Newborn diapering dilema! Am I overdoing it?

Hi moms! I have a question regarding diapering. My daughter is now 15 days old. I feel like we change her diaper ALL THE TIME! I have heard that newborns go through 10 diapers or so a day. Well, it feels more like 20 in our house. Sometimes, we change her, and then immediately hear another "explosion". Now, we are taking to waiting at least ten minutes before changing again, or we could go through 6 diapers in a half an hour. Usually, her active times are right after a feeding. Also, I usually change her diaper right before a feeding, and often I will notice that she has gone right before I am about to start nursing her. Then, I wait until we are done before I change her. Is that bad? Is it bad to keep her in a dirty diaper?

This is all new to me!

yep - sounds like newborn diapering to me! (Now does anyone wonder why I use cloth? HA!)

No, you're not overdoing it....especially if she poops often. But if she's not fussing about a messy diaper and will tolerate it until she's done with nursing, she should be okay.
You might want to wait a bit on the wet ones, but keep a close watch on her skin, to make sure that she's not getting rash from staying in a wet diaper. (Newborn skin is especially susceptible to gel-burn, so you have to be careful.)

sounds like my dd and she is 12 wks.old just the other day she went through like 3 diapers in about 5 minutes.
my lactation consultant told me that when they nurse it moves their bowels so dd will poop or wet when she's nursing and when she comes off for a rest i'll usually change her right away. big mistake. i have done this more than once (you'd think i'd learn:) and she will either poop on the bed, poop on me, or poop in the nice clean diaper i put on her.
anyway, i think it's great that you change her right away. we always have and her ped. always comments about her nice clear butt:)

I cloth diapered my son who is now 5 1/2, here are my thoughts. A 484 prefold (with the dark blue stitching) in a wrap will swallow a newborn, they are just too big. Did you get some of the smaller infant size prefolds too? They have dark green stitching and are the same thing, just a smaller size. You can use them when the baby gets bigger too as a doubler for nighttime. Just fold one up into thirds and put it inside the bigger prefold. Bulky, yes, but very absorbent for overnight. For the tiny newborn phase I've heard that buying a couple 24-packs of cheapie cotton washcloths and using them inside a wrap cover is great. And you can use the washcloths as diaper wipes later or just throw them away if they are too stained. I've seen them at Walmart for I think $3 a pack. We loved Prorap brand velcro wraps. Didn't much care for Bummi or Bumkin wraps but we loved the Bumkin all-in-ones. Dappi pull on covers are very good, cheap and reliable but the velcro ones run very small and IMO aren't near as reliavble as Proraps. I also have to second the recommendation for an Aristocrat wool cover. Ds used to wake up soaked from his chest to his knees in anything but a Chinese prefold (with the aforementioned infant prefold inside arrangement) and an Ari. They require special care but are well worth it if you have a heavy wetter. Fuzzibunz didn't fit my son right. A friend of mine had the same issues. And another friend tried them but her baby ended up have an allergic reaction to the fleece, something to watch out for. IMO cloth diapers, no matter what covers you end up using, are going to be more comfortable for the baby in July than disposables. Washing diapers is easy. What I did: -Cold rinse cycle with nothing added -Warm wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent -Cold rinse cycle with nothing added Occasionally I would use vinegar in this rinse, followed by another rinse with plain water. Hi Starbaby, I use homeade wipes. There are ways to make them out of paper towels, but I use real washcloths. I bought about 2 dozen washcloths that I use as wipes and toss in with the dirty diapers to be washed together. There are all kinds of ways to make them, some people just use plain water. What I do is keep the washcloths in a shoebox sized plastic tub, fill it with a little water, squirt in some baby shampoo and a little baby oil, submerge the washcloths, drain the extra liquid, and set them out to use. When I do a wash or the tub becomes low I just prepare more washcloths. Very easy and economical! (Plus, I think the washcloths clean the baby's bottom a whole lot better than commercial wipes!) Paty

