Drugs found in drinking water

I hate tap water and drink mostly bottled water, but it's because I hate the taste of tap water....this may just be another reason to hate it!

You might be drinking tap water, even if you are buying bottled water. A lot of bottled water is regular municpal water. Bottled water is no safer than what comes from your tap. It could have the same or more of the pharmacuticals in it than what comes from your tap.

Also - most bottled water does not contain flouride - if you have kids - you might want them drinking flouridated water instead.

AquaFina (Pepsi) and Dasani (Coke) are muni waters. Most of the big jugs are muni water also.

I have heard on the news this morning about the findings - but this isn't new. They talked about this quite a while back. Although the amounts they are talking about are quite small - it is worrysome.

I have Well Water and a Water Purifing System in the Kitchen.

Love my Well Water. I get so upset when people visit and refuse to drink my Tap Water. People are actually surprised that I don't keep bottled water.

Other than the cost of electricity my water is free. Why would I pay for bottled water at those prices.

Dan There is a rich literature in the psych, marketing, communications and soc disciplines that explains the fact that information 'being available for years' has little relevance to information being understood, compelling and actionable. In addition, it is the responsibility of the federal government to incorporate valid limits on chemicals proven to be destructive to life and the environment, which you've already mentioned. If the EPA has the research and at one time set standards pertaining to Atrazine but then ignored them for the past several years, many people are going to ignore whatever information IS published that they have access to, "confident" that the government is carrying out its responsibilities. It doesn't matter what reports are published from one perspective. If the feds ignore the poisoning of America's water supply, there's no other agency with the legal authority to act against companies that are selling these products. The responsibility then falls to individuals, most of whom are unaware of the research and not part of a political entity that could have much influence even if they did know. If I recall correctly, American individuals or groups of individuals cannot sure agribusiness or anyone else for polluting the earth. The Superfund sites are still sitting there, polluting everything around them. There's no more action on them as far as I know. So, maybe the only thing that responsible people can do is keep publicizing the research and hope that the public eventually catches on and demands that Congress develop a backbone and do something.

I couldn't see what faucet you were referencing - it said it wasn't available or something (hopefully I just cut and pasted wrong...). But generally speaking, when you add a below-counter filter system, you simply unhook your water line, connect the filter system in its place, and hook the cold supply line back in on the other end of the filter. That will get you filtered water all the time (on the cold side, at least). If, like it sounded, you're adding a separate filtered faucet just for drinking water, you would do something very similar - add a tee valve between the wall plumbing and the cold water line to your normal faucet. The tee would branch to your filter system and your new filter faucet would connect to the other end of the filter, while un-filtered water would happily continue on through your standard faucet. Make sure the tee is a tee valve (can be shut off separately), because it makes replacing filter cartridges much, much easier! When they said you need a vented faucet not made for reverse osmosis, this is because you need some sort of air gap, and if you get a filter faucet with an air gap built in, you don't need a separate air gap cluttering your countertop. An RO faucet typically has three lines where a standard filter faucet only has two.

greasetrap- I empathize. Kids are more vulnerable to lead than adults are. As someone who spent most of his work career in environmental regulation, including lead in drinking water, I can be a titch paranoid, too. However, I don't think you need to replace all your old pipes immediately. You know your water lead levels are low and, even if you replaced all the pipes, there could still be measurable lead from the well water itself, so you might not be able to get it to zero even if you replaced all the plumbing. In addition, be aware that brass faucets, until quite recently, had lead in them, too When I had three daughters at home, I knew that my home had some copper piping with lead-containing solder, and I just made sure we ran the water from the tap if it had been sitting a while. I did progressively replace old pipes as I remodeled over the years, but I didn't obsess about removing them all at once. If you are still concerned, just make sure water for drinking or cooking is drawn after the tap has run a bit. And, even if the lead content was higher than yours tests, you still wouldn't need to worry about using this water for showering or bathing or washing hands or dishes. I took a look at what my local water district had to say about lead in the public water supply -- I know they pro-active about contaminants -- and their annual water quality report said that, if you have a house with older copper plumbing: "you may want to flush out any water that has been sitting for six hours or longer, prior to using for cooking or drinking. You can run the water for approximately 30 seconds in order to flush out the plumbing lines." In my prior life as a regulator, we found that children with elevated lead levels in their blood, particularly those under 6, often had most risk of exposure through other kinds of oral intake than water. Young kids have their fingers in their mouths a lot and also chew on things they shouldn't. They get the lead from old, lead-containing and deteriorating paint in their homes, either from lead dust getting on their hands or from eating paint chips or chewing/teething on window sills, and from playing in paint-contaminated dirt in the yard and then getting it in their mouths via their dirty hands. Other sources of elevated lead levels were from some traditional folk medicines that are popular among certain cultures, and from eating from lead-containing dishes (often the highly colored ones where the bright glazes had high lead content). If your home is well-maintained, you flush the plumbing as needed, and there aren't other risk factors, you shouldn't need to worry about your daughter having a lead problem.

