I don't know about the cake, either, but I second that it's good to see you! I recently made the "Pork Tenderloin with Bourbon Sauce" that you posted a while back and it was delicious. Thanks! Hope things are well.

I just added Golden Friendship to my collection this year, and intend to do exactly what you are doing by sharing it with others. I currently use a small, rather hard to find older variety called Special Gift for the same purpose, but Golden Friendship is a showier variety. I also select from my more mature seedlings and give them appropriate names for those who have lost a beloved pet. A dear friend recently had to euthanize her horse, and she got a nice, lightly misted blue seedling called Misty Love for her yard. Next spring she will also get a mature Blue Angel for the actual gravesite. Other plants that I have given as memorials include Tiny Tears, Sweetheart, and Praying Hands. I do avoid giving or recommending the obvious choice of Remember Me, as it is a very poor grower.

No, but that sounds good. The one I had didn't have lemon or cottage cheese. It did have sour cream and cream cheese, but I can't remember all the ingredients or amounts. After it finished baking, you were to turn off the oven and don't even open the oven door for 1 hour then you only crack the oven door for another hour. It was very light and fluffy and was hard to get to come out right, but when it did it was devine. Thanks Glenda

Is the recipe you mean by the base? It's from the University of Illinois Extension. How to Make a Friendship Cake Starter There are a least a hundred versions of the starter and the resulting bread or cake recipe going around. There is one with fruit, one with nuts, one made with whole wheat flour and raisins and the list goes on and on. Here is one method for starting the starter. Friendship Cake Starter Recipe 1 package active dry yeast 3 cups warm water (105° to 115°F), divided 2 cups all purpose flour, sifted 2 tablespoons sugar Starter food Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water, stirring well; let stand 5 minutes or until bubbly. Combine remaining water, flour and sugar in a medium size, non-metallic bowl; mix well. Add dissolved yeast and stir well. Cover loosely with plastic wrap or cheesecloth and let stand in a warm place (80°-85°F) three days, stirring 2-3 times daily. Place fermented mixture in refrigerator at this point. Stir daily and use within 11 days. Always bring starter to room temperature before using in cake recipe. Allow to set in a warm place for one hour or longer before using. Stir well, then measure amount needed for recipe. Or on day 10 divide the mixture. Measure two to three cups starter for recipe. Divide remaining starter into one cup portions. Place in plastic or glass containers, loosely cover with plastic wrap. Keep one cup for yourself and give one cup each to friends along with the "Nurturing Your Starter" instructions and cake recipe. Nurturing Your Starter Starter Food--Your starter should have a sweet yeasty smell. If at any time you notice signs of spoilage toss the starter and begin again. Do not add milk, cream, or eggs to starter or it may produce harmful bacteria. Day #1 -- The day your receive your 1 cup of starter, stir the mixture with a wooden spoon, let it sit on a counter, loosely covered with crumpled plastic wrap or wax paper for one day. Do not refrigerate at this point. Use a nonmetallic container. Day #2, 3, 4 -- Refrigerate, stir the mixture each day, keep loosely covered. Day #5 -- Transfer starter to a larger glass or ceramic jar or bowl. Add the following "starter food." 1 cup water 1 cup flour 1 cup sugar Stir to mix, cover loosely and return batter to the refrigerator. Mixture will expand. Your container should not be more than half full. Refrigerate the starter at this point. Day #6, 7, 8, 9 -- Stir only and keep refrigerated, loosely covered. Day # 10 -- You may need to transfer the batter to an even larger container. Add more starter food and stir. Allow starter to sit at room temperature for one hour. Remove 3 cup for three friends, and measure 3 cups for the following recipe. Note: If you keep a cup for yourself, start over, beginning with Day #1. Fruit & Nuts Friendship Cake 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 cup sugar 2 cups all purpose flour 2/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons baking powder 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped apples 3 cups starter 1 cup raisins or chopped nuts 1 egg plus 2 egg whites Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl, set aside. In another large bowl mix starter, egg and whites, sugar, oil and vanilla. Add flour mixture, apples and raisins or nuts. Pour into a greased and floured tube pan or 9 x 11 loaf pan. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 60 minutes. Cool, dust with powdered sugar. Note: Any combination of fruit and nuts can be used as long as the total equals 2 cups. Try crushed, drained pineapples, dates, pecans, or almonds.

