Is it a stage?

My 15 week DD has been chewing on everything she can get her tiny hands on for about a month now! She can't be getting teeth already, is this normal? Is it a stage? Usually doesn't bother me till just a bit ago when she got a handful of my hair and chomped down...

My DS will be 14 weeks tomorrow and he has been chewing on his hands for about 5 weeks. He chews/sucks on them all the time! In the last 1 1/2 weeks he has really started drooling a ton too. I don't know if it is teething or just a stage. Hopefully someone else can answer for us.

I would say it is a stage. DS is now almost 8 months. At the age of your little ones, he was doing the same thing, but he didn't get his 2 teeth until 6 1/2 months. It may be teething, but in my situation, he just loved his fist!

2 ton downstairs. Upstairs system is in the attic. I have talked to 6 contractors so far and they all agree on 2.5 ton. They did take measurements of the rooms, asked about the quality of the insulation. Some looked at the size of all the return air ducts, etc. I am curious about how accurate a manual J calculation is vs. the observation of the performance of the current system. When they asked how the house was insulated, I said average, kind of guessing. Wouldn't that influence the sizing a bit? Knowing that we have a 2.5 ton system now and it was working good for 10 years, would that be as good of a judge? Although all the contractors asked about the insulation and measured things, I think some of them did base their judgement by the performance of the current system. One said that I could try to go down to 2 ton which may be undersized a bit but would probably work pretty well, it might not be able to hold temperature on the hottest of days but probably would be OK. The contractors that have looked at the ductwork so far have said it was OK except returns are not enough. They calculated 850CFM capacity out of the needed 1000, I will be adding one return to get the additional sizing needed. The deal breaker for me is probably the lack of a 2.5 ton 2 stage unit. I checked the quote and it looks like they were going to give me a 3ton 2 stage unit, which would be close to right sized when running only 1 stage, and too much when running both compressors and high speed. I am a bit disappointed they did not point this out to me. I am leaning towards the single stage 2.5 ton unit from another contractor - he put the system in my old house and did a great job, he seems to do very high quality work. Only reason I was on the fence and didn't go with his suggestion was I wanted 2 stage and he suggested against it. He said it wasn't worth it. Sounds like he was right. The fact that it is 3K cheaper for single stage does not really hurt either. Does that sound like the way to go?

Don't listen to the installer pushing for a communicating thermostat. It's the easy answer for them and allows them to not think about how to install a system correctly. Will the communicating thermostat work correctly with the system from the get-go? Probably. Will the communicating thermostat work better than a properly configured 2-stage thermostat with humidity sensing? Possibly. Should a 2-stage capable thermostat with dehumidifier line be able to work with it properly from the get-go? Only if the installer knows what they're doing. I've been having the same problems as described here and I think I finally understand what's going on, at least for my system: Stage 1 increases the humidity because the coils don't get below the dew point (I haven't verified the compressor is actually running for Stage 1 which is a different problem). When humidity is high, the thermostat should be able to request dehumidification via a separate line and this should cause the air handler to run a dehumidifier if one is installed or otherwise to skip Stage 1 cooling and use Stage 2. Some thermostats may support skipping Stage 1 in high humidity without the dehumidification wire, but the Nest doesn't as far as I can tell. My installers have clearly been leaning on the communicating thermostats to do their job for them and at this point I know more about the interior and exterior units than they do because I'm actually willing to read a manual. I've had them claim that jumpers don't exist that I have pictures of. I've already tweaked my system and until I can run a wire for dehumidification, I'm running in Stage 2 only which dropped my RH from 75% to 65% in less than 8 hours.

Chicago climate is low use AC. I doubt you ever recoup the cost of a 2 speed AC in Chicago area. Most years the AC season amounts to 3 months of use. While it can get humid there it is often short lived. If I were you I would spend the money on a better heating system, get the plane jane AC unit. Lived there just over 20 years ago... I service the Katy, Texas area.

A two speed AC is more energy efficient, but only slightly. Most two speed air conditioners unload the compressor in 1st stage. Most manufacturer's it's around 70% of capacity of the machine. When 2nd stage calls, the compressor loads up to 100% of capacity. Back when these first came out they were all the rage here because there was nothing better. But time changes things and here the better option is Inverter. The compressor in these is fully able to ramp up and down. One such model has over 50 speeds. Some manufacturers models limit the number of speeds... many ways to do it depending on controls, what the goal is of the manufacturer. When it comes to Carrier brand the inverter realm of theirs gets into proprietary equipment controls and such. Many other manufactures are the same way. So if they stop making the controls... well that doesn't spell anything good for you if you own one. In terms of efficiency savings? an inverter AC can cut your light bill in half. I installed an inverter at my home in late 2019. It's not a Carrier brand. Is an inverter AC for everyone? No. It fully depends on what comfort means to you. There are risks as with anything else. One risk that effects everything is the new freon phase down. What happened to R22 Freon is now going to happen to R410a. By 2023 for California, other areas probably not much long after that.

Baby's can get teeth at anytime but my DD (4months) has been chewing on her hands and drooling ALOT for the last month or two. I don't feel any bumps on her gums either.

Yes, it's a stage and because it's unending, it's another sign that your little one is not yet ready for solid foods. It's my understanding that they are drooling a lot because the salive part is working, but they haven't yet figured out how to move the saliva from the front of their mouths to the back and then to swallow it (which is what they would also have to be able to do with solid foods). My little guy started the same thing at 3 months-- and didn't get any teeth until 9 months! Now when he drools, it means he is working on more teeth (seems like that happens in fits and starts, though, and the teeth take awhile!!).

You never know. My DD is one week shy of 4 months and she was chewing on any and everything and she now has two bottom front teeth poking up. So never say never;)

Teething is a stage, and yes, they are starting to teeth. Liam turned three months on Sunday and has been eating his fists and drooling like crazy for the last few weeks. The books I have read say that the teething process can begin months before teeth actually show up. It can take that long for them to develop and push through. I know personally with me it took a few years for my wisdom teeth to come in fully. Liam's gums definately hurt him sometimes because he gets very cranky and will refuse the pacifier but loves a cold wet washcloth to suck on. I'll probably go out and look for a soft teething ring soon.

Do they still make those teething pretzels?? I have not seen any and I wanted to get one. Has anybody seen any at the stores?

Teething actually starts way before any teeth pop through. I didn't know that until DS started chewing on everything and then MIL said he was getting his teeth or something. They didn't cut through yet but it was like some of them were working they're way slowly and it just felt better to chew on stuff.

BTW~from about that time up until a year or 18 months, everything will go in the mouth! It seems to last forever but it does end :-)

I don't know about teething pretzels-- but we love plain frozen bagels for teething!! We use a quarter bagel at a time right out of the freezer. Just have to watch as they thaw that kiddo doesn't break off too big a chunk (I worry about it being a choking hazard).
