Was it the buttermilk?

I made a new muffin recipe and they had a taste to them that was not pleasant to me. Kinda of a maltiness, hard to explain. Could it have been the buttermilk?

Other ingredients were: oats, oat bran, and nuts (toasted), brown sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, eggs, vanilla, butter, and dried cranberries.

How does one adjust a recipe to work with milk instead of buttermilk?