It will be in her; Trisha's new cook book Trisha Yearwood's German Chocolate Cake with Coconut Frosting Ingredients 4 ounces sweet dark chocolate (see Shopping Hint below) 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature 1/4 cup warm milk 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 5 medium egg whites 2 cups sugar 5 medium egg yolks, at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 cup buttermilk, well shaken For the coconut frosting: 1 cup sugar 4 medium egg yolks 1 cup evaporated milk 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 10 ounces fresh or frozen and thawed grated coconut 1 1/2 cups finely ground pecans, walnuts, or almonds Yields: 12 servings Preparation Prepare the chocolate by melting it in the top of a double boiler, stirring until it is smooth. Add 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) of the butter and stir until it is melted and blended. Add 1/4 cup of warm milk and stir until smooth. Set the chocolate aside to cool. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line the bottoms only of three 9-inch cake pans with circles of parchment paper, or grease each pan bottom only with solid shortening and dust lightly with flour. Sift together the sifted and measured flour, baking soda, and salt. Whip the egg whites until stiff using the wire beater of the mixer. Transfer the beaten whites to a separate bowl and set aside. In the mixer bowl, cream the remaining 1 1/2 sticks of butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the melted, cooled chocolate and the vanilla. Mix well. With the mixer on very low, stir in the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Do this by adding about a third of the flour and slowly stirring it in completely. Then add about half the buttermilk and stir it in. Continue adding flour and buttermilk in this manner, ending with flour. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl and stir again. With a long-handled spoon or spatula, fold and stir the beaten egg whites into the batter until the batter is smooth with no visible clumps of whites. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-40 minutes. Bake on the middle rack of the oven, allowing at least 1/4-inch clearance between the pans and the oven walls. The cake will rise above the pan edges as it bakes but will not spill over and will settle back down as it continues to bake. The cake is done when it begins to pull away from the sides of the pans and springs back to a light touch. Cool layers in the pans for about 8 minutes. Run a knife around the edges of each pan and turn the layers out onto wire racks that have been sprayed with cooking spray. Cool layers completely before frosting. To make the frosting, combine the sugar, egg yolks, and evaporated milk in the top of a double boiler. Stir with a wire whisk until the yolks are fully incorporated. Add the butter. Place over simmering water and bring to a boil (see Note below). Simmer for 12-15 minutes longer, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens. Add the vanilla, coconut, and nuts. Cool. To assemble the cake, place one layer on a cake stand and spread with frosting. Frost each layer completely, top and sides, as it is added to the cake. Note: You can also make the frosting in a regular saucepan, but be sure to stir it constantly, as it scorches quite easily. Also, you must use the finely grated fresh or frozen coconut, not canned or shredded, to be able to spread the frosting on the sides of the cake easily. Shopping Hint: For those cooks who use a lot of sweet baking chocolate, the chocolate used in this recipe can be purchased in bulk online at www.cocoasupply.com. Choose La Equatoriale Â Dark Chocolate Coverture. The cost, including postage, is half what you would probably pay in grocery stores. Share the large bar with your friends who bake.

That German Friendship Cake has turned up at a good time for me. I'm looking for fun homemade holiday gifts & this might very well have a place in a couple baskets as I'm of solid German descent. Thanks!

That cake made the rounds here about 3 years ago. It was called Amish Friendship Cake. I'm sure it has several titles.

If you don't have some people to take the extras on the 10th day, the starter can be frozen. I Freecycled my starters.

I made a cake with brown sugar, raisins and nuts, and another with poppy seeds. I only made them twice. We didn't care for them, but others love them.

It's a fun little project!

I went through a "Herman" era back in the 1980's (thanks to the generosity of a neighbor). So what's old is new again!

It's also known as Friendship Cake or Amish Friendship Cake. I have a nice little booklet "Friendship Starters with Recipes", and as with any sourdough starter you can use it for cornbread, pancakes, biscuits, scones, coffee cakes, etc.

People who use starters often name them - mostly because they need so much care and feeding (speaking from experience ;-).

It's really not "German" any more than it is any other country of origin that makes naturally-leavened baked goods, but just a modern version of a sourdough starter.

It can be a lot of fun. I remember sharing it with my mother and she called to tell me "Herman" was dead and she was glad... She lived in a tiny town (2-blocks big), and there was a Herman in every refrigerator. After you've given away the "Herman" starter to everyone you know, and even some you don't know, you will end up "killing" Herman by baking the last bit of him into any number of quick breads and other recipes it can be used for.

Glad to see our favorite "canarybird" posting today! So...Herman didn't make it over to Spain yet? LOL! Here is another link to a Friendship Bread site that has lots of recipes to make with the starter.

Thank you all for your kind comments for me and your thoughts on the bread.

I might just try making this one day soon and if it turns out well, perhaps make some for friends at Christmas. Not sure if they like sourdough but I get the impression that this one is sweet. One of the local ladies posted the link I put at the start of the thread on a Tenerife forum and said her bread was delicious.

Hopefully my big oven will still work, as today I found that large chunks of the pink fluffy insulation from the bottom of the oven had been scratched out and was lying on the floor of the warming oven underneath. I actually heard something scratching when I walked into the kitchen.

The other day I found a gecko inside the oven. He ran out when I opened the oven door. Just shows how much I use it! I just hope thereÃÂ´s nothing bigger than a gecko trying to make a nest in there.

I still use my little countertop toaster oven but would need the big one for making bread.
Will have to call someone to check it out before I start baking.

I went through the Herman/Amish/German Friendship cake a few years ago. Soon everyone I knew would run if they saw a container in my hand, they knew it was going to be "starter", LOL.

We added blueberries, zucchini, pineapple, pears, peaches, various nuts, just to "change it up" a little. It actually was a pretty good quick bread but everyone got so tired of it and it was never really gone!

I was like Grainlady's mother and I was glad when Herman died. LOL Actually I did make the recipe that came with mine and I didn't like it at all, and I like sourdough. In fact, I made a new starter this week and made four loaves of bread today and shared with neighbors.
