Have you discovered 'Dear Prudence'?

"Dear Prudence" is the advice column at Slate.com. I really enjoy it, and have been reading through the archives.

I have a lot of respect for Emily Yoffe (Prudence). I used to think I could dole out advice as well as some of the popular columnists of the day, but I could never do what Yoffe does. She handles some mighty difficult issues, and does so brilliantly. I rarely disagree with her.

Any other Prudence fans here?

Hi Susan,

This is the first I have heard of Prudence. I read Slate.com but mostly what comes across my news and twitter feed. I will take some time today to dig in a bit, poke around, check out what else is in there. Thanks for the heads up.

Did the Beatles have a song called "Dear Prudence"? Or is this "Hey, Prude" (like "Hey, Jude")? :-)

PS: I see we have the green linked words in our posts again. I've forgotten how to get rid of them.

Thank you for sharing. You are blessed to have such wonderful memories of your dad (& parents). I have no such loving memories. Most are awful. I did, and am, making them with my children and my grandson. I hope one day they will remember me by some simple activity or motion. As I type tears are flowing. I am happy for your memories. I am also new. I found a copy of Permaculture 2 at a used book store and I'm slowly reading it (lots of concepts to wrap my mind around). I got interested in energy-wise house design 20 yrs. ago so this is familiar. Also- just lost a tree in my yard and had to replace it for shade as summers here are very hot. Luckily I had an idea to plant something that will feed my family and pets so I am putting in a tiny fruit orchard along with taller trees to shade more of the roof and keep the house cooler. Once I get the bareroot trees in, I'll put in herbs, some veggies and strawberries as groundcover. My son keeps fancy rats which provide us with plenty of manure/bedding for the compost pile along with green waste from the kitchen. My goal for now is fewer ornamentals and more edibles from my garden, hopefully so I can spend less money on food (and get better quality). It's on a small lot in a suburb of Los Angeles so chickens, and livestock are out of the question; riding stables are close by for more manure though. I'm having a good time with this so far and I'm looking forward to learning more from others experiences.

It an absolutely no spray (of ANY kind) yard, period. The little one (Paddy) is 15 and in excellent health/shape. The larger (Lula) is going on 8 and also in great shape. Beau is also 15, mostly blind and received a clean bill of health last week from the vet. His precise words were, "he's obviously healthy and happy. Keep doing what you're doing!" I use only water where they have free run of the yard and on all the plants. They know what the tomatoes are and sniff and lick them to make sure they are what they think they are. Today, they began sniffing and licking the hips... I left the desert rats, rabbits, squirrels, etc. behind with the move. I never expected the critters would fill the positions!

Aw, thank you, Jay. Now, if you like words and are in the mood for reading, can I recommend the most excellent Ken Thompson. Prolific, erudite, witty, a bit iconoclastic with some interesting views on ecology, biodiversity, adaptation. 'Do We Need Pandas' and 'Where Do Camels Belong' , the terrific 'The Sceptical Gardener' and, in his academic role, an ebook, 'Ecology of Seeds'- all very accessible., He has written many papers (a whole series of articles in The Telegraph (Torygraph, smirk), does sporadic newspaper columns, has some involvement in stuff like Future Ecologists- I think you will enjoy his work.

Hi Susan,

I think the Beetles song was Hey, Prudence. At least that is how I have been enjoying it in my head all day.

Yes, the green lines within posts are back. I can not recall the steps involved to remove them but I am sure someone here at the KT will let us know. There sure are a lot of them.

Just checked and the name of the Beetles song is indeed, 'Dear Prudence'. Now we know.

Hi Susan,

I just spent some time reading Dear Prudence. She gets some interesting questions and from the several that I read, gives some very good advice. I was surprised that there are so many questions re: Stepfathers.
