That is a nice sofa! We purchased a sofa, chair, and ottoman about 6 years ago and were very happy. Delivery went smooth. I do believe that the products in the JC Penney catalog are not available in the actual stores, so there is no way to see the items in person before buying. I was able to request free fabric swatches from them so I could at least see the colors up close. We still have the set and it has held up well.

We bought a sectional from them 8 years ago and just replaced it. It was junk. It was made by Bauhaus, a subsidiary of Lazy Boy. It took months for it to arrive, had to be exchanged because the cushions were falling apart after 1 month and then it happened again with the new replacement. It's just my husband and I! No way, never again.

We bought the Friday slipcovered sofa and chair a year ago and have been very pleased with the quality of the construction. (The slipcover is way too tight and the natural colour wasn't as light as the picture on the website, so I wasn't happy about that!) I would definitely buy another sofa from them; their new prices are great.

I bought some upholstered chairs from Penney's a while back. They were junk. DH was afraid to sit in them cause he thought they might break. I sent them right back.

It looks as if some have had good experiences and others haven't. I wonder if I call JCP if they will tell me who manufactures this sofa. I like the look of it but don't want to buy junk.

I can't speak for their furniture but I believe I saw in their new ad that they offer free shipping on everything, including furniture. I would call and speak with someone about the details and certainly give it a try if you like what you see and hear. Also ask about the return policy if you are dissatisfied with the quality.

I just read the small print and there is a charge if they have to deliver furniture further than 100 miles from one of their distribution centers. Wonder where those are?

I think they will reveal who makes the actual furniture pieces that you are considering. My purchase was 6 years ago, but I distinctly remember them telling me on the phone that my sofas were made by Klausman.

The only thing I have purchased is slipcovers. They have worked great on an existing couch. I do find the colors are off, not the bright screen sample, specifically the twill. Ballards would be another you should look at. I like their furniture options. They have the color you are after.

My personal take on furniture is the environment and use it is going in. Although I took the expensive route a few years ago which was a well known and recommended manufacturer. Rued the day it was bought. No kids, the couch and chairs just never held up. Think it is a trial buying any upholstered furniture.

I have head the Linden Street slipcovered sectional for 3 years. I have 3 small kids, and it has held up really well. They are 8, 6, and 2. I ordered an off white twill sofa before DS was born, little did I know he would have reflux, and puke all over it. But the slipcovers wash really well. There are virtually no stains, not bad for 3 young kids, who jump all over it.

It was backordered when I ordered it, and when it was supposed to be back in stock, I never received an email. When I called customer service they realized somehow my order was frozen in the system. Because of the inconvenience they waived the $150 shipping fee. I was happy with that!

I think that what Emagineer says may hold true for some furniture manufacturers, but not all. We are only 2 mature adults, no kids and a quiet environment. Our sectional was BARELY used before the cushions and upholstery started to go, not once but twice. As a matter of fact, the sofa part of the sectional was a sofa bed and after 2 years one of the brackets that held the bed in place (which we never used) broke off of the cheap wood frame. Before it broke, the bed made that area the most uncomfortable part of the sofa to sit on so we seldom ever sat there but once it broke, it made it impossible to use at all. I was so mad because at the time, buying a replacement was not in the cards for a few more years. I did some research only to find that yes, this was a "common" problem with this particular sofa.

It has been a common opinion here that the quality of products sold by JCP has been in decline for years, IMHO, the quality of their furniture was the first to go. When we were shopping for dining tables, my friend suggested we stop and look at one they were selling because the style was exactly what I was looking for. The veneers on the top of that thing were so thin I accidentally scratched the top while reaching for a sign they had sitting on it.

Now when I think of the furniture sold at JCP, I think of Pfitzer faucets or Pfaltzgraff dishes. The outsides offer the best/prettiest designs available and to suck you in, they're sold at a price that seems reasonable in comparison to other retailers or manufacturers but the quality of the products are some of the most inferior offered in their market.

My inlaws bought a leather sectional at JCP at a Black Friday sale about 5 years ago. It's their main couch and gets used daily by them as well as a stream of rambunctious grandsons. It has held up very well and still looks brand new. It was not expensive either - can't remember exactly but I know it was less than 2K. I don't know if it's real leather or that "bonded leather" stuff, but either way, it's wearing like iron and has turned out to be a great purchase for them.

lukkiirish - well that explains why I am so unhappy with our pfaltzgraf dishes! LOL They are all chipping!

Nutmegxo, mine too! Got the first chip with in the first week or two! They were an expensive gift given to us by my daughter and her husband and I only used them a couple of years. We just replaced them. :c(

JC Penny is like any other retailer--they have more expensive lines that are well-crafted and they have budget lines that aren't as well-made.

A lot depends on how the specific piece you are looking at is constructed. All hardwood or lots of softer woods? How are the pieces of the frame joined together, glue or doweling? Eight-way hand-tied springs or those sinuous steel springs? What's the upholstery fabric, thin cotton/poly or high-end microfiber or 100% wool or linen? Even Ikea has lower and higher priced lines of furniture.

I wouldn't buy a piece of upholstered furniture without being able to find out what's inside it and how those pieces have been put together. There's a place for the lower-end furniture--as an occasional chair that's used only when there's company, in a guest room, etc.

But if you are looking for something for your family room, that will be used daily and get a lot of use and possibly abuse from small kids or pets, I'd use that picture as inspiration.

To me, it would be worth calling around and finding a store that has that sectional on the floor and driving there, even if it took 3 or 4 hours. I'd want to sit on it to make sure it was comfortable to me. I'd want to shake the arms to see how sturdily they were attached. I'd want to feel the fabric to make sure it wasn't scratchy or wrinkled easily. And I'd want all the information on what's inside it and how it's made.

And if I ended up not liking the sectional at JC Penny, I'd take that picture to every local furniture store around and ask them what they had in a similar style.

Granted, I'm very fussy about the upholstered pieces I buy. A table or desk from a catalog? No problem. Something I'm going to flop down on coming home from a hard day's work? That I want to test-sit and make sure it is comfortable and sturdy.
