't go. I may just give them what they want & let DH go alone. My DIL expressed an interest in seeing DGS that day so I may offer to drive him so I have a good reason to not go with DH... I don't really feel I need a reason at all but at least DH can explain to his mom that I had to go instead of it looking like I just don't want to go see them... lol, which I really don't. Grrrr! It does make me angry that I am willing to suck it up & be nice for DH's sake. I ordered personalized gifts for them & was going to go & be gracious/cordial but now I don't know if I could muster a fake smile for that group. I'm pretty sure DH would understand if I don't want to go but they would give him a hard time... and I don't see him standing up to them. He might, but I doubt it. He wants everyone to just get along.

My Dh loves pomtini's. I make them with pomagranite juice(100%) and good vodka. Then i make my own red sugar for the rim of the glass. Very simple and very good!

During our recent "Martini Mayhem" weekend - we downed a couple of these babies - Alexa was the bartender and she may have played around with the ingredients a bit (something tells me she might have increased the vodka :) but this was the original recipe.

POMEGRANATE MARTINI

Serves 2

1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
2 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Cointreau liquor (or any orange liquor)
Cup of ice
Squeeze of lemon

Shake ingredients in a shaker and put in chilled martini glasses. Put pomegranate fruit (seeds) into glass as garnish.

If I may suggest my all time favorite cactus pear margarita? It looks spectacular in a glass, all deep crimson. Garnish the side of the glass with a slice of star fruit.

You need cactus pear juice (or some cactus pears peeled, chopped, seeded & pureed), lime juice, sugar & tequila to taste. you can shake with ice or blend with ice ala frozen margarita.

You know, I'll bet that you could do the same with pomegranite but the cactus pear color is so, so gorgeous.

Lemon Burst Martini

Jeff Sansome, the bartender at Canoe in Toronto, one of Canada's top restaurants, inspired this martini. Limoncello is a lemon liqueur from Italy. Make a pitcher ahead of time so it is ready for guests when they arrive. A delicious non-alcoholic version can be made with three parts lemonade, one part cranberry juice and a dash of grenadine.

Makes 8 martinis

1 cup vodka
1/2 cup Limoncello
2 cups lemonade
1 cup raspberries
1 cup blueberries or blackberries
2 star fruit, cut into 1/2-inch slices

Place vodka, Limoncello and lemonade in a pitcher and chill in the refrigerator.

To serve, place a few berries and a slice of star fruit in each martini glass and pour in a scant 1/2 cup martini mixture. (You can also put a small cut into each slice of star fruit and hang it over the edge of each glass.)

Creamsicle Martini

From Bonnie Stern - Fara Rupert brought this special martini to my attention. It tastes like one of my favourite childhood ice cream bars. The orange juice makes it perfect for brunch. Prepare ahead of time in a pitcher and chill. Add the ice just before serving to chill it further. Serve with or without the ice.

Makes 6 to 8 martinis

1 cup vanilla vodka
1/2 cup vanilla schnapps
2 cups orange juice (freshly squeezed, preferably)
1 cup ice

In a pitcher, combine vodka, schnapps and orange juice. Stir well. Refrigerate until ready to pour. Add ice and stir for one minute.

Mango Martini

From Bonnie Stern - Here's a wonderful martini idea I brought back from Mexico. If you want to make it into a smoothie, omit the alcohol (Malibu and liqueur) and use orange juice instead.

Makes 3 martinis

1 ripe mango
1/2 cup Malibu rum
2 Tbsp mango or orange liqueur
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 cup ice cubes

Peel mango and dice flesh. You should have about 2 cups. Puree in a blender.

Blend in rum, liqueur and lemon juice.

Add ice and blend until completely crushed. Pour into 3 martini glasses.

Oprah's Legends Lemon Drop Martini

Oprah loves martinis and this is one of her favourites! She served it at the Legends Ball.

The juice of 6 lemons
4 Tbsp sugar
6 fresh mint leaves
4 shots of vodka
Ice in shaker
A sugar-rimmed martini glass

Mix lemon juice, sugar and vodka in a martini shaker filled with ice. Shake well and pour into sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with mint. Serves 2.

Pomegranate Daiquiris

Leave winter doldrums at the door by greeting guests with glasses of bright pomegranate daiquiris.

3 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
1 1/2 cups plain or raspberry-flavored light rum
1 cup cassis or cranberry liqueur
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
Ice cubes
Pomegranate seeds, frozen green grapes, or kiwi slices, for garnish

Combine pomegranate juice, rum, cassis and lime juice in a large pitcher. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 4 hours or up to 1 week ahead.

In a blender, combine 1 1/2 cups juice mixture and 1 cup ice cubes. Blend until slushy. Pour into large martini or wine glasses; garnish as desired. Repeat with remaining juice. (From Oprah magazine)

Here's a couple of drink recipes, first one isn't a martini but it looks good.

