Will dividing conquer this 24-lb bird?

Our Thanksgiving family/friends dinner at our daughter's house will feature 8-9 people. My daughter thought she had read that one should plan on about 3 pounds of bird per person [!!], so she bought a 24-pound bird. [!!!] She HAD BEEN planning to deep-fry it but when she got home realized it was way too big for the fryer pot (if she forced it in, there would be little room left for the oil, which I pointed out would probably be a Bad Thing), so we spent her drive time to work this morning on the phone discussing Plan B.

Now, they also have an electric smoker, so the best thing we could come up with was to cleave the bird in half AFTER brining it whole, smoke one half, and deep-fry the other. (Nice side effect is that we will find out which method is preferred by the majority.)

So--our question: can anyone point out any flaws in this plan, or offer any suggestions to ensure a successful main course? My thought was that both halves will cook more quickly than the projected times for a whole bird of 12 pounds since the configuration is like 2 half-spheres rather than a whole ball, as it were. Granted, the oil or smoke enters the cavity of a whole turkey, but still, it seems to me the halves will be less dense & therefore cook more quickly. It is a fresh turkey, BTW, not frozen.

Your thoughts and suggestions regarding this dilemma would be much appreciated.

Whatever happens, I am sure it will be a memorable Thanksgiving... :-)
