preparing baby's room...questions

We don't have air conditioning in our house. (although we do have one small window unit we can use if needed). Our upstairs, consisting of two bedrooms and nothing else (not even a hallway), can get hot in summer.

In our bedroom we've been using a box fan in the window which provides just as much coolness in the afternoon & night as an air conditioner.

My question is, when the baby arrives, would it be better to a) have a window open at night in her room, b) shut the window and use a dehumidifier, c) shut the window and use a small fan, d) put the air conditioning unit in a window in her bedroom or ours, or e) any other possibilities to keep the room from being too hot?

I'm just trying to figure out the best method that won't cause her any breathing troubles...thanks in advance....

Maybe you could install a ceiling fan? I have a similar issue, we'd just rather not run the AC if possible. My DH installed one in an afternoon. He has some electrical knowledge (if that's what you call it:). There was nothing there to work with either, he did it all in the attic. I've also tried opening the window for mine, but we had issues with outdoor noise waking her up. Plus, she likes it dark, so it really didn't work for me. Good luck to you :) Christy

Hi Christy, thanks. There is no overhead lighting there, and currently we cannot access the attic space at all. My husband has long intended to create an opening at the top of the stairway, to access the attic space, but we have not had a chance to start that big messy task yet (popcorn ceilings, house was built in 1862).

Most nights are quiet here, and very dark, so we could try the window at first....or maybe a very quiet fan to take the place of a ceiling fan. I also haven't ruled out co-sleeping in our room but we'd have to pick the best option for in there then too...

That's true, LindaC, you can have falling off the bone tender ribs if you cook them for a long time, even leaving the silverskin on. Dad didn't like it, though, claimed it got stuck in his teeth somehow, so I removed it and cooked ribs until they fell apart. He didn't like BBQ sauce on anything else except ribs. I don't want my ribs to be falling apart tender, I want them to have some substance, so I leave the silverskin on and I don't cook them as long. You can pull two rib bones apart, but the meat doesn't fall off them at all, you have to bite it off, if that makes sense. Since I'll eat them either way, I don't see the purpose in removing the silverskin when cooking for myself. If cooking for others, I might. Annie

I got up this morning and raked the lawn and cleaned all of that up.It was still covered with twigs and pine cones from the winter. Then I spread some mulch. I also talked with every neighbor that went by. I was getting a little crazy from all the talking! Tonight I washed and broke up lettuce for a salad, baked the shortcake for dessert, washed a cut up the brussels sprouts to be roasted, cooked some bacon for the salad and chopped up the bread for pineapple casserole. I hope all of this makes things less hectic tomorrow. I also got out the good dishes and silver and the serving dishes. Oh yes, and put the tablecloth on the table. Thank heavens the house is clean because i had book club here on Thursday. Now I am going to put as much as possible in the dishwasher, turn it on and go to bed. I am beat.

So sad. I feel she is looking down her nose at you as a stinky ex-smoker. You must be banned, you are the devil! I would just stay quiet on the matter. Ignorance is bliss and don't give her any more opportunity to talk down to you. A grandparents love and knowledge they pass down is more important than squabbling over bloody carpet. I feel for you really. My inlaws sound the same as your DIL's mum. They visibly used to crinkle their noses and sneer when my mum went outside for a cigarette, come back in change her top and wash her hands and teeth and then cuddle my first born. They even got to me a bit and I mentioned it to my mum who was very hurt understandably. Having four children now, I stick up for myself a lot. And just go quiet and change conversation when I see ' the face' starting to form. I agree with the poster who said, it's weird DIL's allergies only come on in your house when they have two Labradors one of the worst breeds of dog for shedding continuously, year round and they have a double coat so there is a lot of dander too. False objections There is a lot out there these days to hurt our children. Diesel particulates from being in a pushchair next to a road right in the line of the exhausts. Mobile phones and the masts, coal and nuclear power. Foods, poisons that leach into our water. Even fluoridation of water. At some point we all have to die. That's the only guarantee in this life. Life spent worrying and holding back is not really the way I'd like my one chance to go. This is a tense time so I'd lay low. Wait till baby is here and just get involved. After all, it's not like baby will be with you a lot of the time any dangers that are perceived are so low frequency. Sounds like this baby needs you in his or her life to inject a dose of reality and not 'bubble' or 'sugarcoat' things. i am a non smoker, have never smoked Hate it. But I think you are being made into a bit of a scapegoat hereHave just read your update above. How bloody sad. I wouldn't let this happen if I were you. Swallow your pride and make yourself part of that baby's life. Why should that woman get things all her way. Like you say, well planned. Perfectly executed. Set the seeds and walk away and you end up looking like the awkward one while she gets to coo over your grandson. Please, do not let this carry on. Call your son and meet somewhere and take things slowly but go from there. Your son needs you too.

Once Fall temps arrive, you can change the watering schedule and amounts from whatever you used in the summer to whatever you used in Spring. That means to water -say- about 1 gallon of water if the topmost 4" of the soil (not counting the mulch) is dry and your soil is not sandy (water more if your soil is sandy... but try to mix in some compost if you can). You can skip watering if rain is forecasted. Once the plant goes dormant and the leaves begin to dry out, I water either weekly or once every two weeks, depending on whether there was rain or no rain. And definitely stop watering if the soil freezes! Ha! ;o) To restart watering, play it by ear; see how dry or wet it is. Maybe when you see leaf-out in Spring of some shrubbery and the soil feels dry for lack of rain/ice/snow. Ice or snow accumulations that supply melting water in Spring make restarting waterings sometimes a moving target. Best to make notes in a wall calendar and pass it the note from the one year's calendar to the next year's calendar. Add more mulch and soil pH amendments then if needed.

Maybe a not so quiet fan would work. My DD didn't nap well for the first year. With an open window, it can be very peaceful around here. Until you have a sleeping baby - I then noticed every wakeable noise! I finally bought an alarm clock with nature sounds. That white noise fixed her napping problem immediately. We used white noise effectively too. So I think a fan would be all right. You want to keep the baby comfortable and avoid rashes. Our new GS has been fight eczema, and the pediatrician says to keep him cool to prevent breakouts. So DD is dressing him in shorts now. I think a nice window fan might do the trick, assuming it is cooler outdoors than indoors. Otherwise, a nice fan of some sort to blow gently over the baby's crib would be nice.

As far as noise goes, if you don't make special efforts to have total silence while the baby sleeps, you will find that you end up with a child who could have a brass band march through the bedroom playing "The Stars and Stripes Forever", and won't wake up :-D
Though, getting DD up for school when she was a little older was a little more problematic :-D

Thanks everyone! I was thinking "quiet" at first so we'd be able to hear her from the next room, but you're right, getting her used to SOME "white noise" would make her sleep better.

I wouldn't put the air conditioner in her room...to cool your room hers would get to cold, she wouldn't sleep well probably. Put the AC in yours and a fan in the doorway (that you can get through) in her room to "pull" the cool air into her room.

I wouldn't worry about hearing her...I don't think I've ever known a Mom who didn't hear their baby (unless they literally couldn't hear). It's a "mom" thing. You can even pick out their cry in a crowd.

I had to grin at this, I am a Deaf mom. Yes, that is true that I cannot hear my baby cry but I always get the feeling that I need to check on him whenever he is in his crib. I do have a flashing light baby monitor with lamps in several rooms but I still go and check on him just in case.

Another interesting fact is that I could tell the difference in his cries from feeling his chest and his expressions.