Cranberry Mojito
INGREDIENTS
1 bunch fresh mint, trimmed (about 1 cup)
1/2 cup sugear
1 3/4 cups light rum
1 1/4 cups fresh lime juice
3/4 cup frozen cranberry juice cocktail concentrate, thawed
2 10-ounce bottles sparkling water, chilled

PREPARATION
Using a wooden spoon, mash mint with sugar in bottom of large pitcher.
Add rum and lime juice; stir to dissolve sugar.
Mix in thawed cranberry juice concentrate and water. Mix in 6 cups ice.

Serves 6.

Holiday Pomtini

Ingredients:

3/4 oz. freshly squeezed pomegranate juice* or

POM WonderfulÂ® 100% Pomegranate Juice

1 oz. StoliÂ® Orange

3/4 oz. DeKuyperÂ® Original Peachtree SchnappsÂ®

1 oz. fresh orange juice
1/4 oz. lemon juice
Equal parts ground cinnamon and granulated
sugar for garnish spiraled orange
rind for garnish

Directions:
1. Shake all drink ingredients with ice to chill.
  2. Serve in a martini glass prepared as follows:
  1. Mix in a bowl, one part ground cinnamon and one
  part granulated sugar.
  2. Moisten the rim of a martini glass by swiping a
  slice of orange around the rim.
  3. Dust glass rim with the sugared cinnamon mixture
  and decorate with a spiral of orange
* This cocktail can be made with freshly squeezed
juice from a POM Wonderful pomegranate or by using POM
Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice. To juice the
pomegranate, cut it in half (as you would a
grapefruit) and juice using a citrus reamer or a
juicer. Pour mixture through a cheesecloth-lined
strainer or sieve. One large POM Wonderful pomegranate
will produce about 1/2 cup of juice.

Mistletoe Martini
4 parts vodka
1/2 oz midori
splash of grenadine

mix vodka & midori in shaker with ice
strain into matini glass, add splash of gredine
grenadine will sink to bottom giving you a festively colored holiday drink

I don't drink anymore, but a local restaurant used to serve "Poinsettias" around Christmas. I can't remember what was in them, but when I did a search for "Poinsettia drink" there were lots of hits. Check it out. It can use champagne also (plus grand marnier, cranberry juice and others).

Holly Berry Martini

Raspberry juice

Fill a shaker with ice. Add 1 1/2 ounces of Plymouth Gin, and the juice of 1/8 fresh lemon. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass. Top with raspberry juice and garnish with fresh raspberries.

Option: Try a raspberry liqueur in place of the raspberry juice.

ROFL - you know me way too well! Yea, I did increase the vodka, was that why you were curious that they were a light blush pink instead of red? LOLOLOL

Anyway...

I might do one of the following

Chocolate-Mint Martini
1 oz vodka
1/2 oz white creme de menthe
1/2 oz white creme de cacao

Pour ingredients into shaker filled with ice, then pour into chilled martini glass. Garnish with chocolate stick and mint sprig.

Another of my favorites is to chill a large shot of Tanqueray and add a bit of cranberry juice to taste. Garnish with a lime slice. It has a wonderful pine-y scent and screams Christmas with the red drink and green garnish.

I think ill try the Pomtini....is that sweetened juice or unsweeted???? I found that the sugar sticks better to the glass when using HONEY instead of Lemon juice or water.

If you are preparing sugared glasses ahead...dip the rime in slightly whipped egg white and then in sugar....and let it dry.

I have a few Holiday-specific Martini recipes in my collection:

Candy Cane Martini
1 ½ oz vodka
1 tsp peppermint schnapps
1 oz club soda mini
candy cane for garnish

Pour vodka, peppermint schnapps, and club soda over a handful of ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake until cold, then pour into a chilled martini glass. Hand mini candy cane over lip of glass.

Mint Martini
1 part vodka
1 part godiva white chocolate liqueur
1 splash of creme de menthe

Shake and strain into a well chilled martini glass. Garnish with a mint leaf

Angel Martini
3 parts vodka
1 part Frangelico Hazelnut Liquor

Shake and strain into a wet chilled martini glass.

Misteltoe Martini
4 parts vodka
½ oz. Melon liquor such as Midori
splash of grenadine

Mix vodka and melon liquier in martini shaker. Strain into martini glass. Add grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom of the glass making the drink red and green.

Frostini
1 part vodka
1 part godiva liqueur
1 part baileys irish cream liqueur
splash of cream
garnish: 1 hersheys hug candy

Shake all ingredients except garnish over ice and strain into a chilled martini glass rimmed with sugar. Garnish with the candy kiss

Reindeer Martini
2 parts vodka
1 part Frangelico
1 part Malibu
splash of cream

Shake over ice and strain to serve straight up in a martini glass, garnished with a cherry and 2 cinnamon sticks for antlers.