I'm pretty new to gardenweb and I was browsing through all of the various topics and stumbled upon this one. I got one of the cutest diaper bags from a lady on Ebay. She uses designer fabrics and they are quite fashionable. It doesn't give you too much room to overpack, but does have room for the essentials. I'm a BF mommy though, so I never had to make room for bottles. My first bag was from Land's End. It had a lot of room, but it was so flimsy that I would get so frustrated when I couldn't keep the thing open. It would always end up disorganized despite all of the neat pockets. I could never get the wipes back in the right pocket when one hand was on the baby while I fumbled with the flimsy bag with the other hand. I would also fight getting the changing pad back in the right spot. The reinforced totes are definitely my favorite. I just keep a gallon size ziploc for the wet stuff, so when it contains something ooky I can throw the item in the wash and the bag in the trash. If nothing else when searching for a good bag, make sure you can take things out and put them back one handed!! :) One of the best things I ever purchased was a ring sling. I didn't like it at first because it felt awkward and uncomfortable, but I finally learned I wasn't wearing it tight enough. Once I figured out that little trick, the baby bucket (aka infant car seat) stayed in the car. The sling was something I could fold and tuck neatly into the diaper bag. At first, I seriously thought I wasted money on my sling. I really hated it in the beginning, but I was determined to figure it out and once I did, it was great! No more straining to see over the carrier sitting on the grocery cart, no more aching back, and the best thing was I could use it handsfree!!! With a colicky little one - this thing was a lifesaver when nothing would do but to be in mommy's arms! Never mastered the discreet nursing thing that so many moms can do with the sling though. Maybe I can with the next one! I bought my sling from the website at the link below (FYI - no affiliation, just a happy customer). The lady that makes them has some really gorgeous ones as well as some nice affordable ones. I found her when I searched through thebabywearer.com website (which is also a really great source). You will definitely figure out pretty quickly what works and what doesn't (and then you will shake your head at all the wasted money on the stuff that didn't work)! Good luck! If you are breastfeeding, you will not need anything special for diaper disposal as a breastfed baby's diapers do not smell. DD uses a garbage can. I suggest that you will need a crib and a chest of drawers. A changing table is not a necessity. I used a water proof pad I would put under the baby on his bed to do a diaper change, and DD is doing the same, only she is using a disposable water proof pad for less laundry. She buys them at the drug store. It is easy to manage without the changing table. I suggest that you get lots of blankets, sheets, water proof mattress pads and newborn to 3 months onesies with feet and gowns so that you will not have to do laundry too often. You will be doing laundry enough! If you live where winters are cold, buy 6 or so baby undershirts. I like bumpers in a crib too. I like that large sponge pillow to lay the baby on for baths. They cost just a few dollars. Helps you manage their slippery bodies as you learn to bathe them. I do like those baby towels with the triangle of terrycloth at one corner to pull over their heads so you can wrap them warmly after their baths. Get some baby shampoo too and a mild bath soap. I like to make baby washcloths for baths from a little square of cotton flannel. If you have a friend or relative who sews, or you do yourself, ask for a few of them. Also buy a dozen cloth diapers to use as burp cloths. You will go through these quickly. Target sells printed cloth diapers that are cute in packages of all pinks or all blues. You could also ask your crafty friends to crochet or sew some edges on them. Get some Original Desetin for any bad diaper rashes that may develop. You want to get on a rash right away if it develops. You could also have another type of diaper rash cream to use if the rash is milder. Have some kind of wipes to take with you in your diaper bag as well as at home. Keep a receiving blanket in your diaper bag to use under the baby if you have to change him or her in a public place. Of course you want a nice stroller and a car seat. If you will be traveling, Graco's Snap and Go is great--it's a stroller and a car seat all in one. If you will breastfeed, an electric pump would be great. I never had one, but a friend gave DD hers, and it does a great job of offering the mother options. We love the Bumbo seat, which you can use with supervision once the baby can hold up its head well. DGS loves his. DD also valued her Bjorn baby carrier and would even use it around the house if she had lots to do and the baby was fussing for attention. Also great for getting around the big city with a new baby. Hope this helps. Warmest congratulations.

It's normal to grow into feeling secure with each other. And, newborns do have sensitive skin, and disposables will hold a lot of 'wetness.' It's normal to feel anxious about and to be very diligent about diaper changing, especially in the first couple months. It's probably good for mothers and babies anyway because it increases physical contact during the initial time when babies aren't yet fully interactive on their own too much. It helps you both to learn how to read each other's cues and things.

Their stomachs are small and so are all their GI organs. As newborns eating on demand, as they are wired from the start to do, they are probably pretty routinely excreting most of the time too. It's normal and natural.

They will grow, and you'll probably notice your baby becoming more interactive and communicative. Later on in the first year you'll know you've come a long way when the timing of the last change is completely forgotten (it's easier to lose track of that when the baby in question is doing more things). Make a note of the concern you have now and hide it away someplace you will come across it in about 10 months.

it doesn't sound like you're over doing it, but if you feel exceptionally unsure or anxious about your baby and it interferes with how you function then you should mention that to your doctor because it can be a symptom which should be managed and which deserves attention

Newborns have a small digestive tract. So --- wait around 10 minutes after a pee or poop because usually, more is on the way :-)

Ten minutes shouldn't give them a rash because at this age they are all formula- or breast-milk and the #1/#2 isn't as tough on the skin.

poop and pee together are the worst for diaper rash; next comes poop by itself, and last pee.

Your own eyes and ears will tell you whether you're safe letting her sit in it for a few minutes. if she starts to get red, go back to changing more often.

Trust the evidence of your own eyes--and remember that this is not a life-or-death, mentally-scarred-for-life issue (they all seem so important when you're in the middle of them; I remember that!). If it turns out you're wrong, there will be no serious harm done.

My little one went constantly...so don't feel bad. She still goes a lot but the doctor told me not to worry that her plumbing works great.

I finally went out and bought a few diaper covers to help with the leaks. The first 6 weeks of her life I was constantly changing her, especially at night. She would go through her clothes, sheets and blanket. Amazing.

I swear by the diaper covers for nighttime disasters.

I found that I needed to change my daughter both before & after a feeding. If you hear an explosion & change her right away & then need to a few minutes later then it's not likely she was done with her bm when you first changed her. Give her a few minutes to finish up. If you think her stools isn't looking like it should then I might discuss it with your pediatrician to make sure there isn't anything going on GI wise.
