breeding coyote meals

This is what I call the perfect coyote meal.

I think this kind of breeding is sad, cruel and ignorant.

As with so many other animals bred for human enjoyment and cuteness(cruelty).

How do you feel about this.....

My mother has these goats, they actually do better against animals then with people. they will butt the dogs out of the pen. If you try to catch one they will stiffen up, but they will let you mess with them with out acting too stressed out, the babies you don't hardly see them 'faint' as they have been around people and are not scared of them. Even her billy does not do it that often.

I am with you, Anya, taking advantage of a genetic defect so that people can be amused at the odd fainting behavior seems to illustrate the worst of human nature.

I think a lot about human nature. I cannot understand our attraction to certain things. Like I cannot see why we are so interested in stories about the Mafia. Why romanticize people who undermine the social norms and laws in order to take advantage of others? (paying protection, forcing businesses to use mob-run garb age haulers, providing drugs and firearms...) Why put these people up as examples of our society by having so many movies and shows about them? And what is with the focus on sex crimes in network TV? I am talking about all of those CSI shows and whatnot. But we recently made national news in my county because an unfortunate woman was apparently murdered and dismembered by her husband. How can bringing so much attention to this one unfortunate (but inconsequential to 99% of viewers) crime be good for us as a society? It would be one thing if we showed a group of people gathering around the family to provide meals and other assistance. No, instead we get a tour through the woods so we can see where a body part was found. We make events worthy of solemn reflection into circuses. The society is very, very sick.

Coyotes are all around in the more secluded wooded areas. They tend to by shy and approach developed areas at night or when things are quiet. Anyone that thinks they don't have coyotes needs to spend a night sleeping outside in a tent, and they will wake up to the sound of coyotes in the middle of the night. There is another group of canines that are wild dogs and mixes of coyotes and wild dogs. They are more bold and tend to live in developed areas. They usually travel in smaller groups. The Pennsylvania Game Commission estimated that stateÂs mid-1990s population at 20,000-30,000 animals. Some reports of coyotes may be feral dogs that resemble the wild ones or may be coyote-dog mixes known as coydogs. However, a study done in the early 1980s by examining the carcasses of coyotes caught inadvertently by trappers showed that the great majority of the animals were indeed specimens of Canis latrans. At first impression, the coyote resembles a small German Shepherd Dog, but yellow eyes, black lines on the legs, and a cylindrical, low hanging tail are distinguishing characteristics. HeÂs smaller than the wolf but has the same muscular appearance and protective coat of his cousin. In keeping with the general biological principle that northern varieties of species are larger than their southern counterparts, coyotes vary in size from 25 pounds in Mexico to 75 pounds in the mountains and the northern reaches of their range. Eastern coyotes vary from 35-55 pounds with males considerably larger than females. Length from stem to stern, including the bushy tail, can exceed five feet; height is up to 26 inches at the shoulder. The coyote coat has guard hairs to protect him from the weather and a thick undercoat for insulation. Body coat color varies from brownish yellow to reddish gray, with darker colors more common in the northern reaches of the territory. Legs, feet, and ears are rusty, and underparts are whitish. The tail has a black tip. His long legs, pointed muzzle and upright, pointed ears complete the picture. Like dogs, coyotes have four canine teeth, two upper and two lower, for grabbing and holding prey. The canines are not as sharp as those of a large cat. The premolars behind the canine teeth assist in tearing chunks of meat from larger prey. Canids also have molars for chewing, but these teeth donÂt get much workout unless the animal is crunching bones or eating small, hard objects such as nuts. Skeletal structure, muscles, and the tendons and ligaments that bind the package together are geared to survival. The coyote can run down his prey, leap and twist to follow rabbit and rodent, and lope for hours without tiring.

We have had a good size pack (from the sound) of Coyotes living in our gully here in the Finger Lakes for several years now. They have lots of cover and plenty of rodents/ rabbits to feast on, their primary diet. I have sheep and a horse and electric net fencing, so no trouble so far. The neighbor who has a good size flock of sheep had a sheep guard dog in with the flock. No reports of coyote attacks on any of the local flocks. We do have barn cats disappear, but they do wander into the woods, so possibly cross tracks with the pack. But then we also have raccoon and fox, so maybe they are responsible. The strange thing is that the Coyotes seem to have disappeared this winter. We know there IS rabies in the area - my husband got bitten by a confirmed rabid skunk in Feb., so I am wondering if the pack was taken sick and died out. With the number of rodents and rabbits they eat, they are welcome to live in my gully, and since it is good habitat, I assume they will be back. On another note, I have had Owls living in my woods in the gully since I have lived here - 32 years - but I did not hear a single Owl this winter. I leave old and dying trees in the gully to encourage their nesting, so I know they have shelter, and am wondering what could have happened to them also. -Rosalinda

