porcelain tile--textured vs smooth
Comments (3)We had smooth tile on our floor before our remodel. Now we have textured. The smooth tile was often slippery...especially if wet and if anything oily got on it. I much prefer the textured. I don't think it is really any harder to clean. Both require scrubbing from time to time. The smooth also looked dirtier...the textured hides dirt better. This is a pro for me (since I have a day job and can't sweep/mop everyday. For other people, though, they might consider this a con (since they want to know when it's dirty so they can get to it right away)....See MoreDog vs wood flooring question
Comments (26)Our floor is a Bruce solid hardwood with aluminum oxide finish. Two Golden Retrievers, 90 and 75 lbs. We've lived here 5 years and the floors are in terrible condition. Here is how I describe terrible: bare wood in the places that get the most toenail action, beveled edges with no finish, crud down in the grooves between the beveled edges (I'll NEVER have beveled edges again!), many, many visible nail impressions in the finish/wood. A refinisher said the nails cause impressions in the wood, not necessarily a scratch in the finish. But, the finish has come off in places. The refinisher also said that the aluminum oxide finish is very difficult to sand off, requiring many changes of the sanding pad and more work than removing polyurethane. This, of course, means it costs more to refinish. After reading these posts (and many, many others) I believe the wood itself, in combination with the finish, is the key. Even though these Bruce floors are oak, it is my opinion that it is a "soft" oak - my guess, and that is all it is, is the wood is from young trees....See MoreBrick paver flooring for kitchen - pros and cons
Comments (18)We live in Richardson, TX. Those brick pavers - those D*** things are EVERYWHERE here! The builders must have gotten them for a penny a ton back in the day. I hate them, hate them, hate them. They tear up your mops, shred sponges, and happily grab onto the tiniest speck of dust and turn it into a basketball- sizes hairball. We are happily ridding ourselves of these pesky pains in the A**, by having them ground (because they were stained and sealed - YUCK) and having beautiful new porcelain tile put down. The grinding is like living on Mars for a day, (the dust is EVERYWHERE), but anything to get rid of the pavers. thumbs down on pavers. Oh, and they REALLY hurt your feet. I would spend a whole weekend sweeping, mopping and waxing- never again! BOO to brick pavers!...See MorePros and Cons: Floor Tile With Large Grout Lines
Comments (17)Thanks to all of you for your personal experiences! Chispa, Your point about the ka-chunk is valid, since I may use a wheelchair someday, and will be using a wheeled walker and a wheeled stool. While the wheelchair's tires may not do that, the stool's wheels will, and moving around on the uneven floor will be difficult for that stool. I think that I was not letting myself see that the tile really would leave an uneven floor surface. I was thinking that the slippery surface was not an issue because of all of the grout, so your experience is helpful there, too. The tiles are only 2" x 2.25" and I was imagining the foot having contact with lots of grout with each step. If the recessed grout really does not do this, though, it is good to know! A Sawenz, this is supposed to be a floor tile, and it is porcelain, but I see your point about the PEI number. I will keep that in mind as I look at other floor tiles. I have been looking for porcelain, rather than ceramic, for the harder material....See Moreteedup1
