Have had a serious problem...so things have sort of ground to a halt.
When we started working on the house, the plan was to hire someone to build the porches, someone else to do the siding, and someone else to do the roof. I wanted to hire people who did those particular jobs as their main occupation. But, I listened to my best friend who wanted me to use her husband's best friend to do all of it. They couldn't sing his praises high enough. So, that is what I did.
At first, things went along okay. They built the porches but it was forever before they put up rafters on the sun porch. Meanwhile, it rained constantly. Seems like the only good weather we had was on the weekends and the guy doing the work, didn't work weekends.
My husband is gone from 2 to 3 weeks at a time and doing a lot of over time, making money for the house. When they finally put the rafters on the sunporch, I wasn't pleased at all. I thought it was too flat. My husband came home, and asked them to change the slope. They only had a 2" drop in
a 20' wide room. The slope of the rest of the house was so
steep, water coming off of it, would have gone underneath the sunporch roof eventually, we were sure.
The guy agreed to that. Agreed it would look better too.
He said he needed $8,000 to buy the metal for the roof. That was a lot more than I thought it should be...but we were in so far, and we needed to get it done. November 9th,
I gave him the money.
December 3rd, he came to me and said he couldn't get the metal until after the first of the year. That didn't sound right at all. There are several places in this area where you can buy the metal...and in this economy, I can't imagine anyone not anxious to sell something. He said he would go ahead and do the siding. He put a blue tarp on the house.
So, he did that. He dragged the job out for over a month. I had told my friend when he came up saying he couldn't get the metal until after the first of the year, that I smelled a rat and I thought he had spent the money. Oooooh, no. Bob wouldn't do that. He is a quality kind of guy.
Well, the gist of it is...he finally came to me about 3 weeks ago, and admitted he spent the money. He also didn't finish any of the jobs. Like, he was going to put in some attic stairs and he cut the hole for it...big enough you could throw a cow through it...never finished it. It was so cold in here that water froze in the living room. I had a lot of plants...had counted on having the sunporch finished to winter them over in...it didn't even have a roof...and even though I carried them in and out all winter. I lost most of them. I had like 15 varieties of hoyas and several dischidias.
My husband came home and fixed the slope of the sunporch. He put in the attic stairs and he decked over the front porch. Bob had just put strips, and when wind got under that, it would have peeled off the metal...like in a hurricane. When doing that, found he used such little nails....terrible. He also decked over the sunporch.
Bob had put in the windows so crooked in the sunporch...my husband had to straighten that up. He never finished the trim on the Hardie Plank or trim around a window that I asked him to put in the bathroom.
Just over all...really sorry work...not to mention stealing the $8,000 and over charging for everything. I had wanted standing seam, but he told me it would be about half again as much as what is called R panels. My friend's husband agreed. So, we were going to go with R panels.
Anyway...my friends say he will pay me back, and supposedly he is trying to borrow the money. We are getting ready to file felony theft against him, if we can...sue him for sure,
if we can't. He never even came back to get his tools...I guess he can't face us.
Meanwhile, we went with the guy we had originally planned to
do the roof...and will be getting standing seam, and it is going to be $4,000 less than what Bob was going to charge us for R panels. So, in the long run, we will have the roof we want. I doubt we will ever get any money back on the $8,000
though.
Will take pictures once we get the roof on. :(
