Any 'Biggest Loser' fans here?

I don't always watch it but have caught some of the episodes this season, alhtough not the early ones when everyone first arrived at the ranch. What did you think of last night?

Well most of the show itself was rather useless - the quiz and the challenge. The weigh-in and vote off were very satisfying though. I hope the girls can keep it up for the next two weeks. I can't believe that Ali is still pulling those numbers.

I always watch it, you can get really caught up in what's happening. Hated to see Dan go last night, he's a good kid.

If you are leaving them in the ground and they do come back after winter they are probably not growing enough to flower because our summers are not long enough. Unlikely that that is the problem. They have done just fine for me in MI and our summer is shorter than yours. Posted by bonstance59 I live in pittsburgh, pa, and have had glads planted for about 4 years now. They never bloom, I only get the beautiful green spike leaves. What should I be doing? I don't did them up in the fall, I just cut them back. My guess, bonstance, would be insufficient light. They are sun lovers for those of us in the north. I've never bothered digging glads up -- I have neither the time nor the inclination -- and have had them successfully overwinter and multiple for over 15yrs now. Didn't buy any special variety -- these were just the big box store cheapos. (Amusingly enough, the only glads I did NOT have successfully overwinter were some "winter HARDY" varieties I tried out 8 or 10 years ago.) Now one very big plus working in my favor is that heavy snow fall is the norm. But even after some weak winters they have come back. A heavy layer of mulch should do as much. Personally, for those in the north, I recommend leaving a few bulbs undisturbed throughout the year. You might be pleasantly surprised. And if they don't make it -- you've only lost a few. GO STEELERS!!!

How did I miss this post.... Winners: Red Haven Peach - Still my favorite peach so far Muscadine grapes (All of them) Blueberries (All of them) Violette de Bordeaux fig (Always delicious).. but it dies back to the ground each year.... Black mission fig (Always delicious) American plum (Magically delicious jelly) Yates apple Horse apple Loosers: Brambles - Bitter.... All of them (Black, Rasps, Boysens, etc..) 2013 is going to be their make or break year.... Sugar queen peach - Worthless rotten ball of bugs.... Dug it up. Esophaus Spitzenberg apple - Fireblight destroyed it. Still on the bubble: Rebecca's gold Pawpaw - 3 years old and 12" tall... It's going to go away next year if it doesn't kick into grow... Pakistan mulberry - This is going to be it's last year if they don't taste better.... Concord grapes - I think it's too hot. Don't get reliable ripening. Fuzzy kiwis - 3 years old and no flowers... Roadside dug up peach - Small, green, and very bitter/inedible fresh till it's fully 100% ripe... but bugs and rot don't bother it... Ripe flavor is getting better every year.... "Elberta" peach - I don't think it's actually an Elberta... No fruit this year. Methley Plum - Reliable, but I'm not real enamored on it's flavor... I classify this plum in the "A bird in the hand" category so to speak... Italian prune - Too hot in full sun. Transplanted to the shade and it seems to be recovering. 2013 is it's make it or break it year... LSU purple fig - tastes "Grassy" until LATE in the season, then it's barely on par with all the other marginal figs... I don't like it - except that the kids like eating fresh figs off the tree early - and this gives them some fruit.... Thanks

My standout new plant this year was by far Gallardia "Oranges and Lemons". It was the last plant blooming in late Nov after frosts and made tireless stands of beautiful, bright flowers all summer long. I just deadheaded whenever I walked by, and this plant took care of itself. I sure hope it comes back this spring. If not, I will buy another one as an annual, it was THAT GOOD. Agastache "Tutti Frutti" did very well, making a 3 ft small bush that was always beloved by hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. I would like to find a closer place to put one next year so I can better enjoy the creatures that love it so much. Perhaps as part of a container planting on the patio... Disappointments are Monarda "Jacob Cline" because it won't stand upright. It sprawls sideways, etc and is not the look I had hoped for. Nor did it bloom very well this year. Same story for my Gallardia Goblins in same bed, now they did bloom profusely, but not standing up. Instead they flopped all over the place and were a distraction to me. We'll see if they come back too. Not sure what to use in their places if they don't comeback or perform well enough. I need hot colors for a full sun, dry bed in front of house. Sections needing a 3 ft tall upright grower and sections for about a 2 ft tall upright grower. Suggestions ? Thanks in advance !

