latex glazes over oil base paint?

I have kitchen cabinets that are painted with BM Dove White akyld enamal low lustre paint. Can I use a Signature latex glaze from Lowes to glaze them? If not, where can I purchase oil based glazes or can I make my own. If I use the latex glaze, do I then have to put a latex protective finish over it? Help.

Why would you need any glaze over oil?

I wanted to use a taupe colored glaze to go over the cabinets and then to wipe off 95% of the glaze leaving it only in the crevices to give it a different look other than just white. This is done all the time by cabinet makers....they may call them distressed, etc. I just know that normally you do not put latex over oil products, but due to time limit, I forged ahead and did it. After wiping with lint-free cloths, I used a high quality brush and feather brushed in the direction of the grain and it turned out beautifully. They still look white from a distance, but up close they have a very subtle distressing effect. I am very pleased. Now I have to wait a week and then put a protective coat of water based poly over them. So far..so good....

"lovely peeling latex paint" Bad prep work. Latex cab go over oil but you need very good prep work. A bonding primer can help, but only if the oil paint is CLEAN. TSP or spic-and-span clean. Oil over latex is a really bad idea. The oil film is much harder than a latex film, and it WILL crack and crackle. They way you obtain a crackle finish is by putting a harder finish over a softer one. It really matters what order the paints are applied. Luckily latex, (even acrylic) paints are softer than alkyd (oil) paints once cured.

Paint is different from stain in that paint will create a new film on top of your old coating while stain will penetrate. IMO paint peels while stain you just recoat when needed. Also, if you do decide to paint you should probably prime so that is an extra step you are adding. Paint also hides the grain of the wood more so it depends on what kind of look you are going for, type of wood, etc.

Amen to that! I discovered a few months ago that some of our trim paint is peeling in the kitchen. We're sure that the whole place was "painted to sell" including NEW popcorn on the ceiling. There's a few places where the popcorn is cracking and flaking. I can't even imagine what a huge mess that will be to fix (who puts up NEW popcorn these days??) but fixing any of it isn't in the current time/money/ energy budget. It seems like every month for the last year, we've had to undo some mess that they did (plumbing, electrical, etc. etc.) I will be cursing the PO's of this house for a very long time. Some people say they'll have a party when they pay off their mortgage, and we say we're having a party when we finally fix all of their mess!

You will need to clean the walls really well, with a good detergent, and the prime them all with an oil based bonding sealing primer. Once that is done, you can paint with regular latex paint. The nicotine will wash off, when you scrub the walls. Only reason now for the dripping down the walls, is that you havent scrubbed the walls, or if you have, not good enough.

I think it's ok if it is just going to be in the crevices, but if you want to glaze over the whole surface it will just scratch right off.
