Any volunteer readers out there???

I've completed a manuscript that I've spent five years writing. It's a book on internet dating, telling about the true story of my 70 first dates. It's on its way to the editor's hands in a few days and I'd love to have some feedback before it goes there.

After that, it'll be published and then (hopefully), it'll be up at Amazon within 60 days or so. That's the plan, anyway.

So, if you'd be interested in reading this, please send me an email, and I can send the word doc by return email.

Do you take constructive criticism well? LOL If so, I'd love to read it.

How about somebody else? I'd think that other input would be helpful.

Yes, I take constructive criticism pretty well. My daughter read the manuscript and said three pages were just "boring." They were three pages I'd spent days toiling over. I re-read those three pages and saw she was right. I ditched them!

Fact is, I prefer an honest critique to a "oh yeah, it's all perfect" response.

Before we bought a compost bin this year we just had a pile (lots of leaves). I posted before about some kind of cucurb in it. Turns out we have at least 3 different kinds - a striped green and yellow gourd or squash (2 fruits now), a patty pan squash (2 fruits), and something that looks right now like a miniature pumpkin (1 fruit). Plus one that I transplanted to the garden and has lots of flowers but no fruit yet. I had bought a whole basket (almost a bushel) of mixed gourds/squash for $3 at Wmart last fall for decoration, threw them all in the pile in December. Plants are spreading across the hillside behind the garden now. Also had a lot of tomato volunteers from the new compost bin. I planted a couple in pots, 1 has flowers so we'll see what comes up. Hope they're Campari and not the tasteless grape tomatoes that started getting wrinkly b/c no one wanted to eat them! I also can't explain this - I planted various kinds of indeterminate tomatoes in trenches with a trellis, trying to keep 1 or 2 varieties at most in each row. Yellow pear tomatoes seemed to have lots of root suckers coming up. But after a while I noticed RL volunteers that look exactly like the pear tomato babies coming up in my other rows with my PL heirlooms (and my Speckled Roman pastes and cherries which are RL but a much more delicate leaf)! Definitely tomatoes, not weeds, b/c when you rub the leaves your fingers have that lovely "tomato plant smell". I imagine these have to be root suckers from the transplants, but I have no idea why the leaves look different from the parents. I left some of them to see what happens.

On our dining room table right now there is a beautiful holiday-greens arrangement that was sent to me the day before Christmas by a reader. It was delivered to the office of one of the newspapers for which I write, and it's a miracle I got it at all, since I do all my writing from home. (They usually open all my mail and copies of review books mysteriously "disappear" or "never arrive." However, I don't like to give out my home address to strangers, and newspaper business cards list office only.... Another subject for another time?) Honestly, though, I usually only hear when they are angry or disagree with me. The funniest was the note from a woman who was furious that I had published a photo of her husband standing next to another woman (in a group shot) at a fundraiser. Wifey was also at the event and she wrote that I should have gone looking for her before I took photo of hubby. (I had asked the group for permission to publish.) The nastiest correspondence arrived last year from a "gentleman" after I admitted in a column that the look of forsythias in bloom in early spring (fountains of bloom vs. pruned lollypops, of course) made me happy and I loved them. Wow! He was not a happy camper. (Of course, I contacted a few colleagues for their opinions on the subject for my Spring 2004 version of the same column.) Really, though, I don't mind it when someone disagrees with or corrects me if its done in a constructive way. At least I know someone "out there" is reading.

I see no one has posted here in a while but I'm sure we are all reading. Scraphappy, I discovered Rosamond Pilcher sometime back and like her books especially The Shell Seekers-it was made into a movie staring Angela Lansbury who I also like. I recently read Twenty Wishes by Debbie Macomber. I liked it maybe best of any of her books I've read. At the moment I'm reading another of her books called Between Friends. The time frame is my life so it has brought up lots of memories. Keep Reading Sally

They may well be treated for insects, but otherwise still viable. Just BTW my mother, who grew into an avid gardener, said when she and dad married and moved into there first house, she so badly wanted a veggie garden. Having no knowledge of such, she bought a packet of dried peas and soaked them overnight before planting them. LOL. Post WW2 depression days it was probably pretty expensive compost. I love it that we never stop learning. And nothing puts us off trying.

I'm excited for you about your book! My DS met his first wife via the internet (marriage didn't last) and they both have stories. Anyway, I'd love to read the book.

I am a "readaholic" so would love to read your book. I met my now deceased SO through an ad, that was before on-line dating. We were together 17 years. Before that I had another "gentleman" friend that I knew was a loser and only went with him for a short time. I had been a widow for many years and was encouraged to try the ad dating by co-workers.

Thank-you SO much for your help. I've re-written two chapters, reducing them from 11 pages to 2, so if anyone would like to keep reading - into the GOOD stuff (the true story of those 70 first dates) drop me a line.

I'm really grateful for all the "volunteers" who read the work and offered their insights and advice.

How many chapters are there to the book? I read the three chapters you sent me which covers the 69 dates, with the 70th being the winner. I am wondering if this is more "article-length" rather thank book length or is there a lot more coming?
