Is it ok to put a seam at the sink? Can u recomend a sink?

Hi, I have finally found a fabricator I feel comfortable with. I like too that he said not to put one of my two seams at the sink, agreeing with what I have read. Of course he isn't the least expensive, but do think he is in the upper middle which is fine, one of the other fabricators who was less expensive, was throwing in the sink (16g) and an ogee endge. I'm now thinking of a 1/2 bullnose or ease edge, which do you like better? I will also have to purchase my sink, saw a Kraus 16g on overstock which has excellent reviews, but it's not the D shape I originally wanted. Any one have a D shape sink they like? Do you like it? While on the topic of sinks, originally wanted the Kholer Vinnata forcet, but realize now you may have other suggestions, do you?

I have a Blanco silgranite D-bowl sink that I love. It's now three years old and still looks as new as the day it was installed. I've had Kholer cast iron, and stainless, but nothing, IMO, can touch the silgranite. Also, got the sink at a great discount purchasing it online. I did not want a seam at the sink, and our fabricator was able to eliminate it and we have a corner sink.

We have an undermount D-Bowl in the laundry that we love--it's a Luxart Model# LXUS04. It was very reasonably priced if I remember correctly. They also make double sinks where the larger of the two bowls is D-shaped.

Definitely no seam at the sink as it's just asking for trouble.

I'm more of a fan of an ease edge or flat edge on the grnaite for the most part and using ogee edges as ornamental like on an island.

If you're looking for deals, Overstock.com & Ira's Attic on Irawoods.com are great places to look. Additionally, other faucet manufacturers make similarly styled faucets to the Kohler Vinnata that may be more pocket book friendly.

We were talking about this thread in another and I didn't realize cwalen had responded again! Sorry! lyfia - That's part of what the 12" between sink and DW is for. You step just a bit in front of that 12" drawer stack so you can pull the trash out, scrap, rinse, load. (I just tried it in my corner sink area to be sure!) cwalen - I think that placement is fine. Or, you could switch it with the cab next to it so it's a little closer to the range (in case one person is also prepping near the range - a little easier for them to get to). If you did that then you won't need to step to the side for the clearance during cleanup. But as I mentioned - I just tested out the side step and it was pretty insignificant! :)

Linda - From your description, a 100" x 36" island (I'm thinkin' a simple rectangle - correct me if I am not visualizing you island correctly) should NOT be a problem putting a farm sink opening in it and maintaining the integrity of the assembly. This has been done on much larger islands.. HOWEVER - That being said, AND in all fairness to your Fabricator - there MAY be a reason that he is advising you that a seam has to be done, and something that is not being said here in the thread.... Like I always say - it's easy for me to sit out here in Arizona and "second guess" somebody - when I am not there on the jobsite or involved with the details of the project, So, AGAIN....... IN ALL FAIRNESS to your Fabricator ( I am one too), perhaps there is a valid reason WHY he is proposing that a seam be used in this assembly. MAYBE your stone is prone to breakage, and this is why he is proposing the seam...... MAYBE it's where the sink is located that he feels that the structural integrity of the piece could be compromised IF he attempts to ship and install your island in one piece. Bottom line here is this: Give him an honest chance to explain why the seam needs to be done - Chances are. he may be SO good at doing seams, that you will hardly notice it once it's done... I dunno... Just keep an open mind, be fair and considerate, and IF things don't sound right and you need some reassuring, post again here in GW and on this thread - After all...........there's LOT's of prople that are here to help you (including me) hope that helps..... ;) kevin Kevin M. The lesson I learned from Kevin, a regular contributor on this site, and a fabrication professional was, if I remember correctly, "shorter and thinner." If that holds true in your situation then you should be good to go with seams at the sink - a short, thin seam in front of the sink and in back of the sink. I am a fabricator. We do not seam at the sink except in special circumstances. It doesn't make sense to me to have a seam at the busiest location in the entire kitchen. Fabricators "sell" the seam at the sink because it eliminates their risk of a cracked sink rail. However, the vast majority of the time a seam elsewhre is preferable. sink rails can be "rodded", which involves epoxying a steel rod into the underside of the sink rail, to minimize the chance of a crack. when I started my shop I made an arrangement with a local engineering college to do a test of rodded vs. unrodded. The materials science professor (one of my partners teachers) assigned the project to 3 senior engineering students. They built a hydraulic test fixture with computer data acquisition and confirmed that rodded rails are substantially less prone to cracking. (I mention this because there are a lot of "opinions" in the industry about the benefits of rodding and the people that assert that rodding doesn't help are simply wrong.) With rodding and proper care during install most granites can have an undermount sink without a seam at the sink.

We have a seam at the sink and it's fine. As long as the sink is properly supported, there is no issue with it. And if the sink isn't properly supported, it can cause a problem even if there isn't a seam there.

Because of the length and width of our slabs and size of our L, we had to either have the seam at the sink or over the dishwasher to have only one seam. Anywhere else would have required 2 seams. Here is our sink with the seam:

Here's why a seam at the sink is not a good idea-what if you get granite Cut #1 or #2 in boxerpup's posting on the link below(drawings at the bottom of her post under the photos) What are you going to do if the stuff they use to fill the seam starts to break down or isn't applied properly? That's what happened to my sister's granite which is seamed smack dab in the middle of her sink--let's not even talk about how during this economic crisis her granite fabricator filed for bankruptcy, reopened under a different name, won't honor the warranty & how no other granite fabricator will even touch it to make the repair! You wouldn't believe how much buildup she gets in that crack--can you just imagine the potential for bacteria growth?!? Why take the chance of putting a seam in a high traffic/food/water area if you don't have to? Plus not all seams are as well done as cloud_swift's is in the above pic. Just my $0.02.

The counter seams should joined with epoxy which doesn't break down and forms a very strong bond. Having a longer seam isn't a fix for a fabricator who doesn't do good seams. Can you the work of the fabricators that you are considering? We had a couple of friends who had used the fabricator who we used for our kitchen. For the fireplace surround, we trusted our GC's recommendation, but he had done a number of small jobs for us over the years and we knew that we had always been satisfied with the subs he chose.

I have a seam at each of two sinks. This is the 5th year, and both still look great. It really all depends on your contractor--how well they match it, how well they cut it, and how well they epoxy it. We were lucky!
