I plan to paint kitchen cabinets with white FPE eco on my painted cabinets. The cabinets have white color oil-based paint on them from the previous owner. Any recommendations on primer? FPEeco is a modified oil paint which is water thinnable (I don't really know what all that means...lol... extra info) I plan to clean, sand, wipe, prime then add a coat of paint. Should I do a second coat of paint? Some recommend just one coat with oil based paints. I'm worried that primer and 2 coats of paint on previously-painted cabinets will add so much added dimension that the doors will not close without being remilled. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! I agree with paintguy. Acrylics increase their adhesion with time. What scraps off after 2 hours may well be adhered after 2 days. As to Behr paints, I have personally made test samples of Behr Ultra, Marquee and WB Alkyd over sections of hard, slick, high gloss oil paint. I hand these to customers and defy them to scratch it off with their fingernails. They are wearing thin with literally hundreds of tries, but they are still intact! Wanting to see the worst case scenario, I did not sand or de-gloss the oil paint. I am an old school painter, raised on oil pains and somewhat of a doubting Thomas. I have become a believer. If someone's paint is "balling up", I would wonder what is on that surface? Was it cleaned of oils from hands or other pollutants?

I have no experience with this, but I wouldn't paint my counters. They just get too much use, constant wiping, etc and I don't think a paint would hold up well for long. When I read your post, I pictured some horrendous color counters, but seeing them, they appear to be white/ivory, which is a nice neutral. To get them professionally painted to me, doesn't seem cost effective, you can get in stock preformed laminates that are not expensive which would be new and durable and probably not cost much more than having them painted.

And it's likely in violation of a pile of regulations to sand lead paint inside a residence without using proper containment, complete cleaning afterwards, followed by lead dust wipe samples to confirm clean conditions. This falls under the lead paint repair and renovation regulations.
