Question for Bill V. about my marble

Hi Bill,

Part of my marble countertop is being installed on Wedneday. I asked them what kind of sealer they use and they said they use a sealer by Grand Quartz. Have you ever heard of this sealer? I'm wondering if I should tell them not to seal it at all, and then I'll seal it with one of the sealers I've seen recommended here on the forum.

I've heard of it before, but don't know much about it, good OR bad.

FYI, Bill, that sealer they used was useless. Water soaked into the marble from glasses, sponges, etc. I cleaned it off using mineral spirits and resealed with 511 Impregnator from Home Depot. Water is beading on the surface beautifully now. Spilled a speck of tomato sauce too, and it didn't stain.

Ahhh-got it! So Aqua Mix is good for pre grouting. Do I need to use another sealer for the stone after grouting or w/the Aqua Mix pre grout be sufficient?

Although no matter what the material, with 1x1's the grout will help against slipping, I tend to agree with you, that glass will be a little on the slippery side. The same with polished stone.

The porous plus will do the same thing, and you WANT it to. The 511 series of sealers is what's called "breathable". In other words, it allows moisture to transmit back and forth through the membrane, without allowing any particles to get lodged in the pores of the stone. So it doesn't matter how much sealer you put on-- it'll still darken when it gets wet. The thing is, if you use a sealer that DOES stop the water from transmitting back and forth, you stand a chance of trapping moisture inside the stone, and then it can cause mold to grow INSIDE the stone, and at that point, the best thing you can do is remove and replace it.

Bill, Another question about sealing marble, if you don't mind: What type of sealer do you recommend if you want enhancing properties? We recently had Crema Marfil put in our master bathroom (on the vanity) and our fabricator thought it would look better honed and I trusted that I'd like it. Unfortunately, I'm not crazy about the look as it too so much of the color out of it (it's such a "quiet" marble anyway that I feel like it robbed it of any beauty it had in the first place!). Also, where do you purchase these sealers? Do places like Lowes or Home Depot carry them? Many thanks!

I tried doing a search when you first posted. I'm not sure if it's the product I'm thinking of, but over the last couple of years sales reps will come in here posting about a sealer with a supposed lifetime warranty, which makes me very suspicious of it right off the bat, and I thought it was Gran Quartz, but I wasn't sure, which is why I didn't say anything, being that I couldn't find the threads I was thinking of. Thank you for coming back and letting me know.
