OK pros - opinions on trim paints?

Hello all. You've been giving me great advice about my painting job comingup so far. I swear...the BM and SW rep and all the painter WANT to do oil on my trim, even though they say I CAN do latex if I want.

I talked w/my Ben Moore rep today. He says the Impervo only comes in High Gloss in oil (or satin which I'm not doing).

I couldn't find the high gloss on the BM web site but he says it's Impervo 133.

He said if I want a high end semi-gloss for my trim I should use Dulenamel 207 in oil or Aqua Glow in Latex.

He also said it doesn't matter whether the painters brush or spray the Impervo 133 or Dulenamel 207....he said it'll level out with brushing and I won't need to spray anyway.

Another BM rep said to use the bronzestone finish because it's tinted at the factory and will be better, in less coats. I was planning to us SW Turkish Coffee - which is not the same color, it's more chocolately.

Thanks for the advice.

Have any of you worked with any of these and do you think it levels and smooths out nicely? Or is the high gloss Impervo superior to the Dulenamel?

I don't work with alkyd paints. That's old school.

Alkyds have been replaced with 100% acrylic enamels and waterborne enamels.

I know your favorites are Muralo and Graham, which I can't get here. So if you had to choose a latex that goes on as smooth as oil what else would it be?

What is the secret behind not having tacky (sticky) doors that the painters say I will get if I use latex?

Just an update. Came home today and the painters had sanded down the columns and the window trim. Hadn't done anything to fix the crown trim around the columns. Unfortunately they'd also sanded down the 102 year old porch floor which I'm pretty sure had to have been painted with lead at some point. It was pretty lightly done in most places, but I know there had to be some lead dust kicked up since there were places that were taken back down to wood. Anyway I'm glad the owner of the company actually cared enough about the job to try and fix most of the trim. The backyard unfortunately was pretty trashed, open paint cans skimming over in the sun, sanders and rags everywhere; but by the time they left for the evening it looked pretty good. As it stands now I'm hesitantly optimistic that everything will turn out ok. Thanks everyone for all the input. It must be infuriating to be a painter who really takes pride in his/her work and have people who just paint fast and furious. As an aside to Casey I almost asked the owner about floetrol after seeing how badly dragged and slumped the window trim was... maybe I still should before they do the next coat..

It looks from the picture like you do not have any stops on the interior side of the head jamb. Not uncommon to see a gap there when that is the case. It should be foamed and then some type of trim added to the interior to cover the gap, or perhaps that head expander will be extended up and caulked. Ultimately it could be a good install or a bad one, it is really impossible to tell from one picture. Not a major red flag in and of itself though. The windows should be installed square (even reveals), properly secured, sealed/flashed against air and water infiltration, and have a clean and professional installed appearance when all is completed.

Debbie, thank you. I understand what you're saying. It falls on the shoulders of the person you purchase your cabinets from to show you samples and discuss with you. This may be part of the problem, I'm not feeling real trusting of the places around here. (I live in small town USA) I am sure my two prior experiences in my only two local kitchen shops may be coloring my potential future experience also. First place did not listen to what I clearly asked for in the design, putting me way out of my budget. Besides that, the guy gave me a bad feeling, I didn't trust him. Told hubby I wouldn't be back. Hubby mentioned cab guy to local hardware shop. The owner said, oh yeah, he's a shyster, stay away. Great. He carried 3 lines I would have considered. :/ Second shop, the main KD was retiring that day, handed me over to next in line I guess. Guy had the personality of a log. They actually discourage us little people doing business with them, as they have pretty much gone commercial. Strike two. Hopefully the third time IS a charm. I appreciate your offer to help, I really do. Because I know asking you guys here will get me truthful answers, as you have nothing to gain and a wealth of knowledge. That's worth a whole lot to me. :)

Hey I have an idea. See if you can get some C2 paint near you. They have a nice semi gloss latex paint. I would not recommend Aqua Glo. A self levelling paint that is not.

Your doors should not stick if they are installed and adjusted properly. Painted surfaces should really not touch each other. Even if they do the paint should not stick if it's fully cured and fully adhered to the primer.

Thanks Paintguy for the link...sigh...looks like a nice site. We just moved recently to the south and it's so frustrating that I cannot find the same ammenities I could in the North East. Alas, so C2 or Muralo stores.
Even little things like my inexpensive face lotion I order online now...
On an upside it's a much calmer pace of life, which is what hubby and I needed.

The dark colors are not available in most waterborne acrylic enamels. Ask the SW store if they can tint the Pro Classic to your desired color.

Of course, using Pro Classic is a learned technique. You'll learn to cuss if you do use it. *smile*

I moved from Virginia, to the N/S carolina boarder. I did call the harware store here that says they carry Muralo but he said it was a very limited selection and he had no idea what I was asking about. Seems he didn't know the product.

Yes, cussing...I have become quite the sailor mouth building this house! Normally takes this builder 6-8 months and we are in month 15! Subcontractor issues. Just picking paint colors is causing potty-mouth:) Good thing my hubby thinks it's adorable - hahaha....guess it's a funny sight to see and short, petite thing say words I don't usually use:)

Some clarity around some of the statements:

While acrylics have come a long way, many pros still consider BM's Satin Impervo (235) the gold standard for trim enamels. At $40/gallon, they wouldn't use it unless it delivers the type of performance they wanted. And while oils may be "old school", they still provide a finish that is far more durable than the best acrylics. Biggest drawback is yellowing over time, odor and clean up. Years ago BM introduced Waterborne Satin Impervo as an alternative, but 235 is still widely used. As for Regal AquaGlo, it is now called Regal SemiGloss and has been reformulated as an all acrylic that does indeed flow and level as well, if not better than, Satin Impervo. Their Impervo is a high gloss oil and seldom used as a trim paint.

The BM rep still called the Regal SemiGloss "AquaGlo".
The BM rep said Dulenamel goes on smoother...do you have different experience?

Is there ANY Sherwin Williams that comes close in comparing??? I'm using SW colors but will have BM mix it if there trium paint is superior latex.

I'm worried about the voc's frpm the oil. I won't be there when they paint....but I read it may give off a little fumes for years...don't know ifthat's true or not.

I just noticed SW Duration Home comes in a semi gloss too - so wouldn't that be a good choice for a trim paint???
