Grandmother Needs Gift Ideas

We have a one year old Granddaughter. I'd like to find something really special, something SHE'D really like.

It's been years since we browsed the baby toy aisles.

I've looked and looked, and can't see anything that grabs me.

She's just beginning to walk, and climb--she's a very, very busy (active) little girl.

Do any of you Mothers out there have any ideas for me?

We just bought our 10-month-old granddaughter a great new item. It is a peek-a-boo plastic "house" that holds balls made by Fisher Price. The box says 18 months so use your own judgement but I don't see anything in this that could hurt her. She loves getting in it to play with all the balls that came with it. It certainly gives her a break from her constant walking. She is all giggles when we play peek-a-boo with her thru the side plastic windows. It would help to have one of those electric items that can blow up airbeds.

Hi. I usually hang out in the craft forums but my SIL is expecting her 1st child in March so thought I'd peek in here and get in the baby mood. :)
Anyway Kathy I wrote this poem for someone else to give his grand daughter with a charm bracelet and thought you might be able to use it too:

A special grand daughter
charmed her way into my heart,
she is a gift from heaven
and I loved her from the start.
I wanted to buy a special gift
something she would truly treasure,
teddy bears and clothing
just werenÂt quite up to measure.
Something that would grow with her
and express my joy and pride
something I could add too
from birth to blushing bride.
So I give this bracelet
And a charm or two
And I will keep it growing
Just like my love for you.

I think gag gifts should be cheap and creative and generally something you "make" (or re-purpose). Do you sew? You could take an ordinary-looking flannel nightgown make it really racy... cut an opening in the back from the bottom to about halfway up (actually cut away some material so that the wearer's legs will be exposed, then edge it with lace and frill it up. Maybe add something like a fluffy bunny-tail at the top of the cut-out? :p Get a small box and fill it with "Do not disturb" signs! :) Edit: Just found this idea on E-How... Make a 'Rug Burn Prevention Kit'. They suggest using a child's plastic lunch box, but you could use anything suitable -- even an ordinary box. Label it "Rug Burn Prevention Kit" and fill it with things like knee pads, knuckle protectors, antibacterial ointment and bandages. Jen, how about that jar of messages your family made up for your grandparents. Wasn't that you? Can you elaborate? That was indeed me! Well, me and the rest of my extended family that is. I asked everyone to write down their favorite memories of time spent with my grandparents and typed up each one, printed them all out and cut the paper into strips that could be folded and placed in a large, lidded glass jar. I tried decorating the jar several different ways, but just couldn't get it to look quite right, so I opted to attach a wooden letter around the lid that's our surname's initial and left it at that. The jar came with instructions to my grandparents to draw out a memory or two each day, and enjoy reminiscing. I also compiled all of the memories into a notebook that they could keep long after the little scraps of paper were removed from the jar, read and tossed away. I visited my grandparents yesterday, and they told me (again) how much they enjoyed their memory jar throughout the year. :-)

Not knowing the couple, I'm short on ideas. I do have our invitation, decoupaged on wood and done by my mother. I haven't displayed it for years, but it's meaningful and I wouldn't get rid of it. I have my bouquet - dried not preserved so it doesn't look wonderful but I know what it is and that's what counts ;0) I can happily admit to having my brownie sash with all the badges too in a zippered little satin envelope in my lingerie chest. When I'm sorting, updating, I take it out and look at it, fold it carefully and put it back - with a pair of my childhood white Easter gloves that are about 2 1/2 inches long finger tip to wrist. I don't display a lot of personal things, it's not my decorating style but it doesn't mean they aren't important to me. Watchme, along with the brownie sash, there has been a cheaply made trophy here all our married lives, something presented to DH at a grade school hoop shoot tournament. And, all those years, I've heard from a friend of his that the trophy should have been his, of the two of them, he was the better player than DH. We're talking about maybe 4th grade, I barely remember 4th grade. When friend turned 50, I wrapped the trophy and gave it to him for his birthday present. He cried, and it's in their game room displayed now....these things matter to some ;0)