I saw two little coyotes not long ago. Was driving down a highway that had a big drainage ditch that crossed it. The county had mowed the banks of the ditch and as my eye followed it, I saw two coyote pups bouncing and playing. I know a lot of people don't like them, but they are one of our native animals and it made me smile to see them. We had a coyote that came to dinner every evening for many months. Some people dumped out three coyote pups near my place. They had taken them from their den, partially raised them, decided they didn't want them any more, and just dumped them out...knowing I feed wildlife. I was upset at first because I didn't want them eating the raccoons, possums and cats, and soon two left, but one stayed for a long time. I used to take food back to him at the edge of the woods. He would meet me every evening. He would be laying at the edge of the pasture, and see me coming and jump up and run through the woods and back around to the fence. I'd put his food over the fence, while he stood about 30' away. As soon as I turned my back, I could hear him chomping the dog chow. I fed him dog food, but he also loved fruit...especially bananas and watermelon and always ate that first. Eventually he left but one time I looked across the pasture and he was there. I took food to him but he looked thin. I left his food and for several days I left food for him, but never saw him again after that.

wanton - that article was interesting, particularly re noting their ability to quickly adapt to new environments. I went through DH's Flickr pictures looking at the history of 'our' coyotes.... The coyotes moved into the woodlot in late fall or early winter of 2013. In his comments on this picture from mid-Feb. 2014 - not one of 'our' pack - he refers to ours being nocturnal and only catching a brief glimpse of one. In this picture from August 2014, the female is quite comfortable lounging on the grass, outside the woodlot, in daylight, in an area where lots of people are present at times. In this picture from June 2015 you can see the collar on the male. It was collared in early October 2013 20 miles away. He had to cross Hwy 401 - one of the busiest highways in North America! - and other busy roads in order to get to the woodlot here. He was born in the spring of 2013. So they are smart, and grow up fast, and travel far! (The collar was supposed to automatically drop off within a year but obviously malfunctioned.) In this picture from July 2015 you can see that the female (who had 3 pups that spring) is comfortable napping in a parking spot outside a seniors' residence! Both the adults were casually strolling the neighbourhood and going into backyards. By the fall 2015, they all had mange - this picture is one of the pups. The Humane Society and a wildlife service was able to trap and treat the juveniles but, as far as we know, were not able to trap the adults. So it is probable that the coyotes currently in the woods are from last year's pups that were treated for mange. The original breeding pair are likely dead from mange. A few days before this picture was taken in early Feb. 2016, DH and Cole had the confrontation with a coyote in the backyard. That prompted us to build the fence extension. Certainly a determined coyote could still get over the fence but the fence should at least slow it down! Plus the extension part is likely to get knocked over as a coyote scrambled over it. Before we do out with a dog (no dog here goes out unsupervised now!) we look to see if the top of the fence looks intact.... Given the Russian experiments with domesticating foxes, beginning in 1959 (very interesting - lots of stuff on YouTube and Google...), we can only hope that eventually removing all aggressive coyotes might someday result in a 'kinder and gentler' coy-wolf :-)

According to articals I have read they were bred because they couldn't jump fences and escape.
But also one of the functions of the fainting goat was/is to use them as sacrificial bait for predators. If you stick a fainting goat in with a flock of sheep, for example, it will keel over when the wolves show up, allowing the sheep time to escape while the wolves strip his stiff, little body of goat-meat.

Nancy - Well Said! You are close enough to Cananda, you should consider moving their. I'm from MI and have been to Canada numerous times, their society is so much more peaceful then ours. This is demonstrated by their extremly low crime rates, and no crime leads to their news being much more pleasant.

the adams - HA! We have looked into it, believe me. I have "Canadian History for Dummies" on my bookshelf. Unfortunately, we may not do it until we retire, but we do consider defecting to Canada all the time. We usually go to the Toronto Film Festival every September (we had to miss last year due to owning two houses and being too busy at work) and we spend 10 days there feeling very at home. Many times the Canadians we meet give us the compliment of saying we sound like we already live there. I catch accents like other people catch viruses.

I'm so jealous, we are in AZ and I really miss going to Canada. We will be making a major move in a few years and Canada's on our list!

anya, not that we meant to hijack your thread...

I am not sure what I think of the information you learned about bait for predators. I suppose when you have a herd of sheep as part of your income, having a little goat die here and there is a better choice, but it is not so good for the goat! Aren't sheepdogs supposed to help protect the flocks? It seems there could be better choices than having sacrificial goats!

Those dogs haven't been in this country all that long and they arent the tool for everyone.

We have a few doctors in this area (nwPa.) who came here from canada so they could make a better living, went back to canada because they werent accustomed to working the long hours that MDs work here, then returned to the US to stay now.1 does go home to can. when he can to see his wife who wont move here.