Bottled water will have a huge impact on the environment - all those bottles, what a waste! I do like the convenience of bottled water on the go though. I admit to refilling the bottles with my own water several times. I run the empties through the dishwasher to clean them.

I have well water also - some people don't like the taste.

I have a double filter on my fridge. That seems to make it better tasting. Also, I think cold water just taste better anyway.

Whew - the last slide showed that my city tested negative.
It was interesting to see what grugs are in the water. For example, some areas showed anti depressants, some showed anti Anxiety, upstate NY showed caffiene.

I'll pay for the bottled water...hate the taste of tap. I know what you're saying about the bottled water being about the same, but it just tastes better to me. Our tap water is nasty! We drink alot of water, I don't buy the little bottles much because we go throught it way too fast, but we do fill our big bottles at the water stores. I know, I know...they aren't spring water or any different, but the taste is and that's what I'm after.

When I saw this on the news this morning, I wasn't surprised at all.

For years I worked for a mental health agency. The "official" way to dispose of unused or expired meds was to flush them down the toilet. The pharmacy even told us that this was the proper way to dispose of them, after I called numerous times asking them to pick up unused medications because I felt very uncomfortable flushing thousands of psychiatric pills down the toilet straight into the water supply. It really freaked me out that I could be drinking anti-psychotic and mood stabilizer meds in my water.

Well for those that would be offended when someone refuses to drink the tap water,remember this.

I am one of those ppl...NOT because I wouldnt want it,I actually "prefer" the taste of "fresh" water,but CANNOT have it.

I just went thru yet "another" 4+ months of lying on the couch,and running to the washroom up to 28+ times a day.

I had salmonella in 87 and e-coli in 92,and they have left my "gut" super sensitive to water....ALL tap water.

Turns out,that the main thing in tap water that affects me is the minerals.

I can't even drink it if its been boiled...

Bottled water,on the other hand,"may" come from a city tap,but it is processed,put thru rigorous systems,including osmosis and ultra violet lites....so the odds of there being actual medications in it are really pretty slim

The bottled water I drink,which is a common plain old water,not some fancy status symbol water,HAS fluoride AND sodium.

I admit to having flushed my prescription painkiller medications in the past. I've always been worried about someone stealing them out of the trash. I guess it would be better to put something nasty in the bottle with them to destroy them instead.

I keep bottled water on hand for trips and to use in case we have an emergency. We have public water to drink from the tap. I don't always trust it. I've had dirty water and blue water come out of the tap straight into my white tub. Yuck!

Our tap water also smells like rotten eggs sometimes.....they say it's prefectly normal and it's safe to drink. I don't trust them. I will pay 35 cents a gallon to have water with fresher taste and no smell.

This is nothing new. Every so often they come out with another scarey article on this. With newer technologies we are able to find more and more teeny tiny amounts of anything we look for in everything. Just because it's there does not make it a danger to us.

Every home should have a reverse osmosis system for drinking/cooking water. Got my first one 28years ago and never regretted it,-- when you consider what "bottled" water costs it is really worth it.

Years ago it was mentioned that one reason that kids are so big these days (not fat) is because of the hormones in the water source that has been excreted from women taking birth control pills.

I don't drink tap water straight from the tap because of the chlorine taste and in the summer the zebra mussel taste so I keep a jug of Brita filtered water in my fridge. I am more concerned with the lead in the pipes that bring the water into my house than anything. In my home I haven't had a sip of unfiltered tap water in over 20 years unless I swallow it when brushing my teeth.
