Teen Driving

Is there any way you track your teens driving. My 16 year old has began driving and I want to be able to keep an eye on her. I can not afford one of the devices that cost a monthly fee, but I want something for her to know I can check her out at any time. Any advice is needed!!!!!!

Have you gone on line to check? Our old insurance company had a program where they would have a camera installed in the car and it would record what was going on in the car. If you are in the US the insurance co. is named American Family. If you enroll in the program the cost of the camera and installation are free.

Guess I'm lucky--in our state you have to be 17 to get your license, and then you have a lot of restrictions for the first year.

Beyond that--just because a 16 or 17 year old has a license, DOESN'T mean they have free rein to take the family vehicle (at least it doesn't to me). Even though dd had her license we STILL drove her to work. Even when she went to college--until she was able to buy her own car--I dropped her off. Several reasons--no way am I giving up my car so a teen can go cruising around the countryside. While the law may say a 17 year old is old enough to drive--it ALSO says that a parent is financially responsible if that teen does any damage with the car. Lastly, and most importantly, just practicing for a month or 2 and passing the driver's test does NOT convey expert driver's status on anyone. I felt my dd needed more practice than that. Even though she had her license, it was a long time before she was allowed to take the car by herself--she often drove when one of us was in the car with her, but we didn't just hand over our keys.

It's your choice to do as you wish, but if your finances are tight, as you imply--you may want to sit down with your insurance agent and discuss just how much responsibility you have if your daughter causes damage, or one of her friends gets hurt while riding with her, or if one of her friends borrows your car (with or without her permission--it happens frequently). Just make sure what your responsibilities are as the parent of a driver who is still not a legal adult.

Yes, my G-kids love Guitar Hero and so do their parents~~what about that Wii game it looks really fun. Here they like skate boards and those scooters with motors. Girls love Coach and DB purses, makeup, clothing oh don't forget shoes. So that would mean gift cards. All from pricey stores. Music always music. Maybe concert tickets. iPhones???? These are just things I hear my g-kids talk about??

I pray for every child in that vehicle and every parent and sibling, classmate, and friend of these children. May each and every one of them recover from their injuries, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I also pray for your daughter who bravely went into hell all by herself to try to help other fellow human beings. May she recover mentally and emotionally, for what she did and what she saw will be with her forever. God Bless.

That brought back some bad memories of my highschool days. We lived on a farm 10 miles from town. My folks came home from the weekly shopping trip and Mom was very shaken. They had witnessed a deadly accident right before their faces. It involved highschool classmates of mine. Four of my classmates were barreling down the highway and my folks were waiting behind a car at the stop sign waiting to cross this highway when the first waiting car truned right onto the highway in front of my classmates. The driver decided to pass the offender, stepped on the gas, and entered the left lane only to meet head-on an oncoming auto. All 3 occupants of the oncoming car were killed. My 4 classmates were badly mangled and the driver barely survived. This happened in an instant in the intersection where my parents were waiting to cross the highway. That was in about 1953. Now it is 2014 and bad traffic decisions have not changed.

I'm glad everyone is okay. My son borrowed my car to go to his company Christmas party on Saturday. It was in Red Deer which is 2 hours north of Calgary (if you do the speed limit, that is.....). They hold it there because the company also has a warehouse in Edmonton and this way everyone drives the same distance and they only have one party. Anyways, it snowed like crazy all day yesterday. Before my son left on Saturday, I told him to do the speed limit and stay in the slow lane and to let people pass him. We were expecting freezing rain but that didn't happen. He made it there safely and had a great time at the party. It was coming home that gave him grief. The vehicle ahead of him lost control. My son tried to veer out of the way of the out of control vehicle but they ended up colliding. He said he did everything he could to not hit him, and to stay out of the ditch. Our car is a convertible and he was afraid if he hit the ditch it would flip. Everyone in both vehicles are okay, but our car isn't. I haven't seen it yet, it's at the tow yard in a small town about an hour north of Calgary. My husband is going to try to get up there either today or tomorrow to tow it home. Lucky for us, he's a tow truck driver we won't have a bill to pay for that tow. So now I have no car and my husband has to take time off work 3 days a weeks to get me to my physio therapy! Ugh! Near my home after the salt and sand it the roads: Red Deer is 2 hours --> in the picture. =o)

You could always keep track of the mileage. I wouldn't give her the car to go out with friends, only to run small errands.
