Matching Paint Shades or Intensity???
Comments (6)Here I am asking about the locator number and the meaning of the C4 or C5 That tells the paint store people where the chip belongs in the in-store display. What you're looking for is a breakdown of the psychophysical dimensions of color. In other words, hue/value/chroma. Value tells you about a color's lightness to darkness value - or shade. Chroma tells you how colorful a color is compared to a neutral gray - or intensity. You're looking to create a color strategy for your house that aligns value and chromaticity room to room. Totally doable if you have the colorimetric data or hue/value/chroma color notations for the colors you're working with. Unfortunately, paint brands do not provide this information. Dunn-Edwards' Perfect Palette is the only one I'm aware of. California Paints uses the Perfect Palette too, they lease rights from Dunn-Edwards. The best you can do is go to an art store and buy a grayscale. You'll have to eyeball it. Compare your colors to the grayscale and let that guide you to choosing paint colors with similar value and chromaticity. Hopefully, this image will help you visualize what you're looking for. Additionally, the position a color chip holds on a strip of colors doesn't indicate anything about its psychological dimension a.k.a. its hue, value or chroma. It's quite common to find strips of paint colors comprised of colors from different hue families - just because all the color are on one strip and ended up in a certain order of lightness or colorfulness means nothing....See Morebest brand for paint color matching?
Comments (1)They all use the same science. Software and hardware is essentially the same too, just from different suppliers. Color matching by the numbers (the science) isn't hard. Anyone can do it. You can buy a Spectro 1 hand-held spectrophotometer and do it yourself. If you're measuring a somewhat glossy ceramic tile, you'd want to use a Spectro 1 Pro because it measures with sphere geometry and specularity included - which is what you need to measure color with a gloss finish. Where it gets tricky is just because every paint counter has the same tools *essentially*, a lot depends on the colorist doing the match. It's okay to go in to a store and ask who's really good at color matching because you have a project for them. It's also where hiring a color consultant can pay off because they oftentimes know where the best colorists work....See MoreSite to aid in matching the paint color from another paint company
Comments (7)I would advise an awful lot of caution with that site. As in, avoid. Despite the name, they are not in fact matching paint colours. They are attempting to match digital swatches of paint colours, which is a very, very different thing. These are just comparisons between varying combinations of Red/Green/Blue light and don’t have any reliable, useable, direct relationship to paint. In terms of to which Hue Family does each paint colour actually belong? Kendall Charcoal = Yellow Hue Family Down Pipe = Blue-Green Hue Family. If you want to compare and contrast actual paint colours, which have had their attributes of Hue Family / Value / Chroma / LRV or Lightness / Chroma / Hue Angle° / LRV measured with scientific instruments, then look to the free resources at The Color DNA Table at The Land of Color or EasyRGB.com #colouradvice...See MoreName brand paint match for Omega Cabinets Oyster color
