Have you discovered 'Dear Prudence'?

"Dear Prudence" is the advice column at Slate.com. I really enjoy it, and have been reading through the archives.

I have a lot of respect for Emily Yoffe (Prudence). I used to think I could dole out advice as well as some of the popular columnists of the day, but I could never do what Yoffe does. She handles some mighty difficult issues, and does so brilliantly. I rarely disagree with her.

Any other Prudence fans here?

Hi Susan,

This is the first I have heard of Prudence. I read Slate.com but mostly what comes across my news and twitter feed. I will take some time today to dig in a bit, poke around, check out what else is in there. Thanks for the heads up.

Did the Beatles have a song called "Dear Prudence"? Or is this "Hey, Prude" (like "Hey, Jude")? :-)

PS: I see we have the green linked words in our posts again. I've forgotten how to get rid of them.

It might sound dramatic, but you've really changed my life. Here in Michigan, gardening has normally been a 4-5 month long opportunity. Now, I can do so much more than pour over seed catalogs all winter and chafe at the bit through the early spring. Now I can play all year! And everyone around me thinks I'm some kind of gardening expert. I've been able to establish two very large native gardens, which are now registered Monarch Way Stations, and I've introduced kids in the special ed programs at our school to WS and gardening in general. Trudi, you've done so much for so many, and it's just going to keep spreading. I hope you are blessed this season as we all have been blessed by you. Martha

I've read all these posts and wondered if in addition to the bubbler, the type 1, 2, 3 might also be a factor in rooting. I wondered if anybody can look at the named varieties and the type they are and come up with any kind of hypothesesis like this: Type 1 root best/fastest using new woody stems from May-June. Type 2 root best/fastest using new woody stems from ____ to _____ and so on for Type 3. I had clipped some Clematis from a friend and out of 4 different kinds of Clematis, only one rooted. (I did a terrible job on them, but they were all treated the same.) My guess is that the one that did root was a different type than the other three. I just hope is wasn't SAC! Lime

Dan and Robert, Whatever shall we do? You singlehandedly led me beyond the limited palette of American gardening as I knew it. I suppose it would be accurate to say that the gardens of my past were very much "Burpee" gardens in that I had Wave petunias, geraniums, hybrid tomatoes...but Heronswood and the catalogs opened my eyes to horticultural riches never imagined. I am so grateful for the new relationship I have with my garden and the world of plants and plantsmen and women. My first visit to Heronswood was a birthday present, the best I've ever received, and I remember wandering through the hydrangeas in awe seeing that this was not the ordinary shrub I had thought, recoiling in shock at the size of the hairy gunnera leaves (easily imagining dinosaurs that must have known it), tucking down to find small treasures beneath the leaves of other plants on the paths, and the blue border. There is a tree near the front window of the house whose name I don't even recall, only the feeling that if I could live near it life would be better. If there is anything at all that I can do to help keep the garden intact, please let me know. And please come back to the nursery business after the non-compete clause term ends. Thank you again and again for what you have given to all of us with your travels, writing, lectures, and collecting. Random placement: I haven't had that problem, but I always make sure my curser is at the bottom of the page when I start to upload a photo. If you've clicked outside the message box, the curser sends the photo (or link) to the top of the message (or where ever the curser is in the message.)

Hi Susan,

I think the Beetles song was Hey, Prudence. At least that is how I have been enjoying it in my head all day.

Yes, the green lines within posts are back. I can not recall the steps involved to remove them but I am sure someone here at the KT will let us know. There sure are a lot of them.

Just checked and the name of the Beetles song is indeed, 'Dear Prudence'. Now we know.

Hi Susan,

I just spent some time reading Dear Prudence. She gets some interesting questions and from the several that I read, gives some very good advice. I was surprised that there are so many questions re: Stepfathers.

I have Slate bookmarked and I have read her column from time to time. I'll have to look at it more regularly.