A great thread / discussion! I have several winners, the Bearss lime, Eustis Limequat, and Okitsu Wase Satsuma. All very heavy producers and are now ready to enjoy. I just harvested dozens this weekend. If i had to pick one, its the Okitsu. The Meyers are just yellowing up, so good as lemons, but have not developed the desired sweetness yet. The Lisbons, Owari, and Page are productive, but not ready to harvest either. And with a forecast low of 22F later this week, i am unsure if i will have any to enjoy at all this season. A surprise winner last year for me was the Moro.... wow. I have a positive opinion of the Nippon Orangequat is productive, a beautiful hedge and is great for unique cocktails. Another surprise is the Millsweet Limetta. My Loser: the Indio Mandarinquat. It has an unusual taste that has yet to find a use.

I was actually glad to see Dan go. I think he is arrogant and downright mean with some of the comments he makes. I would like to see Jay or Kelly win. I think they are the nicest people there and I would love to see them knock Mark and Roger down a peg or 2.

I'm sure I sound snarky. I don't mean to. I think that they have all accomplished a tremendous feat and I applaud them all for it. I just prefer the 2 nice people over the rest of the remaining players.

I tend to agree a bit with Meredith (naughtykitty). I was glad to see Dan go too. I think he started off nice, but he's turned very arrogant. Actually all 4 of the guys are arrogant at times. I would really like to see a woman win this time.

I love Jillian!!!! She's a bulldog when she trains them but she seems to genuinely care and shows her real feelings for these people at times.

I agree with Steph and Merideth. I was glad to see Dan go. He's done a great job, and lost a lot of weight, and is feeling good about himself. But, I think the guys just got over confident. I don't know why Dan felt he needed to eat that junk food, and 'rub it in'. Also, he didn't pull his weight (it sounded like) because he didn't cook, do dishes, or laundry. Sounds like he felt he was above the household chores that needed to be done around there.
Ali is doing a great job. She's looking good.

most young guys are like that now... and with mom feeding him, letting his weight get high enough for the show?? he just doesn't have the discipline...it will be interesting to see his long term weight maintaince, say 2 years from now...

I fell asleep before the end and was surprised with the end but it was good to see. Dan turned into a little brat and giving the cakes calories to Kelly after accusing her of stealing it was especially childish. Glad to see the two gals still there. Ali looks fabulous . Hope thay are all able to maintain their healthy lifestyles...

Kelly is a whiner and always has been....but she's still there!
Both women worked really hard and deserved to be the top two. Bob is going to be really upset!! Glad Dan went, too.
Hope he does well in both him healthy living and in his career.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only KTer who enjoys watching Biggest Loser. It just seems to fascinate me to watch the extent they'll go to rid themselves of a pound. (I do get a little tired of the commercials within the show...get enough of those in between segments.) I felt the same about Dan as some others have stated. He had absolutely NO empathy/sympathy for others that fell below the yellow line, but when it was his turn......... I still wish him well.

You mean you don't LOOOOOVE to hear about "5 calorie Wrigley's Extra sugar free gum" or "Orville Redinbacher 100 calorie microwave popcorn", or "Quaker Oats 100 calorie oatmeal"? ha ha ha ha

I just wish the product placements weren't so obviously scripted. They sure do POP out at you, eh?

I was under the weather last night and forgot it was on.I do usually watch it however and am also glad to hear Dan is gone.

I was so happy that the "girls" were the top two!
Too bad they didn't work together at the basketball arena and give the guys exactly the same number of calories... or Dan, Jay, and Roger the same calories (Mark has won challenges more than the other guys I think) ... it would have served them right... It would have been interesting to see how they picked the winner then! Hope the girls can keep it up!

I saw the last 20 minutes. I was sad to see Dan go.

I, too, love Jillian. I've been doing her Shred workouts and they are great!

Yes, All those guys are getting so arrogant, esp Dan! They've won by luck a few times, but they act like no one can touch them! Even when he fell below the yellow line, Dan had his plan all thought out about how his team would save him-HA I'm surprised he only lost a pound though?

Really proud of the women! Both big numbers! I'm surprised that neither thought to team up at the "arena" challenge. I guess I'm so competitive, I'm always thinking about that.

Yes those "commercials" are annoying!!