Gingerbread Martini I
Ingredients:
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, coarsely chopped
2 sticks of Cinnamon
3 cloves

Preparation: Simmer water, sugar, ginger, cloves and
cinnamon stirring occasionally, until reduced to about 3/4
cup, about 15 minutes.
Pour hot syrup through a fine sieve and chill.
Let stand 20 minutes.

Ice
2 ounces vodka
1/2 to 1 ounce gingerbread syrup, recipe above

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka and
gingerbread syrup, shake vigorously, andstrain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add twist of lemon or lime and serve.

Gingerbread Martini II
1 oz. gingerbread syrup
1 1/2 oz. Vanilla vodka
3/4 oz. Baileys
splash dark crème de cacao

Shake it up and pour....or if you really want to get fancy....rim glass with:

Gingerbread Martini Icing
2 c. apple cider
2 cinnamon sticks
1/4 c. Maker's Mark bourbon
2 tbsp. Grand Marnier
1/2 c. heavy cream
2 oz. butter

Combine the cider and the sticks in saucepan over high heat, reduce by half. Add remaining ingredients over low heat until thickened. Cool completely. Place mixture on plate and rim glass.

Poinsettia
Champagne
1/4 oz. Triple Sec
Splash of Cranberry Juice

Combine in Champagne glass, Garnish with a twist

Poinsettia Martini
1-1/2 oz. Absolut Vodka
1/4 oz. Chambord
1/4 oz. Pineapple Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.

I have made the Pomtinis....very good.

Here is the Poinsettia resipe I use

Poinsettia

1/4 c lemon flavored vodka
1/2 c cranberry juice
Splash of champagne

In a cocktail shaker filled with ise, combine vodka & cranberry juice. Cover and shake vigorously. Strain into cocktail lass and top with a generous splash of champagne.

This one is to die for!

Karra's Cocktail
1 part Raspberry Vodka
1 part Cranberry juice
1 part Chambord
Top with Champagne
Rim glass in citrus sugar

And finally , Oprah's favorite.....of course it is....

Oprah's Pomegranate Martini
Serves 2

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
2 oz. Absolute Citron vodka OR white tequila
1 oz. Cointreau liquor
Cup of ice
Optional: Splash of sparkling water
Optional: Squeeze of lemon

Shake ingredients in a shaker and put in chilled martini glasses. Put pomegranate fruit into glass as garnish.

Question Everyone...Can you make martinies in large quantities or is it better to have everyone make their own. I am having a holiday cocktail party named 'Tini Holiday Cocktail Party...where i was thinking of having martini bar, wine, beer, and champagne. Serve massive appetizers, a potato martini bar, and lots of tiny desserts & cookies. But I wasn't sure that martini's can be made in batches.

I made a candy cane martini last year that my DH's Aunt really liked them but not so much after about 6 of them.

1 1/2 oz of vanilla vodka
1 1/2 oz of white chocolate liquor
3/4 oz of peppermint schnapps

You are then supposed to take red icing and swirl is around the glass before pouring the martini in. I did not do this and I also found that a little less of the schnapps was better.

Flamingo, you can do up a big batch in a pitcher or something and have folks just shake over ice and pour into a glass...

Something else I've done that works really well (but isn't at all fancy) is to pre-mix the drinks, pour them into 4-oz jelly jars, lid them and bury them in a tub of crushed ice a couple hours before the party. The idea is that rather than guests spilling all over your kitchen or you being chained to the shaker all night, guests can fish out a drink (color coded for clarity), put the lid on a tray next to the ice bucket, and pour into a fancy glass... though most guests prefer to drink right out of the jelly jars! If it's a drink that requires a bit of carbonated beverage, I leave that out, use a larger jar, and leave room in the jar for the guests to top it off when they serve themselves.

I did the jelly jar once on a lark, and now get requests for them when I ask what I can bring. Initially, I was embarrassed because they aren't very posh, but they are practical and efficient, and I fill them with very good ingredients...

You know, I've opened this thread a couple of times now, wondering just what it is about Christmas that has you so stressed, that you need a martini already, Eileen...

Key Lime Martini

The name says 'summer', the color says Christmas, the taste is amazing.

Our liquor store special orders the liqueur for us in the cool months, otherwise it's usually stocked.

3 parts vodka (Stoli Vanilla)
2 Ke Ke Beach Key Lime Liqueur
1 pineapple juice
1 heavy cream of Half & Half

I just copied this Apple Martini recipe from the food network allstar dessert special tonight. It just sounded so refreshing to me even though I am a vodka martini up with the twist person....no foofoo martinis in this house!

Apple Martini

Recipe courtesy Michael Chiarello

1 part vodka
1 part sour apple Schnapps
1 part apple juice
Sour apple hard candy, for garnish (recommended: Jolly Rancher)
Apple peel curl, for garnish

Pour vodka, Schnapps and apple juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a pitcher or a chilled martini glass.

Drop a sour apple candy in each glass and garnish with a curl of apple peel.

I would skip the hard apple candy in the bottom of the glass.
