Feeding seat & crib...

We would like to buy the First years 4- in -1 feeding seat for pur 12- month old. Does anyone have any experience with this?. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Also, these cribs that are convertable (upto a full bed), can they really be used that long, or is it better to stick with a regular crib?

I'm not familar with the high chair you are talking about but I believe even our Graco was considered a 4 in 1 or something. What they meant by that was that it had several different positions that you could put it in to work with the child as they grew. We used that thing for about 2 + years and DS recently started sitting in a booster at the table with us. I really think the things that you can use over time are much better than something that you use for a few months and replace. The less things you have to keep and store, the better. I wouldn't recommend it for families that are hard on things, though, because you won't get your money's worth if you have to replace the thing because you didn't care for it. I like the idea of the bed, too but again take care of it as best as you can so when your child is using it later, you aren't wishing you just bought seperate stuff. Another thing is that most parents buy the crib and use it for several kids and then buy them a new bed when they get older. You would have to buy a new crib later on. Just something I thought of. Sorry, I can't be of more help. I just thought I would try to help by answering you post.

Thanks a lot for the response, Leslie. The feeding seat I was talking about is not a high chair but a booster seat. Since we managed without a high chair for so long, we were wondering if we could skip it and just move on to the booster seat.

Yes, Linda. LOL. I won't be using it until I get my screened in porch which is years away...!! I originally thought it was a foot stool but wasn't sure how it would have worked with the "spindles". I still can't picture it. Would the area between the spindles remained open? If so, I'm not sure why a board was needed on the bottom....

Wow...this IS one active forum! 20 replies already. Thanks for some great ideas. I'm sure I'll be trying a few to find the one that works best in our house. Currently I have the food dishes on old thick cotton placemats, but the crumbs cling to it and it's not just an easy shake (I'm looking for really easy here, can you tell?). I had to remove the water from the same spot because in their playing, they spilled the water bowl. It's now on the tile in the mudroom near the litter boxes. I don't like it there because it's less convenient to give them fresh water 2x a day, which I try to do. Anyway, it's great to know that the water splatters won't harm the wood floor if I don't get them wiped up. These are my first hardwoods, and I stress all the time while at the sink and loading the DW. My area rug doesn't extend to the far side of the DW, and inevitably some water drops on the far side. I'm tired of surveying my floor after each stint at my sink, etc. Guess I can relax a bit.

All of us alive now lived through unsafe practices, but that doesn't mean they are safe. Car seats, in particular, reduce the risk of death by 71% in infants under a year old. You can be the safest driver in the world and it won't matter if somebody else slams into your car and the force of physics throws your child out of your arms and into the windshield. Since the recommendation, based on studies has suggested putting babies to sleep on their back without blankets and bumpers, SIDS rates have dropped dramatically. I'm sure some of those moms in the 50s- 80s whose babies died from SIDS wish they could go back and do it the "modern" way, even if others around them laughed. Drop side cribs were outlawed after years of recalls and over 30 children dying because the side came detached at the base and suffocated or strangled infants. My oldest 2 daughters were in drop side cribs, when the recall and ban happened and the company sent me repair kits to switch the beds to fixed side. With my next two, yes, it was slightly more of a pain but I wouldn't go back to drop side. Even my mom realized the issue and she and I took a saw to her old drop side from the 90s that she had kept for keeping grandbabies and threw it in the trash so no one else would try to use it. She has given me a hard time about modern parenting safety until I reminded her that she was an early adopter of car seats, before they were required and I'm sure she got chastized by her family for it. I sure do wish they still had merry-go-rounds on the playground though!

O, I seem to be able to hold contradictory views simultaneously. On one hand, as a very nature-deprived urbanista, my heart always lifts at the sight of deer (and badger, hawks, fox etc.) but at the same time, I see the ravaged saplings and have dark thoughts of deer haunch in casseroles. I think most of us are really getting through our allotted time here, doing the best we can (although obviously, some people's 'best' will be other's mad dash for profit and exclusivity). Yep, there are too many people, but many models show a carrying capacity of up to 12 billion people...if we all agree to consume a whole lot less and live in a more egalitarian and sustainable way. Big if, for sure, and I don't think we will agree willingly, but there are many feedback mechanisms which tend towards equilibrium, with or without human consent. I never did any animal feeding (just water when needed) until I fell under the spell of garden robins...and now have a monthly tax of live mealworms. Even so, I have to ensure the little birds do not become dependent on my uncertain care, so ensure there are days when the feeder is empty.

Oh, okay. Um, you should be able to do that just fine. Of course you'll need to find one that will get your child to the right heighth to work with your chairs and table. It may get messy, but it's messy no matter how you do it with young kids. I would think that if you can get away with not buying a height chair, go for it. They're really hard to store. We're trying to make room in the shed for ours or find the darn book to show you how to fold it. It's been in the spare room for a couple months and I'm in spring cleaning mode :-) Good luck!

I know the one you're talking about. I have a regular high chair and the 4 in 1. The 4 in 1 has a tray, so it's convenient for both home and travel since they fold up easily. My 14 month old has been in both since she was 10 months old, so it should not be a problem with your 12 month old. Just make sure that you strap it tight to the chair it's on so that your little one won't fall off.
