Sippy cups to bed

I have a 2 1/2 yr old son. He has been going to bed with a sippy cup since I put him on one. (It was the bottle before). So he has needed to be drinking something to go to sleep.

I tried taking him off the sippy cup all together, but thought maybe it's not the sippy cup being my concern, it's the sippy cup at night. Does anyone have any insight to when a toddler should be cut off from using a sippy cup, or any advice on teaching him to go to sleep on his own?

I guess there is no way to extract the cup, without tears and fuss.

I saw on tv that show "supernanny" and she uses this technique of getting rid of the dummy. They tie it to a lovely floating balloon and watch it float away into the sky. So the child sees it going, and knows it cant come back.

Perhaps you could dream up some sort of happy way of getting rid of the cup. And then replace the cup with something else, like a new bear to cuddle instead.

It will only take a few nights to get it all working properly. Your child has to learn to put himself to sleep, without a crutch.

Of course I am sure you know about making bedtime a routine, with stories, and kisses, and cuddles, and at the same time every night.

Why do you want to take the cup away ?

And start how you mean to go on, dont relent and give in, this will make further challenges more difficult.

I think the issues are the sippy cup at night as a sleep-aid, as well as his need for it when it's movie time. Blankie, Elmo and "baba"... his essentials. Then he is not hungry for dinner. So I just can't seem to decide if the sippy cup is bad in general.... or if the times I am letting him have them is the issue. As I write this, I find myself answering my own questions. Maybe I should hold off on those two occasions somehow... creatively.

You are not taking a step back by putting pull-ups on her at night. It takes a while to become dry at night, sometimes a LONG LONG LONG Time. Doctors do not even get concerned about it until it reaches the teen years (SeRIOUSLY, I know this for a fact). Each year 1/2 of the kids who wet the bed stop, that means that 1/2 of them still do, this continues on for a long time. Now when they become, I think it is around 8, there is medical interventions (when we were going through it there was DDAVP i think it was called, a nasal spray that didn't interrupt their sleep). SO.... 1. Put the pull-ups back on, remove the stress from you and her. Let her body mature naturally to not wetting at night. 2. Stop liquids after supper. 3. Have her go to the bathroom before bedtime. 4. Start a "Star" chart as soon as you notice she is having dry nights (Don't do it now as it will be discouraging, do it when she has her first few morning with dry pull-ups). Then each morning she is dry, she gets a star. After X number of stars (5 or 7 say, not in a row, and no taking any away for accidents or bad nights or anything) she gets a trip to the dollar store and can buy something for a dollar...I know I'm cheap, but you're not giving big rewards, and pretty soon there will be lots of rewards, that's the goal. She will eventually be dry, and the pull-ups will save your sanity. It really isn't encouraging a bad habit, reverting to an old habit, it is more saving your sheets, and making her feel better about things. Don't make a big deal out of it, just tell her...honey, since you are wetting the bed, and it's uncomfortable sleeping in a wet bed, let's pick out some pretty pull-ups for you. But remember you ahve to take them off right away in the morning and go potty ok, they are not to pee in when you're awake, they're only for incase you have an accident when you're asleep. Thanks rhome and bmore for that help. That problem is solved! I must have stumbled on that resizing option by accident in the first place. doraville, thanks for the empathy. Picasa is quite fast. I agree p'bucket is a pain to work through. Maybe after my kitchen is done I'll switch over. And your new kitchen is quite amazing! Beautiful cabinets, granite, floors, splash, dogs... The LOP probably helped get you through to this point, but I know you are happy to have your new elements finished! Congratulations! I'm guessing with those gorgeous cherry trees you live somewhere in the southeast, or eastern seaboard? jrueter, so funny about your DH! Now, you don't have any quirks like that, do you? I'm sure I don't! And I always do everything I am constantly telling my kids to do. rhome, with eight kids, I think there wouldn't be enough colors for that kind of a system anyway! But... sigh... it probably is yet another thing I just need to let go of for now. I always say I am going to deal with one thing at a time and end up trying to fix everything at once. I look forward to getting back to normal... if there is such a thing.

I've got 4 soon to be 5 kids so we have lots of plastics around here. I can't imagine not having the heated dry function on my dw. I run it twice a day a lot of times so I would find it annoying if I had to wait for everything to dry. That being said some of the plastic stuff does still need to air dry a bit and I just stack it on the counter for a while. Is it an elegant solution? No, but my life with young kids isn't very elegant right now so I'm not too concerned. I do have a cabinet to put water bottles in to dry with their lids off though and in my new kitchen there is a deep drawer dedicated to tupperware type stuff and another for water bottles. As far as the heated dry function warping plastics, ours doesn't seem to hurt the plastic stuff if I put it on the top shelf. The ziploc throwaway type food containers I do wash by hand though because they do warp in the wash but that's the only thing I wash by hand.

In all likelihood, it will shrink back, but there may still be some tell-tale edge showing. Short of sanding and recoating, one thing you might try while the wood's still moist is to lay a towel over the area and take an iron to it, set fairly low. The dry heat combined with the pressure of the iron and steam from the damp wood should bring everything back in line. First, test the iron/towel process in an inconspicuous spot to see if the varnish coat will be affected in any way.

I don't see the harm as long as it's only water in it. Anything else can rot his teeth.

My question as well....if it's only water, don't sweat it...
But remind him that when he gets to be a big boy he will drink out of a glass like big kids do....and can't take that to bed with him, but will be able to have it on his night stand or dresser in case he needs a drink ( with very luittle water in it!)

My grandson, age 26 months, always had a sippy cup till about 3 weeks ago. He always had milk in it, but when we switched to water, after about 2 nights, he did not want it any more. We give him a glass of milk before he goes to bed, then he brushes his teeth and knows he can only have water after that. He may take a sip or two, but for the most part, does not want it at all anymore. Now if we can just get him to learn to be put in his bed and not have to stay there till he falls asleep!

Update! He's going to sleep with no sippy cup now, like a champ! I had a hard couple nights at first, but stood firm. He kept getting up, wanting a drink which I let him have from the fridge, but that was only bad for a couple days. I gave him this stuffed cow and told him he would help him fall asleep. Now he doesn't even pay attention to that cow and sleeps all through the night! Thanks for all the good advice ; )
