Can we talk about sanding?

So, I've painted lots of furniture in the past, but I'm about to paint about 9 different pieces, all at once. Well, one at a time, but back to back.

I've always used a palm sander, and just plain old sandpaper for hand finishing, details, or light sanding.

Is there a better/faster/more efficient way? Are the sanding pads or sponges really better? Do they last longer? Is there a better grade of sandpaper that won't require sheets and sheets to get through a project? I'll be working on a mix of flat and curved surfaces- tables with turned legs, dressers, chairs, etc.

Also, I've always used a plain cheap dust mask, but I'm investing in a better respirator. I'll be doing some spray painting, too. Any reccomendations?

Just the thought of all of that sanding and painting kind of makes my hands numb, but I'm going to try and get all of these pieces done and my house back together before Thanksgiving.
