My tiny garden of tomatoes

Some one asked me where do I grow my tomatoes.

I have a very small suburban garden. Also, I would not be a good neighbor if I have a forest of stakes and cages.

I came up with a system which allow me to grow very tall plants with an invisible support system.

Together with a few other unique methods, I have a very productive garden for its size.

Wow!! Talk about a forest of tomatoes!! You must have the fertilizer down to a science too!!

I'm in Ca where we're in year 3 of a drought, but I have a deep well, so I can carefully water as needed. We were gone the last week of May and the first week of June, so though I showed my daughter how to do the watering, it might not have been done properly, but there was plenty of time to catch up when we got back! Our tomatoes are usually 5-6' tall and produce tons! This year they are barely 3' tall! Our purple cherokes were close to a pound each last year and this year are the size of golf balls! I got 2 peppers out of 12 plants (that could be the fault of the soil in the huge raised up beds we bought) Eh! I won't go through it all....everything was OK, but not so great! I'm going to really work on my soil this year. I have moved some of the compost bins right on top of the beds that will be vacant this winter, and I'm going to finally meet the lady that raises rabbits! Nancy

Thanks Karen, Our weather has been so bizzare here in MA. Cold weather, warm weather, hot weather, never stays the same. My plants look like they are the local jungle, have been ripening at a steady rate but I have to pick them half ripe or the chipmmunks take them first. These are pics of "my jungle", before the strong winds started blowing down some of the tallest vines and breaking them. Hubby had to cut them down for me and I took the green tomatoes in the house to ripen, I hope. The tallest vines where 18 inches and are growing in pots that have nothing but miracle grow potting mix. The pots hold 1 1/4 quarts of potting mix, have bark mulch on the top and a marigold in each to keep the bugs away. guess I should have stuck one in the pot with the tiny tim. Julia, I have outgrown my 50 foot long by 40 foot wide screen-greenhouse and now need to make raised beds outdoors. As you get better at growing veggies in Florida you keep adding more and more area. You win some, you lose some, you try different things, you get all kinds of help from the people here and your growing skills get better and better. Believe me, we all have failures that we don't show the pictures. Growing the same plants can be so different even the next year because the weather was different or your dirt mix was different because you couldn't remember what you mixed up as soil last year for that plant or what size pot did you use last year. I never kept notes because I had a photographic memory but now as I grow older my brain is running out of film :We learn by our failures and we eat our delicious successes. Lou

I looked around on your blog a bit, but I couldn't find what you're using for a planting medium. I see that you are trying to grow organically, but that is very different in a container from in the ground. What are they planted in?

I like the set-up! Looks like a sturdy and space-efficient system.

(The reason I had asked about where you grow them is because I was picturing an urban, not suburban, garden based on where I thought you lived.)

OMG. for years, I've been using the Florida weave method to tie my tomato plants and I thought it was the best. I am defnitely going to use your method next year. Thank you!!!!!!

The support structure is 33Â long and 10Â tall.

It is completely removable and reusable, and has gone thru a few years of wind storms.

Florida weave cannot be used for indeterminate plants, also, my system is designed to give better ventilation and better spray coverage. I have had less disease issues.
